Now this is how you do a review, straight to it and no bs. Great comparison and I am leaning towards the slimmer half jackets. Excellent job man, thanks!
Great comparison of the two models. You do a great job of showing the differences and similarities! I am loving my Flak Jackets!! Keep up the great work man.
Great video, thank you very much. I am a pilot working in South America, had my pack stolen, lost my military issue Oakley, trying to re-order, so many new styles, your VIDEO rocks, explained the different frames, lens combo, looking at the Oakley web site did not really explain. Oakley should post a link to your Video, really. Oakley at their factory in Lake Forest California is the only place that can make a RX for these curved lens, so it is necessary to order them directly from Oakley, to get my RX into the lens. thank you again, !!
I just got my SI Flak Jackets. They almost exclusively use the Grey lens because it is the least reflective. I'm looking foward to using sunglasses in the field that don't break after three days.
Dude, great vid. Its amazing how the info that you have posted in this video is still very current even tho you posted it a couple of years ago. I've got a pair of Flak Jackets that I've had for a couple of years now with lenses that have seen better days and only just realised 2 weeks ago that the lenses can be brought seperately and that you can buy frame accessory kits for them!
I agree with you about the round legs on the Half Jacket. I really like them, but due to the thickness of the legs (especially near the temple) I get a headache every time I try and wear them with a helmet or aviation headset. I'm trying to figure out how much of an improvement the Flak Jacket would be...
@2015justin well it all depends on if you need something sporty and a bit bigger like the flak jackets. They are very comfortable and I would say a great upgrade for the fives.
@pshynerd the flak jackets are the only ones that come with the hydrophobic lenses. But oakley now sells the hydrophobic solution so you can add it to any lens
yeah the lack of scratch resistance is the only drawback worth noting i can find with oakleys. from what I've heard Rudy Project is more scratch resistant but their best quality lenses are the photochromic ones. I don't really have a need for photochromic so I'm going to stick with the oakleys for now. as for how well i take care of them, i basically just follow your care instructions from your cleaning video and that seems to be working so far. thanks for all of your videos, they're great!
Couldn't agree more. Standard half jackets with standard lenses for the sporty stuff, and the flack jackets with XLJ lenses for a more casual, all day pair of sunglasses. The flacks are more comfortable in the long run, but there is something to be said about the half jackets small tight profile. If you want an even smaller profile, go with the Asian fit.
@silvertone4291 yeah, a lot of people have trouble figuring that one out. If you have an Oakley store near you, you can always take them in and have them do it if you don't feel comfortable. That way if they somehow break it then they have to replace it lol
@silvertone4291 great question. the easiest thing to do is remove the leg, like i did to the half jackets in the video. In essence you grasp the leg as if you were going to break it from the frame and twist. the leg should pop out of the frame and then you slide the rubber piece off. match it up to one of the new ones and slide it in. It might no go in as smoothly so you might have to twist it as you slide. then you just place the leg on its side into the frame and twist it back into place.
there are times when they could creak. this is normal and should go away after a while but if you want you can always try and exchange them depending on where you bought them
iridium is an extra coating on the lens so by definition it would be more susceptible to scratching but it all depends on how well you take care of the lenses
Good video man. I am subscribing to you. Love me some Flak Jackets. However I have been through 3 pairs. 1 was stolen in Afghanistan, 1 was lost in my friends yard, somehow, and 1 was forgotten in a box truck bringing some guys back to Bragg after we picked them up at BWI. Maybe 4th times a charm, eh!
Great video. Pretty in depth. I do have a question though. Which would you recommend for fishing? I usually wear a baseball cap when fishing. I'm looking for one that's lightweight and comfortable. I fish often and for hours. Thanks in advance.
@GermanPotatoSoup i'm assuming it mean miles per hour but i'd have to see were you saw it at. i have not done a review of those styles because unfortunately i only own the XX. also since they are pretty much discontinued it would be difficult for people to find them.
@xxEdwardxx21 I too run sprints, the 200m and the 400m, and I wear my flak jackets when i race. they didnt move at all when i was running, so you dont have to worry about them falling off. also they are very comfortable and i didnt get any lightheaded feeling after the race.
@5679tk both are great pair but i guess it all depends on what you are going to be using them for. the straight jacket is more of a sporty frame but can also be used for everyday depending on the color. the oil rig is more of a lifestyle frame but not good for sporty situations.
@5679tk well the straight jacket is going to be more along the lines of the half and flak jackets in the sense that it's more of a sporty frame. I love the way the straight jackets fit. The oil rig is a nice fit too but it is definitely wider. if you need them for driving i would go with the straight jacket because the legs on the oil rig can sometimes block your perriferal.
@SunnyAZ92 yes, they are very similar in look and in fit except for the fact that the straight jacket has the rubber on the ear and the nose and the hydrophobic coating on the lens
@Copglock i think the flak jackets will serve you well as everyday sunglasses and also when you become a cop. i don't think you would need to but another pair
Thanks man! I was back at the Oakley store yesterday and an employee looked at it and said i have the one year warrantee on the frame and i can get them replaced but it didnt even seem like it would be worth the trouble. plus I played with it and I got it tighter
what color is the icon on the jet black/black iridium frames (not customized)? I can't tell if it is gunmetal or polished chrome. Thanks for the help,Great video.
Hey bro! Have you had the chance to try out the new SOLFX lenses yet? Thinking about buying the halfjackets with those lenses through SI. Would be nice to get a review on them from a tactical perspective. Cheers, Andreas
@eyespy0099 aww.. my flaks are a little narrow for me.. if half jackets are narrower i might reconsider having one.. i love 'em!! quick question.. does the half jacket provide a secure fit as flaks are? im pretty psyched when i fell from my bike while mountain biking and knowing my flak jacket are still sticking in my face and knowing it was still in one piece....
They are all white...white ear socks and all. Probably with black lenses...looking at jade also...Just seeing what other people think. You have a ton of oakleys, I was very impressed with your collection. Very cool!
@killjoy350 i have seen them and they are pretty cool. I like how light weight they are and the fact that they are lifestyle frames but have the rubber so if you had to use them for slight sporty activities you could
I have the special edition Ducatis, got them a few years back and am looking at getting some flaks in the near future. Is the width about the same size? They look very similar.
hey there, i might not get to do this video so i'll give you my opinion. for running and cycling the flak jacket will definitely be better. the only one i would say the straight jacket would be better would be for hiking which the flak jacket would work for as well so i would say go with the flak jacket. it's also a bit lighter in weight so that's a plus
amazing video man, u really nailed down alot of the questions i already had. by the way i am thinking of going with the flak jackets after watching your video. Mainly because i have a small face structure. Anything thats too big doesnt look good on me. Any suggestions whether or not i should go with flak jackets or anything else u recommend for the small face?
You might have already done one of this, so please forgive me asking this question if this is the case. Would you do a clip on the difference between the half jacket and half jacket 2.0. Thanks for you videos.
Just copped a pair of Holbrooks clear/chrome...nice frame. Im still not 100% on the chrome lense though. Its a neutral lense and Im kinda used to a more contrasting lense or polarized. I might roll with a pair of Antix next. I was kinda diggin them too. Peace.
yes you are able to do prescription lenses in them but if you want original oakley lenses you are looking at a hefty price depending on your prescription
Hey Eyespy. so i went to the Oakley store yesterday and bought replacement ear socks for my Flak Jackets (which i have only had since the 17th) the woman in the store showed me how to pop the arm off. After doing this again myself at home i noticed the arm i popped off is a little loose. Still fits great just wondering if this will become an issue (does this make the arm less strong). Thanks
@SunnyAZ92 well if you are going to be doing active stuff I would stick with the Flak Jackets since they are the only sports specific model in the ones you mentioned.
thanks for your response! also how well have your glasses lasted? i've been reading a lot lately that a lot of oakleys have problems with durability (frame cracking, lens scratching, etc.) So I am also looking at Rudy Project which seems to be a similar product to oakleys but with a better guarantee... have you heard anything about how Rudys are in comparison to oakley? Thanks again!
Hi, would you maybe do a straight jacket vs flak jacket? I'm stuck between the two. I tried them both on and they both fit great. I'm going to be using the glasses mainly for hiking, running, and cycling. So I was kind of leaning toward the flak jackets for the semi-frameless design (I figure semi frameless = more ventilation/less fogging)
does putting oakley sunglasses on top of your head make them looser over time? I just got a pair of flak jackets and I've been putting them up on my forehead because I heard that that doesn't stretch the glasses out as much. thanks!
@eyespy0099 I saw! He's rocking the Live Strong edition! Be sure and look for a Flak Jacket team up in the next FMX (Force Multiplier) vid coming very soon!
@Bsblrook2 that's ok, they are very sporty and not for everyone. that's why oakley has so many selections. Maybe you'll find something that will interest you and look good too lol
the radar path will be wider on the frame than the flak jackets so i'm not sure how they would fit. also the lens is a single piece lens so again they might be a bit on the big side
unfortunately i don't know much about Rudy Project but as for my oakley I have never had any manufacturer issues. as for the lens scratching, that will obviously happen seeing as they are not scratch resistant but it all depends on how you take care of them
Hi there brother, excellent job doing all these reviews, you're helping a lot of people like me who can't see all these Oakley models on local stores, thanks a lot! Quick question for you if i may, do you think OO Black Iridium Polarized will be less "flashy" for use as leo? Have you ever try those? Or should i stick with Grey Polarized lenses? Thanks!
hey there, well anything with Iridium in it will give the lens a mirrored look. The OO Black Iridium Polarized will also give the lens a slight rose tint to it if I remember correctly

9 year old video and it's still legit. Thanks for this.

@LordRuckus i believe the asian fit is the same frame size, it's the nose pieces or the nose bridge that is actually larger
Great vid! Really want a pair of Flak Jackets! they look sweet
Wow - Great review - that helped me to make my decision - Thanks so much for taking the time to help buying like me!!!!!
Excellent review bro.
I really dig those Matte black ones,,they look really nice.I like how they wrap around the eyes.
Holy shit!
when u started flexing the earsocks and took it off of its hinges i almost screamed and cried
@mmz77 great choice but make sure you just don't go by look, make sure they fit comfortable as well
Couldn't agree more. Standard half jackets with standard lenses for the sporty stuff, and the flack jackets with XLJ lenses for a more casual, all day pair of sunglasses. @grnblink416 i think they would fit better than the half jackets. but i would probably recommend the XLJ lens
@SunnyAZ92 well if not the flak jacket then i would definitely go with the monster dog for every day use and for many occasions.
Great video , thank you ! Picking up my first pair of Flak jacket xlj vr28 ... Just cans decide in frame color but that mat black is siiiiiiiick
Great video. Pretty in depth. I do have a question though. Which would you recommend for fishing? I usually wear a baseball cap when fishing. I'm looking for one that's lightweight and comfortable. I fish often and for hours. Thanks in advance.
Great job, thanks it helped so much I'm planing on getting a pair of flak jacket because of you thanks you just gain a subscriber! :)
@GermanPotatoSoup i'm assuming it mean miles per hour but i'd have to see were you saw it at. i have not done a review of those styles because unfortunately i only own the XX. also since they are pretty much discontinued it would be difficult for people to find them.

@bballmandell yes, the rubber on the legs and nose help that
Great review, thanks! I was wondering myself which of the two frames I should get.
Great review, concise but gave all the right info (IMO) that I was looking for. Looks like I'm going with the Flak XLJs.
@Copglock i think the flak jackets will serve you well as everyday sunglasses and also when you become a cop. i don't think you would need to but another pair
@SunnyAZ92 the glasses are assembles by pressure hence no metal hinges so they will all loosen up after a while
@kani9000 it all depends on fit as far as whcih to go with and yes the half jacket is older than the flak jacket
@mrbilldo4 the main difference is the pearl white has a bit of a sparkle to it
Yes, very good review. I'm buying the flak xlj's. Thanks
@KShade40 i would probably recommend fire iridium instead of ice
Love them flak jackets! Great vid, dude.
Hey bro!
Have you had the chance to try out the new SOLFX lenses yet? Thinking about buying the halfjackets with those lenses through SI. Would be nice to get a review on them from a tactical perspective.
Cheers,
Andreas
Great review, thanks for posting
Vid / sound quality was great
Which do you prefer? I am leaning towards flak jackets, but i may look into radars or some other type.
Thanks a lot man great review I am getting mine from Amazon so I was wondering about certian things which you covered. Thanks again
@pelon88114 I think what you want is transition lenses. You can't have transition and polarized
They are all white...white ear socks and all. Probably with black lenses...looking at jade also...Just seeing what other people think. You have a ton of oakleys, I was very impressed with your collection. Very cool!
@killjoy350 i have seen them and they are pretty cool. I like how light weight they are and the fact that they are lifestyle frames but have the rubber so if you had to use them for slight sporty activities you could
Hey love your videos. Do you have a pair of radarlocks yet? I like the fit if them a lot more than regular radars and they feel a lot more sturdy.
I have the special edition Ducatis, got them a few years back and am looking at getting some flaks in the near future. Is the width about the same size? They look very similar.
@billypritchard3 yes, i think the white will really make the fire lenses pop
hey there, i might not get to do this video so i'll give you my opinion. for running and cycling the flak jacket will definitely be better. the only one i would say the straight jacket would be better would be for hiking which the flak jacket would work for as well so i would say go with the flak jacket. it's also a bit lighter in weight so that's a plus

This video is great.. It convinced me to get some half jacket xljs. I love them

@playbaseball365 that color is called slate which is a grey color
yes you are able to do prescription lenses in them but if you want original oakley lenses you are looking at a hefty price depending on your prescription
I'm looking at getting a pair of flak jackets...What's your preference on matte and polished white? Which looks better?
yes, they are sports specific so if they fit properly you can

Awesome Review... Thanks from Panama City, Panama
@GunWebsites awesome, thanks for watching
@fyebye24 i would say to go with what fits best out of the two. they are both sports specific so you can;t go wrong with either
thanks for your response! also how well have your glasses lasted? i've been reading a lot lately that a lot of oakleys have problems with durability (frame cracking, lens scratching, etc.) So I am also looking at Rudy Project which seems to be a similar product to oakleys but with a better guarantee... have you heard anything about how Rudys are in comparison to oakley? Flak Jackets are the most comfy shades ever made!
I just got a pair of flak jackets and I've been putting them up on my forehead because I heard that that doesn't stretch the glasses out as much. thanks!
@SuperKane08 it's on the left lens just like any other
@phlemdog awesome, definitely give us an update on how they hold up
do you have the oakley Ice Picks?or have you seen them their so cool.
@SunnyAZ92 yeah i mean that would give you two sports specific pairs but at least they would be different in style
the radar path will be wider on the frame than the flak jackets so i'm not sure how they would fit. also the lens is a single piece lens so again they might be a bit on the big side
@eyespy0099 Thank you for replying :). Is Hydrophobic lens available only for Flak Jackets or Half jackets too ?
@me2menow17 no i have a white flak jacket and a white half jacket, same color frames but different models
unfortunately i don't know much about Rudy Project but as for my oakley I have never had any manufacturer issues. as for the lens scratching, that will obviously happen seeing as they are not scratch resistant but it all depends on how you take care of them
Since you own both models, just wondering if their lens are interchangeable? thx in advance
The OO Black Iridium Polarized will also give the lens a slight rose tint to it if I remember correctly
eyespy0099 Thanks for the quick reply! I see, thing is, i can only find these SI online, so i have to order them, and they come with the stock Grey lenses on, but i need the Polarized plus, especially for summer, in where im from..And indeed, as you said, Black Iridium is a bit shinny for work.. Was hoping that things with OO would be different.. Is there any darker colour than Grey polarized then, if you know? Oakley's site is not enlightening at all..
+eyespy0099 with those rounded lenses.. you can even see the light comes through the bottom and sides..
+jackab111 those are matte black Flack Jackets with black iridium xlj polarized lenses
@eyespy0099 Hello, I've been looking at Oakleys for a little while, went and tried some on yesterday and I love the Flak Jackets, I am buying the XLJ with polarized Thursday I hope, yet I have always liked transiton lenses, do you know where I would be able to obtain just the g40 transition lenses for the FJ's? I won't be buying the lenses soon, but I would like some to put in later for just everyday in and out of places.
Thanks for any help

@eyespy009
I recently bought the asian fit flak jacket and i really loved them! however, i noticed that everytime i open/close it the hinges squeak. is this normal for a new flak jacket or should i put some lubrication like oil or something in the hinges?
@xxEdwardxx21 you should get whichever fits better
@TheLittleWorldofGaz they are pretty durable. a lot of military, law enforcement and athletes wear them because of it
I am 12 years old and I plan on buying oakley sunglasses like the flak jacket. Do you think I can get clear lenses on them, and can I get the lenses specially made to polarize when in the sun? I plan to use them as full time glasses for every day use. Please reply. Thanks.
do you think all white with fire lens would be a good combo for the flax jackets
Dude, you look a lot like Jose Bautista. Cool vid thanks for the overview.
Excellent video, thank you.
@13putty that all depends on what you will be using them for and fit
@pshynerd yes, the flak jacket is a wider frame
@pshynerd i know when they first started making photochromatic lenses they were available for the half jacket but i'm not sure if they are anymore. you might be better served calling oakley directly
