  • I scratch made 8 plant milks. I taste test each and give the cost for each milk. Most milks are easy to make, some take a bit more work. Some are super delicious and some...well, maybe not so much. Check out the video and see for yourself. Which milk will you like the best?
    Recipes below.
RECIPE NOTES: you can add a pinch of salt if you like. If you'd like to sweeten or flavor your milk, I like to add either 2 tablespoons of chopped dates to the blender or 2 tablespoons of maple syrup to the finished product along with 1.5 teaspoons of vanilla extract. You can adjust the amounts based on your taste preferences.
When soaking nuts/beans, cover them with about 3-4 cups of water.
For straining milks try a milk bag, several layers of cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer.
All milks should be refrigerated. They should all last about 3-5 days, if you can keep them around that long.
    ALMOND MILK:
    1 cup raw almonds
    4 cups water
Soak almonds in water overnight or in boiling water for 4-6 hours, Drain and rinse almonds. Place almonds and water into the blender and blend for about 2 minutes. Strain, squeezing bad tightly until all milk is released. Pour into container and refrigerate.
    CASHEW MILK:
    1 cup raw cashews
    4 cups water
Soak cashews in water overnight or in boiling water for 4-6 hours, Drain and rinse cashews. Place cashews and water into the blender and blend for about 2 minutes. Straining this recipe is optional, although I did find small pieces of cashews in my milk.
    COCONUT MILK:
    2.5 cups shredded, unsweetened coconut
    4 cups water
Add the coconut and water to a blender. I blended for 2-3 minutes. Then strain well, being sure to squeeze all of the milk out of the bag. Refrigerate.
    HEMP MILK:
    2/3 cup hemp hearts
    4 cups water
Place hemp hearts and water into the blender. Blend for approximately 2 minutes. Strain well and refrigerate.
    OAT MILK:
    1 cup rolled oats
    4 cups ice water
Place rolled oats and ice water into the blender. Blend for no longer than 30 seconds. Strain well, but do not squeeze tightly.
In order to prevent oat milk from becoming slimy, use ice-water, do not blend for more than 30 seconds and shake bottle well before serving.
    RICE MILK:
    1 cup rice
    4 cups water
Soak rice overnight or in boiling water for 4-6 hours. Drain and rinse rice. Add to blender with 4 cups of water. Blend well for about 2 minutes. Strain well and refrigerate.
    SOY MILK:
    .5 cup dried soy beans
    4 cups water
Soak the soy beans overnight or for 4-6 hours in boiling water. Drain and rinse the soy beans. Add the soy beans and water to the blender and blend for 2-3 minutes.
Pour mixture into a medium pot. Bring to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes. Scoop off any foam that arises on the mixture. When it's finished cooking, remove from burner and allow to come to room temperature.
    Strain very well and refrigerate.
    WALNUT MILK:
    1 cup raw walnuts
    4 cups water
Soak walnuts overnight or in boiling water for 4-6 hours. Drain and rinse walnuts. Add walnuts to the blender with 4 cups of water. Blend for about 1 minute. Strain well, squeezing out all of the liquid. And refrigerate.

I couldn't imagine making the soy milk, but the almond milk seems really easy. And cheaper.

Yeah, the soy milk is a bit of work - not really worth it in my opinion. But the almond was so good and really easy.

Great Comparison! I've been purchasing plant milks since 2016 and just now discovered how easy it is to make them at home. I made my first oatmilk 4 days ago and already made another batch it was so good. I'm a convert! I typically buy oat ,almond and soy milks. I don't buy cashew or coconut milk soften but those are the ones I still would buy at the store. The recipe I used to make oatmilk used 1cup oats, 4 cups water and 1/4 cup raw cashews. The cashews made it creamy and perfect for coffee and it foams up in my frother.

Thank you. Isn't it so easy to make plant milks at home? And in most cases, the flavor is so much better from the made-at-home version. I'm gonna try the oat/cashew mixture. I bet it's really good and it sounds so creamy.

@@cookinglivewithlala Its so easy, except for the soy. I'm a convert! You convinced me to try the walnut milk next.

@@Sryker Honestly, I don't think the soy was worth the trouble. And at least for me, it wasn't cheaper. But def try the walnut - it's so good!
