Now that you have your modded PS2 online, an awesome companion guide to this would be one that walks through playing socom online. There is still a community that plays the socom games online. There are lots of guides but Blaine’s are the absolute best and would be an awesome addition to this modded console.
Tnanks! like your idea. Downloading content from the archives through PSBBN is just the beginning of online on the PS2 in 2025. It's an extraordinary system with an even better community around it.
Great video. Only suggestion I can make is that if you''re ever using a terminal in linux, you don't have to hit enter a few times to clean things up. If you just type "clear" (without the quotes) and press enter, it will remove all previous lines from the terminal.
Tjamls! This was the most robust guide I've ever produced for TH-cam. The thing I kept finding with PSBBN guides was that getting Linux up and running, updated, and capable of cloning the GitHub repo was often glossed over. Linux is AWESOME, but it only has about a 4% adoption rate, so a lot of folks aren't familiar with it and it can seem daunting.
Thank you! I really enjoyed writing it. I learned so much about the history of gaming in the process. Dozens and dozens of systems I learned about through the research. Now I just have to get that FM Towns Marty for my collection...
Why you give me so much to do? I'm definitely going to try this soon. I can only skim for now but this is going to be a project but looks well worth it. Its like having a dashboard, something I've enjoyed on the OG XBOX for 20-some years.
Thanks! I know there are a lot of steps. The good thing is once the Linux boot disk is set up, you'll only need to run a single step each time when you want to add or remove games. It'll also auto-download the art files for you when you do. Go for it! I think you'll dig it.
Thanks! I never left, though. I just spend a week researching and testing the best ways to simplify and explain it all, along with recording and editing the video itself.
Yes, there's definitely work to do on the front end. One of the value propositions for it is that once the work is done, you can just add/remove games using the 3rd script and the games, and the artwork, are handled automatically. It's a great option.
Hi Blaine!. Awesome!. Is it possible to use a third party adapter without the eth port? Looks like the connection is just used for the online content but nothing else. Thanks!
PSBBN is a beautiful interface and a lot of fun! But if you are happy with your setup, that is a fine way to go as well. One option would be to buy a 2nd drive and dedicate it to PSBBN. The 1TB SSD from PNY in the video was a whopping $45 on Amazon. Prices sure have fallen lately on SSDs, and that good for us all. :)
Are there any options for how you view your game collection? I like the artwork but wonder if you can put it on the left hand side versus the right. And if there is a faster way to scroll through your games, or switch to a list view instead of cover art?
Thanks! I don't think it's a thing, as least not yet. I haven't seen in the videos from CosmicScale (the dev that patched PSBBN to English) that it's a function of PSBBN. It will still natively play DVD discs, though.
Currently it will only utilize up to 2tb. There is a work around but it involves editing the install script and you can never add more games/alter partitions afterwards.
THanks! Oh, no, 1TB isn't the requirement, or even the max. You can now use drives up to 128 Petabytes (WOW!) and up to 700 games, according to CosmicScale, the modder that designed the English patch.
Thanks! Yes, Linux can now mount a read/write volume in PlayStation File System format on an HDD or SSD. This is thanks to the works that modern CosmicScale and others have done to make it possible.
You make it sound as if an Internet connection is required on the ps2 to even access your local hdd games, however there is no mention of this on the project creators TH-cam channel. Is it actually required or no? Im not going to run cat5 across my house for this lol.
That's right! The PS2 games load natively and the PS1 games use a launcher called Popstarter to launch the games and use the PS2's backwards compatibility.
Still gotta have the official Sony one. PSBBN runs a check for the PlayStation Broadband Network adapter each time it boots. If it doesn't find it, it will lock up the software.
Actually, it works with the slim too but only on SCPH-70000 series as it still has IDE hidden on the motherboard (SCPH-75000 and newer isn’t compatible at all) but it’ll require soldering skills and its called PS2 IDE resurrector where the SD card on the slim behaves like a HDD.
Not at all. You can use a regular USB flash drive or solid state drive, or even an HDD in the dock. As long as your PC can recognize the attached USB device as a boot disk, you're golden.
It also works with the slim too but only on SCPH-70000 series as it still has IDE hidden on the motherboard (SCPH-75000 and newer isn’t compatible at all) but it’ll require soldering skills and its called PS2 IDE resurrector where the SD card on the slim behaves like a HDD
Yes but you need to add the needed POPS emulator files yourself, and convert the PS1 game discs bin&cue files to VCD. Google the POPS compatibility list for whether your games would work or not
I think that will depend on the type of connection you use from the back of the PS2. For this example, I used HD Retrovision component cables and a RetroTINK 5X Pro. It handled the deinterlacing and upscaled to 1080p. The only settings for video I found in PSBBN natively were 4:3 or 16:9 and one for RGB or component.
Absolutely. I figured that most folks probably don't have Linux already up and running and just want enough of it to do the needed tasks for the guide. I actually really dig Linux. It's powerful and has an amazing community around it.
I get that. Linix isn't as commonplace as Windows/Mac and there are somethings about it that are proprietary in how they're used. At least at this time, I don't think it'd be possible to set up PSBBN in English and copy over the games without it.
This project isn't for people that are okay with just emulation. This is for the elite few that are willing to learn and work to enjoy the authentic experience. Enjoy your games as you wish, and so shall we.

Finally! A PSBBN video! I've been waiting for this for a long time.
Awesome! It's really transformational for PS2 fat model owners. You'll love it!
Wow when you say in-depth, you *mean* it! Looking forward to trying this mod!

The PS2 mod scene is AMAZING. Super talented decs like CosmicScale make the PS2, and the community around it, awesome.
was waiting for this the longest time. this mod is most impressive in playstation consoles.
Awesome! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. As a fellow PS2 fan I put a lot of heart into making it. :)
nice Roll the Bones shirt! an underappreciated album, even among Rush fans.
Agreed! Ghost Of A Chance is my favorite track. I saw they're releasing a 50th Anniversary set this year. That's cool!
Love the channel and appreciate everything you do!
Thank you! Much appreciated. :)
Man. The PS2 asthetics is unmatched. Very atmospheric.
I saw Chicago play in St Louis about 10 years ago. They played for 3 hours straight. Never realized how many band members they have
That's awesome! I would love to see them while they're still touring, especially while they're with Earth, Wind, & Fire.
Perfect timing because I was JUST going to do this today
Awesome! Go for it! I think you'll dig it. It's a beautiful, first-party Sony GUI and works incredibly well.
Thanks for pointing put your book. I definitely need to pick up a copy.

Awesome! Go for it! I think you'll dig it. It's a beautiful GUI and first party Sony to boot.
The greatest. Thanks for this brother
You're welcome! It's a real game changer, isn't it?
Make some tutorials to upgrade the modding on the ps2 slims also...
Definitely! I haven't forgot about the many Slim owners. :)
Welcome back!
Thanks! I never left, though. I just spend a week researching and testing the best ways to simplify and explain it all, along with recording and editing the video itself.
Love this guy
Thanks! You're not so bad yourself. :)
Seems like a lot of work just for a slightly better UI and some novelty items. But this is cool if you haven't already modded a PS2.
Yes, there's definitely work to do on the front end. One of the value propositions for it is that once the work is done, you can just add/remove games using the 3rd script and the games, and the artwork, are handled automatically. It's a great option.

Thank you! Always grateful for you being here too. :)
Hi Blaine!. Awesome!. Is it possible to use a third party adapter without the eth port? Looks like the connection is just used for the online content but nothing else. Thanks!
Hi! PSBBN needs the official Sony Broadband Adapter at this time. On startup, PSBBN looks for that specific hardware and will crash without it.
Guess I have to update my PS2!
PSBBN is a beautiful interface and a lot of fun! But if you are happy with your setup, that is a fine way to go as well. One option would be to buy a 2nd drive and dedicate it to PSBBN. Currently copying over 1tb of ps1/2 games with step 3 as we speak!
Great video
Just one question, what to do if I wanted to transfer my own videos to the hdd?
Thanks! I don't think it's a thing, as least not yet. I haven't seen in the videos from CosmicScale (the dev that patched PSBBN to English) that it's a function of PSBBN. It will still natively play DVD discs, though.
Thanks, Blaine. Quick question: Does it have to be a 1 tb, or can we use a 2tb or higher
You can use up to 128pb
so yeah you can whatever save you want
Currently it will only utilize up to 2tb. There is a work around but it involves editing the install script and you can never add more games/alter partitions afterwards.
THanks! Oh, no, 1TB isn't the requirement, or even the max. You can now use drives up to 128 Petabytes (WOW!) and up to 700 games, according to CosmicScale, the modder that designed the English patch.
Would you need an external memory card for saving your games or will the software create virtual memory cards for games?
OPL which is what psbbn uses to launch games may have VMC support.
I believe that OPL will help with virtual memory card support.
The Best console of all times
I haven't delved into trying to run emulators in PSBBN. I'm not 100% sure it's readily available.
Somehow I still prefer the old fmcb look
Is this playing PS1 games natively or it's still emulation from POPStarter?
Popstarter
Natively. It uses an app called Popstarter, which is a launcher, to load the games to be run on the PS2 backwards compatibility.
wow! excellent! I do need this. :D linux now can mount rw a pfs??
Mr Locklair! It is just clear command. :D
Thanks! Yes, Linux can now mount a read/write volume in PlayStation File System format on an HDD or SSD. This is thanks to the works that modern CosmicScale and others have done to make it possible.
Hi, Is there a possibility to add old games for Sega and Super Nintendo in addition to these?
Does this have a different way to swap discs for MGS or final fantasies?
VCD is not "Video CD" it's Virtual CD.
Noted. Thanks for the heads-up!
You make it sound as if an Internet connection is required on the ps2 to even access your local hdd games, however there is no mention of this on the project creators TH-cam channel. Is it actually required or no? Im not going to run cat5 across my house for this lol.
Internet not required to boot to psbbn but you need the official sony network adaptor with sata mod to boot psbbn
No, internet isn't required to just access the games. I just have it in use here so that I could showcase as many features of PSBBN as I could show.
Can you make multiples pop folders and how? I have more then 53gb worth of ps1 games. I have over 300gb
Are ps1 games run though some kind of emulation or is it run by the actual hardware?
PopStarter
They're run through an app called POPS. It's basically a kickstarter that lets the games run properly on the PS2 hardware.
What's the minimum size SD card needed for installing Linux?
Since the games are installed directly on the hdd, I assume it'll play them natively by not emulating?
the ps2 games run native but the ps1 games run over pops emulator
That's right! The PS2 games load natively and the PS1 games use a launcher called Popstarter to launch the games and use the PS2's backwards compatibility.
@@blainelocklair i read on ps2 phat model it realy use the ps1 cpu for running, in ps2 slim its emulating it
If I don't plan to go online with my PS2, can a third-party network adapter be used?
I don't think so because most third party adapters don't have an ethernet port. There's no wifi on PS2
@@BebopMansionyou shouldn’t speak up if you dont have a clue what you’re talking about
@SauceCrusader-kr9hu he is right, only ps2 official with sata mod works with PSBBN
Still gotta have the official Sony one. PSBBN runs a check for the PlayStation Broadband Network adapter each time it boots. If it doesn't find it, it will lock up the software.
@@blainelocklair Thanks, dude!
Do i need the network adopter to complete this guide, I have the sata expansion version only.
So with this mod, can you FTP new games to the HDD, instead of taking it out every time you want to added something.
Not as of now, but the community around PSBBN and the PS2 is ever evolving.
This can't work on a ps2 slim right?
Fat only. It's because PSBBN specifically looks for the PlayStation Broadband Adapter hardware on startup and will crash without it.

Like the other side of the pillow. :)
1:23 not really. Land line has early models a DEV models of BA with Linux distro.
I followed your guide but none of my ps2 games are showing up. Only the ps1 games are.
All I want to know is could I play one of those old Maddens online? lol
EA Sports: if it's in the game, it's in the game. :)
Will this allow you to play games from different regions? Pal and ntscj etc…
You sure can! It uses a launcher app called Popstarter to load them and use the PS2's backwards compatibility feature.
@ thanks a million!
Is this better than the sd2psx?
Do you have to use an SD card?
Not at all. You can use a regular USB flash drive or solid state drive, or even an HDD in the dock. As long as your PC can recognize the attached USB device as a boot disk, you're golden.
I am curious if this would work with a 3rd party network adapter that I picked up while beta testing EQOA way back in the day.
Fat only. It's because PSBBN specifically looks for the PlayStation Broadband Adapter hardware on startup and will crash without it.
Can you swap the x/o?
Not sure. Oh, if only I'd shown the recordings where I accidentally pressed the "X" instead of "O" and vice versa. :)
Will this Funciton with a 3rd Party HDD Adaptor where teh Network Port doesnt actually work...?
It won't. It's because PSBBN checks for the specific hardware in the official Sony Broadband Adapter.
How do we put other apps on this like snes
Downloading 120Gb for PS2 OS system?
It's that and OPL partitions. It's set up during the script 2 process.
does this support GSM and ps3,ps4 controller like opl ?
Not sure, but I don't think so. I'm not aware of anything that would allow PSBBN to look for a USB wired controller, at least not yet.
Yes, it does! It uses OPL as a backend. Everything that's supported by OPL is supported when launching games with PSBBN

Absolutely. I figured that most folks probably don't have Linux already up and running and just want enough of it to do the needed tasks for the guide. I actually really dig Linux. It's powerful and has an amazing community around it.

Well, the goal is to provide all steps needed to get it done. No stones unturned. This video definitely does that and more.

Those are certainly legit options too. This just gives PS2 fat model owners the most powerful setup for their real hardware.

Yeah but some people prefer to play on original hardware. Upscaled PS2 games are cool, but I personally prefer playing them on a CRT.
