Waarom ik alles in het Engels doe?
Omdat ik video's kijk van Fransen, Denen, Noren, Spanjaarden, Portugezen, Duitsers én heel veel Engelstaligen die allemaal Engels lullen en ook bootjesmensen / liveaboards zijn. Want alleen dan kan je je ervaring wereldwijd delen. En wat blijkt? Mijn video's worden in 127 landen bekeken (zie S03/E01 voor de lijst). Veel van mijn kijkers en abonnees zijn Engelstaligen die mijn video's helemaal top vinden, omdat ze óf familie hebben uit Nederland, of hier jaren geleden zijn geboren en door omstandigheden nu elders op de wereld wonen. En, dat ik dan Engels spreek met een accentje (net als de Fransen, Denen, Noren, Spanjaarden, Portugezen, Duitsers overigens) dan interesseert hen dat geen reet.
In deze video varen we vanaf de kruising van de Nieuwe Maas, via de Oude Maas naar het SPUI. En eenmaal op het Spui deel ik enkele zeer persoonlijke dramatische herinneringen met je; Herinneringen waar mijn psychiater van zal smullen.
Weet je dat Nederlandse ondertiteling aan kan zetten? Doorgaans zo'n 4 uur nadat de video is gepubliceerd. I believe I am from your same generation ....how did we ever survive? Drinking water from a garden hose, riding in the back of the car up by the rear window, no seatbelts. No cell phones...no computers...being outside and playing all day long

Erg leuk je opnieuw te zien op het Spui. Ik zie je bijna nooit naar achteren kijken. Is die spiegel voldoende?
Ja, die spiegel is ruim voldoende en kijkt ver weg, Bootjes varen niet zo hard dan ze snel bij je zijn, dus als ik iets zie bewegen is het vaak vroeg genoeg. Daarnaast vaar ik standaard aan de goede kant van het water en houd ik doorgaans 10m tussen het schip en de wal. Zo vaar ik niemand in de weg. Dat scheelt ook.

I am the same generation!!!! No seatbelt in the back. And "fixed" length (you could adjust manually, but no flexible pre-tensioning as today's cars) on the front seats. No phone at home, but 3 blocks away we have had access to a street phone booth. Which did not work after it has rained...... God, I am old....

How many variants did you look while was searching a boat to buy?
I made a swipe file on my harddisk and still have it. I had a wish- and must-have-list (perhaps I will make a video of that) and checked the boats online, then I saved all the pictures from the sales pages in separate directories and filled in my XLS. That swipe file holds 43 boats. Different brands, models, prices and countries just because those where available at that time. Have you see my "What if everything is possible" video on my channel? I started looking in Summer 2019 and bought Lady Liselot 1 year later. Took me 'so long' because of getting acces to the money (in The Netherlands we do not have boat mortgages any more, so it's cash or business money), and finding the right-for-me boat.
I am now proudly able to state that I have gone through all your videos, except the long sail-along ones. They are in the pipeline. You are such an inspiration that I have started to investigate how I could organize a trip to your area and use a boat renting service to "drive" around. I have a family with 2 small children and my wife is more keen on taking sunbath on a sailing vessel, than running around with fenders and lines, so I am actually planning to sail single-handed while having 3 persons on board doing nothing 🙂
Still I have made up my mind and plan this for the not-so-near future. If you hear a very excited guy trying to greet you from a rental boat it might be me :-)

I can relate to the man in your story. My wife passed seven years ago. I got rid of the RV bus, ski boat, cubby cabin, & Harley Davidson motorcycle. Several months ago I bought a cruiser ⛴️. I figured to start new memories. September 15, 2023 I am still looking for a female companion 57-70 yrs. 🇺🇲

Gewoon een pisemmertje voor onderweg, koffie in de thermoskan en flesje water bij de hand.
Leuk weetje nog de Spijkenisserbrug is gebouwd uit 6 delen van de oude Moerdijkbrug, oude herinnering van mij bij het slopen en opnieuw bouwen van deze brug.

Perhaps the biggest concern about leaving the fly bridge is hoping you will find your way back 🤣
For sure that was the problem when I first got the boat, Bob, but after a week I installed some signs telling me where to go to for the kitchen, toilet and wheel house. Although I think I know my way around by now, I sometimes am lost. Mostly in space, but that's food for another type of video. hahaha
by the way....chichester, slocum, and moitessier never worried about sailing solo. please keep sailing solo. it is good for the soul.
Agreed, but they all went for sea and never had the taste of a good coffee. Hahaha
leuke vidoe weer "buurman" ( ligplaats doeshaven) maar heb nooit geweten dat de bus naar lunetten via utrecht cs ook in amsterdam fietsers aan het opjagen was 🤣
Dank je Erik. Een oud-collega van mij heeft 1 (of misschien zelfs wel 2) boot bij jou in de haven liggen. Dat van die bus: je moet niet alles geloven wat je op internet ziet.
Ik denk dat voor noodzakelijk toiletbezoek op druk vaarwater er wel een puts voorhanden is op het bovendek...😏
De meeste boten hadden een hok getimmerd van waai-bomen-hout. Daar mochten de meisjes zich even verstoppen. De jongens draaiden zich om op de plek waar ze stonden en toonden schaamteloos hun edele delen aan Amsterdam. In alle gevallen was het niet iets waar ik jaloers op werd, dus dat stemde mij (lees: ons) weer gelukkig.

Just out of curiosity is the DC system isolated from your hull. My starter motor has the negative attached to the hull and I think it'll a bad idea

Hoi Henk, ik zal nog steeds het genoegen hebben om je video te bekijken en met je mee te varen. Mooi verhaal uit je jeugd. Nogmaals bedankt voor deze navigatie en tot de volgende video.
Hoi Hans, even twijfelde ik of ik het verhaal wel in de video zou opnemen, maar ik dacht er goed aan te doen dit eens met je te delen.
Ik sta - als platbodem-schipper - altijd buiten aan de 'pin'. Regen, onweer, storm. Ik ben regelmatig jaloers op de schippers van motorjachten en trawlers die warm en droog zitten. Denk aan mij als ik in mijn zeilpak sta :).
Meestal zet ik voor ik vertrek een thermoskan koffie, heb marifoon aan broeksriem hangen. Boterhammen, snoep en muziek binnen bereik. Als ik solo vaar (en dat is meestal) kan ik idd niet zomaar naar het toilet. Bij rustig weer kan ik wel gaan 'bijliggen' en snel (turbo) naar het toilet. Maar bij een goede storm op het Markermeer merk je pas hoe creatief je kan worden .
Hoop dat het je goed gaat. En anders is 'fuck it' een erg goede benadering!
Respect. Dat 'altijd maar in de regen staan' wilde ik voorkomen toen ik op zoek ging naar Lady Liselot. Als ik de afgelopen koude maanden zeilers tegen kwam die stonden te vernikkelen, stak ik mijn duim op. Aan de andere kant, het hebben en besturen van een zeilboot is een soort van sadomasochisme dat wordt omgezet in een verslaving. Dat kan niet anders, omdat anders alle zeilers wel zouden overstappen op motorbootjes. Maar neen, 'we' moeten en we zullen in de zeikende en striemende regen (ik heb ze al gezien met skibrillen) ons bootje van A naar B varen. ;-)
@@MVLadyLiselot Je hebt niet helemaal ongelijk. De ' elementen trotseren' zit bij een fanatieke zeiler vaak in het bloed. Ikzelf drink liever een kop koffie of glas wijn in de kajuit als het rotweer is. Maar soms is het niet anders, dan ben je onderweg en moet je door.
Ik denk wel dat in de planning van de dag zeilers meer bezig zijn met het weerbericht dan motorbootluitjes. We houden van de wind in de kop. Liefst droge wind!

Being from the same generation as you are I have to agree that so much of what the later generations say is unsafe is simply living a normal life. So long as you're not harming anyone just do as you please. No doubt since you live full time on Lady Liselot you are doing just that. What a wonderful life you have mate. I hope to be doing the same thing in a couple of years or so.

I've done the same thing on my boat, left the helm unattended for a minute or less to check something. However, before I do, I check that there are no boats nearby, no obstacles that could represent a potential collision risk. In addition, while I am doing whatever short errand, I am looking outside to confirm that no other boat has entered an area where a collision could be likely.

Hi another great video. Apologies if you have already commented however what licence do you need to cruise the Netherlands. Is it different for size of vessel, tidal or inland. Also communications, vhf?

I think that when you drive a boat that has your nationality (your national flag), in the Netherlands flying the Dutch curtesy flag, the (maritime) rules of your country will be respected. The info Peter gives is correct the moment you hire a boat with a Dutch Flag. I think.

I'm not from the Netherlands, so if someone can explain to me, what is the purpose of the large wooden pallet on older ships from the Dutch canals, usually attached to the right side of the ship. Thank you in advance.
I think you're referring to the leeboards on classic flatbottom barges. As these boats don't have a keel and a very shallow draft they're very sensible to steer in windy conditions. To improve course stability though they use these leeboards on both sides.
