- A playthrough of Konami's 1991 arcade beat 'em up, Vendetta.
Played through as Boomer on the machine's default difficulty setting.
Vendetta, the sequel to Konami's 1989 Crime Fighters ( • Crime Fighters (Arcade... ), is a belt-scrolling brawler that follows the same style as games like X-Men ( • X-Men (Arcade) Playthr... ), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ( • Video ), and Metamorphic Force ( • Metamorphic Force (Arc... ). It was followed up by Violent Storm ( • Violent Storm (Arcade)... ) in 1993.
Vendetta marks a substantial improvement over Crime Fighters. The controls are a lot smoother, the difficulty feels fairer, the graphics and sound have been upgraded, and there are four new characters to take control of.
You can choose between Blood, Hawk, Boomer, and Sledge, who are all residents of Dead End City, a place that has been plagued by violence and death for many years. (Yeah, it's pretty much Metro City). They also happen to be members of The Cobras, a gang who is hunting down members of the rival Dead End Gang after their friend Kate was kidnapped. The Dead End Gang plans to unite all of the criminals in the city under their command, and as the player, it's your job to save Kate and the city.
Like The Warriors. And Final Fight. And Double Dragon... you get the point, I'm sure.
The gameplay feels virtually identical to Konami's X-Men game, sans license. You have the punch and kick attacks, an over the shoulder throw, jump kicks, and the ability to stomp on an enemy once they're on the ground.
The biggest difference comes from the variety of weapons: shotguns, leather whips, bricks, and beer bottles are available, alongside the particularly effective street lamps, burning oil drums, and trash cans.
The graphics are excellent for a 1991 game - though the sprites are a bit on the small side, the level of detail on display here, from the glow of the flickering neon lights to the graffiti scrawled on the walls, is impressive. I especially got a kick out of the guys in spiky shoulder pads who scream in fear whenever they see black cats.
The soundtrack is also fantastic - it's comparable in quality to Crime Fighters' outstanding music, but I suppose that was to be expected with a fearsome talent like Michiru Yamane filling the role of composer.
It's a shame that the Crime Fighters line of games never left arcades - they would've been great on the SNES or Genesis! - but any fan of the genre really owes it to themselves to play this. It's a great game.

Vendetta was one of the best Konami games to never leave the arcade floor.
Indeed, played the crap out of this one in the arcade. Loved the shotgun.

Definitely a massive improvement over Crime Fighters in every area. So much fun to play.

I like imagine that the name is quite literal. You just walk around and see dead bodies everywhere.
Eh, there are towns like Buttzville, Nothing or Satan's Kingdom in the US, so this is not the worst name for a place I've heard thus far. Guess hate for some places really runs strong.
Konami sure made some good arcade games... I think Violent Storm was my favourite arcade title they made, but this one was also great (together with many others).

I like the little details, such as throwing baddies into the background, breaking mirrors. Got a kick out of the graffiti throughout: "slimeballs rule ok," "no go area for pigs," etc.
Bummer, I never came across this game when I was big Konami fan in the early 90's.
I'm sure you came across Konami's TMNT arcade games though.

If I knew it existed, this would have been my number one, we never really got the arcade cabinets here in the UK, we had plenty but missed out on a lot of what the US or Japanese market had

This was at the time where konami was trying to make a beat 'em up to compete with the likes of battle toads arcade and captain commando.. both still kinda popular (I think) and boy if it had a console release! It would've made a lot of money! But alas alack
Seriousl, but if Metamorphic Force couldn't do it for them, I don't know what else possibly could have. So underrated.
The first mistake the local government did was name the place Dead End City.
I played this on mame and mapped all characters controls to the same buttons so was playing as all 4. And kicking people om ground is hilarious

I sorta dig the design of the final boss, Faust; He looks badass.
I don't know if anyone else mentioned it in the comments, but in the japanese version, there are some creepy ass enemies that kinda look like Leatherman from Village People. They try to get near you and then dry-hump you, making sex noises all the while. For very obvious reasons, they don't appear in the international releases of this game.
Also in the japanese version, the dog (or dogs) at the beginning of the final stage, has a rather different behavior. Instead of attacking you, it... um... pretty much does the same thing as the Village People enemies.
😳 That's... Um... Yeah, I honestly don't even know how to respond to that.
The version we got in the arcades here in Italy had the leather guys and the pervy dogs, LOL!!! The funniest part is when you get hit and fall down the leather guys get down and dry hump you while you're on the ground unconscious... :-D
There was a 2D arcade beat em up almost exactly like Vigilante where the protagonist was a female and in the final stage the boss was in a similar sort of position except that it can last several seconds. People watching that would say it's in it's in. I can not remember the name but I wanted to find out whether it was a game feature or a bug

Whilst the game was known as Crime Fighters 2 in Japan, Vendetta was renamed for the western and North America release and marketed as a completely new title, which seems incredibly strange given the success of the first game and the obvious likeness to the predecessor. At first, looks this seems like just another generic scrolling beat 'em up trying to cash in on the like of Technos Japan's Double Dragon and Capcom's Final Fight, but there are actually a few interesting features worth mentioning. Firstly you can play with up to 4 players at once, something Konami brought over from their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Simpsons games. Secondly the 4 controllable characters Blood, Hawk, Boomer, and Sledge, are actually based on real life action heroes - namely Mr. T, Hulk Hogan, Jean Claude Van Damme, and Wesley Snipes.
I remember playing this, it is hard as balls. I always lose a lot of lives.

Kinda but you don't play as him. I suppose Hawk does sound like Hulk. Though funny how most of the mooks look like WWF or WCW Wrestlers.
I guess they took the safe road, knowing WWF had a pretty effective team of lawyers at the time. Honestly, the Hogan lookalike probably wouldn't have made it to consoles, Hulk most probably wouldn't have been cool with that, brother! 😂
Every city in 90's beat em ups has an ex-wrestler living there, lol!
My favorite beat em up from the arcade will always be Cadillacs and dinosaurs. In our country that game was so popular. Still wish Capcom would do something new with it
Instead of Cadillacs and Dinosaurs sequel, we get the Dino Crisis series.

I've always loved how many unique setpieces and fun details Konami puts in their beatemups. It really helps the player stay engaged all the way through. A shame they haven't rereleased many of their best ones.

It's all coming back to me now, amount of times playing this at the arcades the sound effects were awesome preferred it to Final Fight. In my top 5 beaten up platform.

I can see why this didn't got a console port. It looked more violent than your average beat 'em up. A "make Poison a guy" Nintendo would never greenlight it, and Konami didn't made Genesis games yet.

@@masterlee1988 Crime Fighters did get an Arcade Archives release in March (17th in Japan and the 18th worldwide).
Vendetta is now available on PS4 and Nintendo Switch as of July 21st which is today.

I've never heard of this one. I love beat'em up and this one really impressed me with some of the mechanics not present in most games of this genera
You are playing as Jean Claude van Damme from the street fighter movie and wrecked everyone and everything. I felt bad for the enemies lol it wasn’t even a fight. Just brutal. We need a kill counter bc the murder charges for this rampage would be legendary.

The only beat em up to feature a boss rush at the end. Gotta love it.
It's prequel Crime Fighters had a boss rush where you fight like all the bosses on the same screen for it's 1st loop.

30 seconds in and I was like "Oh, I don't remember getting to play as a girl in a lot of these old beat'em ups." And then by 40 seconds I was more like "Ohh, that tracks."

Konami's finest beat 'em up, and it's so wonderfully raw ^^ I dare to say it's better than Violent Storm cause it's really dirty. Played it with my buddies, we came to ask the question who actually are the bad guys after we stomped a couple of people to death :D

I just realized that konami was so lazy they kept the same punching and kicking sound effects from crime fighters in here. They went through the trouble of making a sequel yet left in the same sound effects.

I suppose it never got a home release because it was gang vs. gang. Konami was probably worried retailers wouldn't put it on the shelf.
Funny enough, this, it's prequel Crime Fighters and successor Violent Storm never came to consoles either, they were all arcade exclusives.

@@omegarugal9283 Boomer kicks people, Sledge knees them, and Hawk does a elbow drop. Even though you can be creative about it, they are all not as noticeable as Blood.
@@DamnitMan88 nop, i mean all character can perform a knee to the nuts, it happens randomly, grab the enemy and press the kick button
now that i think of it, blood doesnt punch anyone in the nuts... it performs some sort of ground n pound on downed opponents but thats it...

Holy shit this looks like a brutal game. Better version of final fight imo! Least likeable level would be the boss rush level. For the insane level of violence you would kind of guess every boss would be terminated at the end...

There's something that just strikes me as unfair shotgun blasting a bad guy already on the floor. I mean come on! Give the bad dudes a chance.

Better than Final Fight (1989). I wouldn’t say it’s better than Final Fight 2. That’s a personal favorite.
I remember this game. At least you could heal with food. "Crime FIghters" didn't have heal items if I remember right. I was a Boomer player too.
Only way you regained health in Crime Fighters was by beating each stage (in the 4 player variants, the life regain payout became bigger with each stage being passed)
