Agreed with you. I was studying in English school in Hong Kong long times ago and the subjects were taught in both Cantonese and English, I did not find any problem at all. It’s sad to see what’s happening in Hong Kong now.
It didn't cause you problem then doesn't mean it is not a problem now. When over half the world is learning Putonghua intensively, Hong Kong would have been severely disadvantaged if she didn't equip herself with a gd command of Putonghua.

They were fierce competitors, Mrs Lee came in tops in her studies and Mr. Lee Kwan Yew was second behind her. Mr Lee knew his wife before England. Later he went first to study in England and she went later to follow him after she obtained scholarship. Their love for each other is an inspiration.

英国人走后留下来最宝贵的资源是英式法律，当年先进国家主要都是英语系统，在治理，外交和招商上，英语定为官方用语是最有效率的做法，而且让邻国们放心。
加上第一代领导团队包括李光耀等人要打造的是一个多元种族，人人平等的社会(结果被踢出马来西亚)，英语能降低华，巫，印和其他少数民族之间的文化冲突，因为大家都不佔绝对优势。
因为之前加入马来西亚，国语是马来语，独立后为了避免邻国挑起种族边缘化议题，国语和国歌都是马来语，1993年之前的总统都是非华人。
新加坡中小学生每天早操唱完国歌后都得对新加坡宣誓效忠，信约华语版是：

我係馬來西亞華人，新加坡永久居民，居住20年。覺得現在更應該去中文化，馬來西亞華人傻因爲中文教育，長期被大外宣洗腦。認同你，李光耀根本恨中國反共，尤其蘇州工業園事件。其實英國强硬，因爲習大大超級傻，小學鷄，如果中國逼新加坡英國選邊站，新加坡英國一定選美國。中美之間最大問題不是香港，而是台灣。台灣地位遠高香港，其實香港衰落長遠而言對美國聯盟是好事。香港只有金融業（可以取代），台灣有半導體，而且日韓台灣菲律賓地理位置阻止中國軍事力量衝出第一島鏈。香港金融中心毀滅，資金流入美國，美國仲開心。
