Ryobi 30cc 4 Cycle in a Prather Commander 46" boat

  • This thing is hilarious. I got a ryobi weedeater awhile back for dirt cheap. It was on clearance at home depot for $40. I couldnt believe it, this is usually like $160-$180. All I wanted was the engine lol, and this was the vehicle I wanted to put it in. I posted the idea to a few of my favorite groups, and although well received, a few people told me I was wasting my time. One guy said it wouldnt even plane. The result was pretty good, save for a few lil problems. One is that the cooling system cant keep up and adding water cooling will be a pain in the ass. All in all, its not bad. Its no firebreather, but its torquey as hell and plenty fast enough for me.

    I love this boat, it's fast enough and it doesn't attack your ears like a 2 stroke does :)

    Wow, that engine sounds so much more pleasant than the typical boat engine.

    I was looking at videos for a new weed eater how much happier with your video than the other ones. Bad thing is now I need to find a boat and a weed eater and let the weeds grow. 😂

    Open out the windscreen as air vents, right now the air is being directed over the top of your motor.
    I love the 4 stroke sound and speed, considering a build like this myself with an Apache 58, great job there👍

      Really appreciate that. I have another video of this boat & motor where its a lil faster, the previous owner put a fairing over the driveshaft tube for stability but it took away top speed. I removed it before I shot the other video. I'll fix the end screen so it recommends that one

    what is the diameter of your propeller use in your rc boat ?

    That boat moves! I'm in the process of building a boat with a 2 stroke engine.

    I put a new homelite wacker engine in my 42" fountain and also installed a huge jet drive. I added nitro fuel to fuel and ran choke halfway. The boat was insane!

      Putting nitro fuel with regular fuel has ZERO benefit 😂😂😂

    One thing you could try is gearing up the propeller so it runs faster than the engine crankshaft. The 4-stroke engine runs a little slow for this kind of deal, but the Ryobi 30cc probably produces about 1 HP, enough to go like a bat outta hell when the prop is appropriately driven. Also, you could just try a prop with coarser pitch.

      I tried using a 3:1 belt over drive with a honda gx22 in a 1.5m heavy glass v with a 70mmx 1.4 prop , needed more power. Now running direct drive 7014 three blade, having fun.

      Same diameter and pitch but one extra blade, have ordered a 7516 two blade to see if there's anything to be gained

    Maybe cut the cooling fins off and use brakeline out of copper to make a water cooling coil?

    • @scruffynorseman
      @scruffynorseman  ปีที่แล้ว

      The shape of the cylinder & timing belt & ignition parts in the way made it less than ideal for water cooling. I ended up going back to a 2 stroke, the 4 stroke was just too heavy.

    Look up boost bottles. A little closed tube that comes off the carb for more powertude. I little motorbike pipe chamber would add a lot of power. But I bet you already knew all that. I am putting a 52cc on my 3 person inflatable kayak, it should do around 8 mph.
    My buddy has a Zanoa 42cc on his motorbike. Does 38 easily. Rok on!

    Just stumbled across this video, very nice build. Wondering what transmitter and receiver combo you're using for the live rpm and temp feedback?

    • @scruffynorseman
      @scruffynorseman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, I'm using a flysky fs-it4s transmitter, fs-ia6b (has to be "b" or theres no telemetry) receiver with flysky temp and rpm sensor modules attached to the receiver. temp sensor is wedged between fins on the head, rpm sensor is stuck to the starter housing and uses the flywheel magnet for a trigger.

    What size propeller do you have?

    • @scruffynorseman
      @scruffynorseman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm using an old Octura Y567, it had too much pitch for the 2 stroke, but worked great with the extra torque from the 4 stroke. Also, the boat could have gone faster, the previous owner installed a fairing in front of the driveshaft tube where it exits the hull. I removed it and got some more speed.

    Stock Ryobi engine I’m assuming. Build that SUCKER make a header advance ignition timing index the plug. port and polish larger carb mill the head there is quite a bit you can do for little to no money. Just a little common hot rod knowledge.

    • @scruffynorseman
      @scruffynorseman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hell yeah lol. Pretty much stock, Only mod I did was retard the cam timing by 1 tooth, raised its free rev rpm from 8500 to 10,500. Got 8400rpm out of it wide open in the boat. Can't change ignition timing though. Might weld up a lil header for it.
