He wasn’t drafted to broadcast/analyze… but it’s kind of a moot point since Jamarcus Russell is the biggest draft bust. At least Ryan actually TRIED to be a quarterback.

i think a big reason why he has always been considered the biggest bust is due to the success of Peyton Manning. If he was drafted 2nd overall in say 2005 with Alex Smith as the #1 pick would we be talking about him as much in these draft bust conversations?
Its why Darko Milicic is always going to be considered one of the biggest draft busts in the NBA, cause he was selected over melo, dwade, and chris bosch. Or sam bowie, cause he was selected over jordan.
I suppose that counts as a win, but you can only respect Leaf's self-awareness. Many would do well to learn from that.

The average NFL career is 3 years. Ryan Leaf played for 4 seasons. Regardless of his performance, he was in the league longer than most.
That’s a really poor metric though. The average NFL player includes tons of guys that are late draft picks/UDFA’s and practice squad guys that get cut before training camp is over that teams had no investment in at all. A “bust” is return on investment, so using a stat mostly made up of low investments is meaningless. What’s the average career of a 1st round pick, a #2 overall pick. I’d bet a lot longer than 4 years.
