  • Appologies for the poor video quality.
The clip starting at 1:00 roughly, is the 5 slot motor. The original title is wrong.
My friend had been running a 3 slot, 27 turn Surpass Hobby 540 motor in his Vaterra Ascender on 3s for quite some time and was fairly happy with it coupled to a Hobbywing 1080 ESC.
He recently bought a Surpass Hobby 13 turn 5 slot 540 motor to replace it with and was nice enough to send me some before / after clips over Whatsapp.
The 5 slot has superior slow speed control and feel, but it has slightly less punch / power and maybe some less torque under heavy load conditions.
He's leaving the 5 slot in, as much prefers how it drives.

What if its was the same number of turns for both? 27T 3 slot vs 27T 5 slot. Would it still be a weaker punch than the 3 slot?

A 27t 5 slot motor would be incredibly slow top speed, have very low torque and also next to no punch. I have a 20t 5 slot motor and it is comparible to a 55t 3 slot motor.

@@scottishrc7857 i see. I am building with a crawler kit. Which would you suggest, (1) 540 3 slot 35T, (2) 550 3 slot 35T, and (3) 550 5 slot 20T. The 5 slot one is like double the price of the 3 slot here at my place. I plan to use for rock crawling and river based trail

@@Saufiuddin From those motors, i would use the 540, 2 slot 35t motor. It will provide the best combination of wheel speed and torque on 2/3s lipo.
I tried a 35t 550 before and it was way too slow. The 550's are much slower for the same amount of turns.
I think a 20t 550 5 slot would be way too slow as well, as i use a 12t 550 5 slot in my TRX-4 and it's slower than the stock motor

@@scottishrc7857 those are some great insights. Last question, What about between a 540 3 slot 35T and 540 5 slot 20T?

@@Saufiuddin I personally would prefer to run the 35t 540, 3 slot. on 2 or 3s it will provide more torque, and more speed and have a better drag brake.
The 20t will have a much slower start up speed and will also have slightly better slow speed control but it will feel quite weak in comparison to the 35t 3 slot.
All of these motors are closer matched to a 35t 540 3 slot in terms of rpm
      16t 540 5 slot
      27t 550 3 slot
      12t 550 5 slot

i've been thinking about upgrade to 5 slot,
cause my rc need more speed but dont want lose torque

@@widekhastomo The 5 slot motors are nice on rocks because the throttle feels so smooth and liniar but you do lose a little bit of torque and punch with the,.
I still use 5 slot motors in some of my RC's but others just regular.

      @@scottishrc7857 and if you put in a 550,can you make more torque?and speed? My bomber rr10 motor broke, and i want to replace...so i think the holmes h crawlermaster 550 12t 5 slot....with a 1080...hope it works😀

@@PeasantNo.471 Thats an okay combination on the Axial Bomber but i'd personally prefer the Holmes Hobbies Trailmaster Sport 550, 21t for that truck. It will have a little more torque and speed than the Crawlmaster Sport 550 12t 5 slot but less slow speed control.

Minute 1:52 the 5 slot have problem to control climbing speed and hopp where the 3 slot have a bit higher crawl speed but a more controled smoother ride. Even when my 5 slot need to climb a vertical obstacel from full stop it need more punch to start climbing than my 3 slot . I am back on my 3 slot.
