    What is the difference between a slash chord and a chord inversion?
    Quite simple!
    - A chord inversion is when the lowest note or the bass note, is not the fundamental of your chord, but another note of your chord
    - A slash chord is a chord that has any other note than the fundamental as the lowest note. It can be any note, even a note outside your chord that is added.
    - It means that all chord inversions are slash chords, but not all slash chords are inversions.
    In this video, I am talking about the differences between both, showing some examples of inversions and slash chords and giving you some shapes and ideas on how to create your own inversions or slash chords.
    Hope that's helpful!

    Excellent advice. Especially when it comes to choosing a name for a chord whether you want to name it a slash chord or some fancy extended chord. Like you basically said the context is what should determine that.

    Nice job Antoine. I'm working on some Bossa Nova tunes and the slash/inversions seem to be common. Another great tutorial.

      @AntoineMichaudGuitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah! Especially the one I show at 4:14 is extremely common!

    • @grooveu1965
      @grooveu1965 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AntoineMichaudGuitar Yes, the patterns starting at 4:14 and going forward are very helpful. When I first listened to Bossa and Samba, and even ambient guitar I thought some songs were impossible to learn. With the use of these inversions and slash many of those very same songs are doable. Thanks again!

    At first I was confused until I realized that for your term fundamental was what most call the root. I never heard fundamental used for the common term Root.

    • @AntoineMichaudGuitar
      @AntoineMichaudGuitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 'root' means litteraly the first note (1) of a chord or a scale. The 'fundamental' position means that the chord is uninverted. At least that's how I learned it at University!
      PS: quoting Wikipedia: '' The root need not be the bass note, the lowest note of the chord: the concept of root is linked to that of the inversion of chords, which is derived from the notion of invertible counterpoint. In this concept, chords can be inverted while still retaining their root.''
      I believe that is why people thought there had to be a distinction between ''root'' and ''fundamental''.

    Wouldn't a chord, as in your example, that you notated as C/Bb actually be indicated as C7/Bb since the addition of the flatted 7th has now made it a dominant chord?

    • @AntoineMichaudGuitar
      @AntoineMichaudGuitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that very well could, and that's exactly why ''slash chords'' are so ambiguous. Because the same logic could apply if we wrote something like, let's say... Cadd13/A. We could argue that it's a chord inversion sitting on its added 13th, but honestly that's quite a stretch... because to me that chord sounds much more like an Am7 chord than it sounds like a C chord. So the question is: where is the line? I would agree to count 7th extended chords inverted on their 7th as chord inversions, but that is pretty much where I would draw the line. Great conversation! :-)

      Technically yes, but think about the notation as something which is supposed to be intuitive for someone who is learning the song. Which of those two would you prefer to read?
      1)
      D - D/F#
      G - G/B - D - D/C#
      Bm - Bm/A
      E/G# - Asus - A
      2)
      D - D/F#
      G - G/B - D - Dmaj7/C#
      Bm - Bm7/A
      E/G# - Asus - A
      I prefer example no. 1. even I think the second one could be misleading, as with example of the Bm7/A, you could play actual Bm7 with A underneath as opposed to playing regular Bm and the A in the bass making it the extended chord. So if you write the extensions all the time, you have no mechanism to notate the difference.
      P.S. bonus points for those who recognize the song 🙃

    Nice lesson. A quick question based on my limited knowldedge. A slash chord, eg C/D, imples 4 notes ( C-E-G and D in bass) but a 3-note chord can not be shown as a slash chord, correct? Btw, you have a beautiful clean tone. How do you get, if you don't mind sharing?

    • @AntoineMichaudGuitar
      @AntoineMichaudGuitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 3-note chord is automatically going to be an inversion, because if there are only 3 notes, it means that the bass note is necessarily one note of the chord and not an added note outside the chord. So in that case, C/E is both a chord inversion and a slash chord (if I understood your question).
      As far as my tone, my guitar is a Suhr Classic Antique Stratocaster, amps are Suhr Badger 30 and Vox AC15, and only pedal used is the Neunaber Immerse MkII (you can find my demo of it here: th-cam.com/video/4aHMBPIkpq0/w-d-xo.html)

    • @gorimus
      @gorimus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AntoineMichaudGuitar Thanks for your reply. So I think slash chords usually are inversions of some type as the slashed (bass) note can't be the root note (eg, C/D would bt the 3rd inversion of Cadd9).
      Thanks for rhe link; I'll check it out. That is an impressive setup and of course expensive! Btw, great to the point lessons. Best wishes 👍🏻
