    How exciting, I’m receiving Lady Gardner in spring!! Along with eleven others from DA, I went a little nuts. 🤦🏽‍♀️

    If I'm not mistaken, The Generous Gardener can do well in a bit of shade. I think having it climb up a tree would be beautiful, especially if it's a tree you pass by often since the fragrance is wonderful.

    I ordered bare roots of port’s wife and Bathsheba that coming in spring. Can’t wait!

    Enjoyed reading an article relative to rose fragrances which says the fragrance is strongest during the first blooming cycle.

    I did receive 3 own root from them the other day but I was disappointed with size of the rose. They looked like bands. You cannot beat Antique rose emporium for the size which was 3 times bigger & cheaper if only they have more choices. I would recommend ARE over them if the variety of DA is available.
    I also got a flower on the princess Alexandria but it doesn't look like the flower it was supposed to be colorwise & fragrance. I was thinking it was mislabeled☹️

      And the canes were over pencil size & looked like bare root for an own root. This is from antique rose emporium by the way.

    weird question, Kimberly! Does one have to request the David Austin catalogue every year or if i've received one last spring-- i'm on the list for the first run with a coupon?

    You know? You are the best. Truly a rose geek. I’ve been wondering if I should go with bare root or continue to get only the potted ones. I now have my answer. I don’t like drafted ones especially after your experience with Dr. Huey. I’m sticking to potted ones!

      @@TheRoseGeek Hey Kim, I’m an ardent follower of yours. I have limited space in my but looking to make most of it. I have a list of “must have” roses and the only space available for a bed is along the side of our yard. I know DA advises to use the same variety for hedges but the roses I want are of different shades of pink and a couple yellow ( Shallot and lark). They are also slightly diff in size (4.5 to 5.5). My plan is to plant them all in a row with 1 ft space in between. (I can’t afford the 2 ft recommended space). I know it’s not ideal but I simply can’t short list further Do you think this is a terrible idea? Do you envision it to look colorful or do you think it will be messy 2-3 years later? I value your opinion and counting on your timely response please( very tile time to finalize. Sorry)) 🌺🌈

    I received my orders of 16 David Austin roses (including the three you got! My The Poet’s Wife had a gorgeous bloom and it was so wonderful!) a couple weeks ago and it was so exciting! Almost all of them are planted now (I’m in 9a, south Texas), but I discovered grub worms near one of my raised beds 😩 so I’ve been treating the yard (naturally!) the past couple of days. I ordered a few others from J&P and found they had more leaves with black spot than the DA roses. This is my first time ever doing rose gardening, so I’ve been binge watching your videos and taking notes all summer when planning! Thank you for all the information you’ve shared! 💕

  • @Sindri27

    I love their potted roses. The blackspot doesn't bother me. It seems they usually have a little bit on them. Blooms are exciting!

    I bought 4 david austin roses from a local nursery last summer in the 3 gallon square pots and I was so impressed how well they did. (poets wife, 2 olivas, and 1 queen of sweden). Could you clarify about the difference in age between a bare root, 2 quarts and the larger pot size I purchased? Also, are there advantages to planting 2 quarts versus bare root?

      @@TheRoseGeek yes so much! I was lucky enough to get a Lady Emma Hamilton bare root rose on my order for spring, however I called today and they stated it’s a grafted rose only (no option from them to buy it own root). Is it possible I can get it own root from another company?

    Great info Kimberley, thank you so much!
    I didn't know DA's potted roses are all own-root. Great, if so, i can order more potted ones from them in April May when they are open for 2022 Fall shipment pre-orders. Have i got this right? or i have misunderstood something about their ordering schedule? 🙏🙏❤❤

    Yours look huge compared to mine! I bought two Bathshebas 2 quarts recently and they are SO tiny. I’m very disappointed, they look like 6 month old propagated roses. These are my first climbers and I feel like I won’t be able to enjoy them for five years.

      I thought the same when I received mine. They really took off and I was so surprised how quickly they grew. I hope that yours surprise you this year and that you have blooms.

      @@TheRoseGeek I so hope mine do! I'm an extremely impatient gardener. To make matters worse, one of them fell off my deck railing and snapped one of the big branches, so it's even got a tinier start to it's life. I'm hoping the fertilizer makes them really flourish and thank me. I plan on telling them how beautiful they are to speed the process along. 😁

    Are all DA potted roses on own root? And are all bareroot on other stock? I ordered bareroot last Spring because they are bigger and older, but wondering about the difference.

    There is a nurseryman in Hawaii that converts all of his Dr. Heuy grafted to own root by burying them deep, scoring some of the top stock, using hormone powder and covering it all with soil. He usually does this in fall.......It think it would make a really great experiment that you could document on youtube....With David Austin, it would not be much of a risk.

    • @Rmksmkdindjnenidisndj
      @Rmksmkdindjnenidisndj 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would she do that as propagating patented roses asexually or sexually is illegal? And document it on TH-cam? One should respect the plant patent laws for all the years and investments that went into producing such a great products.

    • @annebeck2208
      @annebeck2208 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRoseGeek No, he does not do youtube. I am trying this with Tropicana and Tiffany, but don't have pictures.

      @@Rmksmkdindjnenidisndj It is best to double check that your information is correct before publishing it. She knows that many, many of her roses were patented over 20 years ago, and free to propagate. But this is not propagating, but causing a grafted rose to use it's own roots and become better for her soil....you don't make a new plant! Dr. Heuy hates her wet soil.
