To me the question isn’t: Is Monty the right man for the job? No. The question is: Does he even WANT the job? Seriously. I respected him from afar prior to us hiring him. But he showed me NOTHING last season that tells me we should keep him. He literally looked like he didn’t want to be coaching, and this was ALL season, not just during the losing streak. How can we have a leader developing our young talent when it’s clear he regrets taking the job? He said when we hired him that the money was the main motivator in convincing him not to take the year off. Now it shows- he does not WANT the job. And either way, he looks clueless in developing young players. Remember that anonymous poll of nba players where Monty was ranked as one of the least desirable coaches to play for? Ya- I’ve seen enough of him. No interest in bringing him back.

I concur. I think almost all of us saw that Monty's heart just wasn't in it last season. Right from the jump it seemed like he had somewhat checked out. He said he wasn't going to argue fouls, before we even played the first game. Wha'?!? Huh? Here's a reply, in-part, to a comment I posted last year in November after losing over 2 dozen straight games:
"...I wanted to address Monty Williams's seemingly indifference when he's on the podium. Man that guy looks like he's just come from a spring walk in the park when he's up there. 15 straight losses and Not a Care in the world."
I believe everyone deserves a second chance. However, by giving a 2nd chance do we run the risk of repeating the same insane things again and possibly obliterate what's left of these young players confidence? Even more succinctly, will Trajan do a redo? We'll know soon, I hope. Peace 2 U

Not being able to score is pretty substantial in a sport where the goal is to score.
Detroit would make it hard on GS but Ben Wallace would be practically unplayable in the modern game. Detroit would be playing 4 on 5 with no spacing against an awesome defensive team
Honestly once you cross over to somewhere between 2012 and 2015 the modern teams just have too many advantages in terms of the skill, shooting and most importantly strategy.

Ku, yes a team can make a big jump in the East, but the Kings and Thunder both made huge jumps in the West. It is just a matter of player development and smart moves regardless of conference. Unfortunately, the Pistons have not developed players or made good moves. Hopefully that changes with the new leadership.
However, it would take a jump of 24 wins to even reach the play in. That would be a huge single season jump to make it just to 10. Talking top 6, 47 wins from a 14 win season is silly talk.

    • @michaelahurt

For what it's worth when they played functional lineups with actual NBA players they had a +8 net rating
If all they did was sign Gary Trent Jr and Tobias Harris and get competent coaching for 82 games and normal injury luck they could pretty easily win 35 games
47 would require Cade being All-NBA which I think is still another year away
      Functional lineups meaning:
      Cade
      Ivey/Ausar
      Ausar/Bogey/Knox/Fontecchio
      Fontecchio/Stewart/Knox
      Duren/Wiseman
Not Stewart at center or Ausar at PF or three small guards or playing two non-shooters next to Cade + Duren ... Just playing lineups that make sense.

Monty was playing NBA 2k irl and tanking for picks by playing 3-4 Centers in long stretches and playing Killian hayes 24minutes a night. To make matters worse, he made him go off-ball which might've went as planned because they lost 28 games straight. Cade got nobody to pass the ball to when he calls for a PnR. The saddest part about this was the players were actually trying to win despite the shit show every night. And that tanking got them the 5th pick....again.

Also GS also had 4 HOF'ers. Except they were all in their prime. And they beat the f**k out of a team with apex LeBron James and two other All-Stars.

@@cordelldemattei5446 But you framed them as having four HOFers and good role players which just wasn't the case. That 2004 team was a shell of the 2001 team.
But Shaq was still on the backside of his prime and Kobe -- technically it's his prime but I look at 2004- 2007 as a kind interregnum; like a mid-career crisis where the chip on Kobe's shoulder to prove himself sidetracked his entire team and he stopped playing winning basketball -- but certainly having two first team All-NBA guys and three titles vs no All-Stars swayed the betting lines and general public and media
But as I said, a lot of that was because we were very stupid as fans and the coverage was very stupid.
Haralabos Voulgaris was a professional gambler at the time who later worked for the Mavericks as an analyst and often appeared on Bill Simmons podcast. He said ALL the sharps were on Detroit and he made _millions_ off that series. It was easy money. I bring this up to point out that to the few people at the time using the kind of sophisticated analysis we all have access to now, it was obvious Detroit was better and that LA wasn't very good
LA shouldn't have been in the Finals. That was the year of Fisher's miracle shot and Sam Cassell tearing his hip.
That takes nothing away from the 04 team but they weren't great _because_ they beat up on a "great" LA team. LA was not the same team anymore.

I don't think Monty is the guy for the job. I think bringing him in showed enough that this team is not ready to be given the reigns to run a freestyle offense. This team needs someone who is an Xs and Os coach and who can instill some sense of involving plays. The coach needs to have a system, and all of those players need to fit the system.

Ku you are young pup in basketball that 2004 for Detroit team was the best defensive team in the history of the NBA. The hand checking rules allowed teams to play physical. No such thing during that GS run. Freedom of movement was instituted to make Curry and Durant the players they are today. Skilled but soft. So if the Detroit had to play by today's rule yeah GS would win but if you playing by 2004 rules Detroit would destroy that soft team. People act like Detroit didn't beat the a team with two of the most dominant players of a generation in Shaq and Kobe. Not top 15 players we are talking two top 6 players of all time. I always thought they should move in from Monty.
Most of the time, I ride with the East team in the finals but this year gotta go with Mavs. Cade's home team plus I'm a fan of Luka and Kyrie's game.
Always gon be imbiased and ride with the home team but i will add that a lot of people forget how deep that 04 team was. Most just look at the starting five. Our bench was no joke. The pit bulls (Lindsey Hunter and Mike James), Big Nasty, Okur. We were 9-10 men deep. Lost 3 key guys that off-season .
Had to resign Sheed so we lost Okur, who sign with Utah and became an all-star.
Couldn't afford to keep Mike James either. Had to let him walk too.
And Couldn't afford to keep Corliss Williams so they traded him.
If we brought back that same team we would've repeated for sure, if healthy.
Warriors bench would of got clamped up and ran out them gym.

You are the man Ku, but what you are saying about the 17 warriors is what EVERYYONE said about the Lakers in 04 against the pistons too....
The 04 team played with an incredible togetherness on both ends. But the underrated part was their attention to detail in execution obviously on defense but on offense too. They had a lot of talent but the brand of ball they played was still greater than the sum of their parts and their parts were great. Their depth was also severely underrated. I'm bias of course and I won't argue that GS is more talented..but the 04 team beat teams that were more talented them because of all the above. @@ronaldmcdonald1977 let's start with ...
      THE OFFENSE
Detroit ran an offense straight out of 2014. It was basically the old Harden offense with 3 shooters and just pick and roll. No movement mind you. Just PnR. Except Detroit ran it with their two worst shooters (Killian and Ausar) on the weakside so that defenses could easily bring a third guy into the action while forcing shots from Detroit's worst shooters
We didn't start running Spain PnR for 30 games.
We rarely used Ausar as a roller. Didn't use toss plays to get Ivey downhill. Rarely used Cade's gravity off ball. Rarely ran guard to guard actions. Didn't utilize Ausar and Ivey on designed slot cuts. Didn't coach Ausar and Ivey to stampede. And generally ran an extremely stagnant offense that exploited the weaknesses of the roster.
It wasn't until March that offense looked somewhat modern. Still bad, but they were at least running pre-actions to loosen the defense and weren't completely sabotaging themselves
And the offense just didn't make much sense given the personnel. It's like he was too lazy to actually create an offense. (Which he likely was considering he said at one point he didn't watch film of the players before training camp.)
We starting pushing the pace for like a week, playing up tempo, then stopped
      THE DEFENSE
The team generally looked lost all year with no urgency but the low point was when Monty decided to switch _everything_ for like three weeks. Teams could just call up the matchup they wanted and the team would willingly switch Ausar OFF their best player then make Isaiah Stewart to navigate screens. It was an absolute farce
      THE ROTATIONS
The all bench lineups were a disaster all year. It was already a weak injury depleted roster. Why would you exacerbate the situation?
It wasn't until like March that Monty realized he could stagger Ivey and Cade. Beyond that he often played lineups that were DOA. Stewart at the five. Ausar at PF. Obviously _starting_ Killian Hayes and Isaiah Livers. (Simultaneously at one point.) And generally too many lineups with bad shooting in an offense that only works if you have good shooting
The GM had to tell him to play Jaden Ivey. The GM had to tell him to play literally the only player on the roster who could get paint touches.
He flat out refused to play Cade, Ivey, Ausar and Duren with Bogdanovic.
      DEVELOPMENT
He did a terrible job at developing the players. Cade was the only one who saw any real growth and mainly I think he just shook off some rust. Ivey and Ausar were used as spot up shooters. Duren would try something for a few games then it would go away so idk what that was. There didn't seem to be any kind of plan to develop specific skills
That's just kind of the summary though because I've blocked out most of the specifics at this point.
It was probably the worst coaching job I've ever seen though. I completely agree when people say it felt like he was trying to get fired.
And considering his best years basically came with Chris Paul running his offense, I think it's safe to conclude Monty was never the brains of the operation and isn't the right guy to lead these guys.
      Just start over. Clean slate.
When a coach is this bad you don't need to give him a second chance

You made claims, but backed it with no stats.
      Ill give you stats.
You said Monty ran an Offense out of 2014.
The previous year, the Offense was ranked less. So I guess that Offense under Casey was out of 1995?
The Offense brought back the same crappy players, and didnt have Burk or Bojan for the first half of the season. And yet ranked high across the board than the previous year under Casey.
MICHAELAHURT-"No movement, just Pick N Roll"
Pistons ran Pick N Roll 21% of the time. So you are already inaccurate sir. You said no movement, just Pick N Roll. You are wrong. We ran the ball more that 24 teams Sir.
MICHAELAHURT-"Just PnR. Except Detroit ran it with their two worst shooters (Killian and Ausar)"
Pistons couldnt have ran the pick N roll with their worse shooters, Killian only started 31 games out of 82 which is 37% of games, less than half. Ausar started 38 games out of 82.
So your analysis is the Pistons ran ONLY Pick N ROll, and did so with players who didn't even start half of the year? That makes no sense Sir.
MICHAELAHURT-"We rarely used Ausar as a roller. Didn't use toss plays to get Ivey downhill. Rarely used Cade's gravity off ball. Rarely ran guard to guard actions. Didn't utilize Ausar and Ivey on designed slot cuts. Didn't coach Ausar and Ivey to stampede. And generally ran an extremely stagnant offense that exploited the weaknesses of the roster."
WHat evidence do you have that any team would? Ausar nor Ivey is offensive focal points for any NBA team. This isn't a video game. Thats not how basketball works, no1 is designing plays to get Dennis Rodman open sir. Neither did they for Ausar. Ausar handled the ball and did what he chose to do with it.
Ivey was indecisive. Were you watching the same game?
MICHAELAHURT-"It wasn't until March that offense looked somewhat modern. Still bad, but they were at least running pre-actions to loosen the defense and weren't completely sabotaging themselves"
You mean after the trade deadline and Monty likely got NBA players who could play and wasn't 18 years old and knew their assignments?
WHat evidence do you have that the players weren't missing any assignments and running Montys offense incorrectly?
You obviously think the team ran mostly Pick N Rolls, when the evidence and stats dont support that. So maybe you didn't watch the game correctly.
MICHAELAHURT-"And the offense just didn't make much sense given the personnel. It's like he was too lazy to actually create an offense. (Which he likely was considering he said at one point he didn't watch film of the players before training camp.)"
Or maybe the players sucked enough in practice that he ran what he could with a bunch of kids and no veterans. And players who just dont fit.
Casey didn't have them working either. Can you explain how 2 winning Coaches failed with the same crappy players? Monty had it worse. Cade was coming off an injury, and Bogie their best weapon was hurt the first half of the season and so was Burk. Those were their 2 primary Veterans,
MICHAELAHURT-"We starting pushing the pace for like a week, playing up tempo, then stopped"
LOL. Pistons were one of the runniest teams in the league last year bro. You are making stuff up sir. I am not reading anything else bro, your assessment isn't accurate.
Pistons were #9 last year in pushing the ball and playing up tempo, you must have missed all those dunks and fast breaks being nulled to sleep with that imaginary Pick N ROll by Killian and Ausar you saw in your nightmares.
"GM had to tell him to play Ivey."
And we proceeded to lose another 30 games. LOL. YOU did not make a good case at all. Ivey doesn't fit, every1 is saying it now. Monty saw it in practice, and changed his game plan to fit the media, fans, and Ownership.
We still lost. When Ivey started the whole year damn near they won 17 games LMAO. Come on SIr, give me some stats, not emotions.
Ivey and Cade isnt a good match until Ivey learns to shoot. Atlanta cant even win with that silly backcourt and they have veterans. You think Kids can run it? Its a weak back court, and doesn't complement Cades game.
Monty sees that. You fans see video game stats.
I cant read the other stuff as you were making unsubstantiated claims based on emotions and not factual data.
