At the start, I thought he was going to break into the "Developers! Developers! Developers" routine!

Despite the crazy antics Steve's known for this was a really good talk, he's obviously more insightful than he makes himself look.

He is one of the top five natural speakers and leaders on my list. If you can not buy what is selling to you, then you need to check your heartbeat with your doctor. Follow your passion! And be humanistic!

From listening to him speak its quite clear to see the reason why Americans by far surpass British in terms of innovation/ entrepreneurship.
The one key thing that you don't find here is that element of passion in small-medium businesses, its as if everyone is afraid and too worried that they are working too hard or it could be a bigger phenomena such as fear of uncertainity like Peter Thiel said in Zero to One - Europe's vacation syndrome borne from uncertainty about the economic road ahead.
Interesting thing is Ballmer is / was just an employee and he is moderate compared to founders i.e Larry Ellison who breathes Oracle.
Our british founders barely reach Ballmer passion.
The only place in the city you find the crazed/passionate employees working their eyeballs out are in the banks and ironically, the most competitive banks are US ones.
Small but Fundamental long term impactful traits that Britain/Europe needs to think of especially when you look at where growth is coming from in industry - tech.

Fin Actually No, there are plenty of enthusiastic entrepreneurs in UK too. I suppose the biggest difference is economy of scale and braindrain. Few successful companies from europe has moved its headquarter to North America due to scale, and access to human capital. You want a foreigner with cutting edge skill? That one would probably prefer to work in NA than UK due to superior wage, foreigner friendly social environment and easier visa application.

They surpass the UK in innovation? Have you looked at scientific research over the past century? The UK has been a main player in most of the technologies we use today. Li-ion batteries, the Web, wireless technology, solar cells, nuclear power... Etc.

@@falcodarkzz UK might research stuff and write them in journals but we're too stupid or too shy or too jaded to put it to work into something that might improve our life
Just like in sports - UK invents all the games then sucks at them

    • @falcodarkzz

@@pierzing.glint1sh76 Perhaps look at the history of science and engineering, and present engineering, if you want to feel better. A huge proportion of nobel prizes in physics are in the UK. Going a long way back, we produced the first train, subway train, electric car, engine, electric generator, electric motor, along with the first cohesive theory of gravity and electromagnetism. The UK Applied the laws of physics to produce the technology you see today, electricity itself. Today the output from UK institutions and companies is still remarkable, just look at who won the recent nobel prize in physics.
