Derek Jarman is one of England's most creative and experimental film makers. He shaped and defined English Underground Cinema for decades. His body of work is inspiring and his spirit lives on.

I was lucky enough to get to know Jarman a little towards the end of his life, and the man that Mark is describing here is 100% the man I knew. I am shedding tears as I write this.

Thank you for this comment. Derek Jarman's films on Channel 4 got me through 19 to 24. It was that bad then, and Derek Jarman was and is that good.

You hardly see Kermode get close to tears. But Jarman definitely means a lot to him like he did to so many!

I had the pleasure and honour of meeting Derek in 1992. I was only 17, but he talked to me in a way not many adults had before. I’ve met countless well known/“famous” people over the years, but would wipe the slate clean and swap many of those meetings if I could go back, and instead have spent the time with Derek, who was far warmer and real.

I so love to see this. Derek Jarman was such an amazing human being, an artist, film maker, gardener and just such a good man. I love that Mark Kermode celebrates him.

Glad to see they made their goal of £3.5M to preserve Jarman's Prospect Cottage and initiate art event, etc. Look forward to visiting the Cottage once it's open.

It's a wonder they didn't build a carpark on it, given this country's ages-old blitheness towards cultural history of any sort.

I used to know William (Bill) Kermode. He and his wife kept a small hotel in Llandrindod Wells. I think I remember Bill telling me his mother or Grand mother was a musical hall star. John Sivorn

I thought the very same thing when watching! I speculated that his feet are likely quite sizable as well.

Yes, 'Sebastiane' is an interesting if uneven work, probably not representative of Jarman at his best. I haven't experienced 'Blue', but it was definitely a highly personal project for the filmmaker.
