I remember this. When i was junior high, in 1999, i only have a Shareware version of Death Rally. I was limited only could buy until Sentinel. On Velodrome track, I can beat Duke Nukem by pushing him out of track, into void beside "start gate" at the moment of start. The AI was confused, (not only Duke Nukem, but all AI will confused), then it will round and round endless. Then another AI, Shrieker, was blown by another opponent, then i win for 3rd place , and got a decent money. Oh, i also used mines to make all opponent die. Even after my score defeat all Shrieker driver, then all Shrieker and Wraith driver came to Medium Level, i can make all of them die. By using mines like you did. Because the tracks are narrow, AI Path predictable, and i can push them to edge of track until they're compressed and made a great damage. They're shooting each others, and i shoot them to death. But what you did on the video is more efficient and more professional. I salut you.
This is officially the CRAZIEST speedrun I've ever seen... ever. And seen smth like a few thousands of them, or so ; even more if you count TASes. I'd say this is so good, it could compare (and with, how Borat would put it, "great success!") even on a TAS level. And if the 22:12 speedrun I've seen is already quite crazy, then this madness... no... THIS IS SPARTA!!! (and tonite we dine in hell I guess: < - tho some may be happy about it I presume) I'm not normally leaving comments like this but this good shit made me, man. Just accept my greatest humble fucking congratulations and take my money! :D Oh wait, no money involved... then please at least try to accept them congrats! : D Practically every race get me blown away, and suffice to say this is still improvable to 1-digit in minutes. (better Adversary luck mostly). I've counted the precise time and it's 10 minutes and half of a second. Wow. Just wow. Finished the game just yesterday on the easiest mode with 1 race more on the boards (and I thought it's the minimal possible value, ha!), but it was a totally different approach, a very lengthy process involving craploads of not only saves/quicksaves, but also savestates. Altho.. having 2 or 3 races with 4 sponsors involved, and 1 with "5" - this was best one - kind of cheered it up : ) After this 'best race' I was greeted by the steroids guy, the x3 win fat sponsor (in DOS version you can win 2 races, then reload any game and get the win bonus every race), the satan, the no scratch sponsor (it surely wasn't your car workshop owner... or maybe it was, because this time he was free from all the dirty work! ; ), and at the race I collected the 'big dollar' bonus and STILL collected enough small bonuses for another half of the big one or so. In other words, it was quite epic : ) But nothing like your totally crazy run. Congrats again, man! Whatever you do, keep on doing it (happy and crazy, I presume)! I doubt it will be a problem seeing the other stuff on your channel, some are quite great! ; D There's a quote I remember... want to do something that's impossible? PLANET23K Them congrats accepted! And a few notes: You're correct in that getting a sub 10-minute run is possible, but it's really hard to get the stars to align perfectly for the entire duration of the run. While collecting big monies and getting those hit jobs/steroid runs is nice, the cool thing about the macro-strat of this run is that even if you only get the minimum amount of money possible (i.e. only the two sponsor bonuses and no pickups), you can still make all the purchases needed at correct times. As you have possibly already figured out, to get the minimum amount of races possible, the driver with 100 points must not win the first race that you skip. After that it doesn't matter because they get deprived of points due to being bodied in every race. And thanks for your kind words! Much appreciated.
I presumed that getting luck like that is very far from easy (one non-adversary race wasn't perfect, but still VERY good) ; lining up mines on adversary seems a very hard task alone. Yeah, noticed that other sponsors aren't really needed : ) It's a nice touch when you return the money to the loanshark in JUST the right time (but there are more of those, like buying mines+sabotage on cheaper car before upgrading, or getting a loan in precise time : ) Actually, at least in theory, it would be possible for every guy/gal on positions 4-7 to win every medium race in a row, and get more points than 110 you get at the end before finally getting 'noticed' by the adversary : P Tho I doubt in such a thing happening, that would be a major bad luck : P The great thing about this run is that every. single. race. is practically outstanding.. speedruns just don't get better than this! My pleasure to watch it, so thank you too! : D
PLANET23K Well observed! You're right about the possibility of a Wraith getting too many points from medium races, but the chances of that happening are very, very small. I've seen a Wraith clinch the #1 spot once or maybe twice during a run, and even then they didn't reach 110 points so it was inconsequential.
There were a few particularly sweet moments in this that I really enjoyed, like grabbing that 4% fix on the Deliverator at 4:50 and that subtle move at the end of next race ... just fuckin classy, I could see you played this shit a lot. PS Only one velodrome - very lucky :)
Hah, yeah! That wrench grab shaved off a few nanoseconds at the shop later due to me having to hit the repair button one time less. Every little bit counts! And yeah, been playing this shit since I was a little kid. All of the tricks and tactics were originally created purely from just messing around. And there definitely was some favorable RNG at play here because Downtowns are such cakewalks compared to Velodromes.
That was amazing :). If you ever decide to stream some runs on twitch you got my full support :3 Theres also someone making a open source version of this game. Hopefull it will be finished at some point. A good multiplayer and mods could give this game new life :)
Voxel is the future... I'm inventing spritexels. They are 2D sprites of one pixel, which are located with coordinates in a 3D world, they always point to the observer's camera. A spritexel conglomerate can form geometric figures. The benefit is that it consumes much less resources and memory than voxels, achieving a similar effect.
I mean, the strategy in beating better cars is sabotage + mines + letting them beat up each other and just finishing the last one. it helps a lot to take duke Nukem's avatar, replacing him with Sam speed because he has tons of bonus armor. My proudest moment was beating three Deliverators with a (fully upgraded) Vagabond on "petrol in my veins". Sure, It was 99% luck: velodrome, I had sabotage, spikes+mines. Jane Honda had like 1% health left during the last round, all others were already eliminated so I faced her heads-on after the 180° turn. During the collision (she had spikes as well), which was probably less than a second my damage went from 0% to 95%, but she really went up in flames. Most epic moment in my years-long career as death rally driver. I might actually still have the screenshot somewhere🤔
Madsy9 It's not the mines itself that deal the most damage (although the damage they deal is the same no matter the car, which is nifty), but rather their pushback which "compresses" all the opponents' cars together so they tear each other to shreds with their guns because they just can't miss at that distance. And the mine placements are mostly educated guesses inferred from a bazillion races over the years. And thanks!
@@TuPLaKinKKu And I think mines do more damage on the easier difficulty levels, as well. In addition to the opponents shooting each other to pieces, if they're equipped with spiked bumpers, there's a good chance they'll do super high melee damage to each other, which can lead to super short races. xD
Thanks! Doing a TAS run could be very interesting, because sometimes it's possible to instantly wreck the opponents' cars by ramming and pinning them against obstacles from a certain angle so if that could be replicated with TAS, it could end races very quickly. As an aside, even without TAS, it's possible to ram the Adversary's car to shit by pushing it against that cage thing right at the final race's start. After practicing it for some time, I managed to pull it off at least somewhat consistently but sadly I totally screwed it up in this run.
Yeah... thing is, I had workshopped a strat that takes the adversary out in about 10-15 seconds with a consistency rate of about 40%. But of course it failed miserably here
Don't think I ever really played the game on the easiest difficulty. I'm certain it is possible, but on the hardest difficulty they seem to shred through what little armor you got and their speed just is impossible to match nearly no matter what car you have.
Thanks! I've thought about doing a run on Petrol in My Veins too, but it would most likely require different tactics due to increased health of the AI drivers, and also the fact that they basically cheat. So, the chances of getting a decent single-segment run seem pretty slim unless I get super lucky.
Holy, what a run! I noticed you still win the race, even though you got lapped. Is it because you were only lapped once? Not sure of the mechanics behind it
When deciding lapping, it seems that the game isn't that interested in the player's current position on the track but rather how far they made it in a lap before deviating from the correct path. All that matters is that the opponents must not cross the furthest point that you've reached, and even that is a bit hazy sometimes because I think there are some checkpoints that the game goes by since sometimes I've gotten a bit leeway, but on the other hand I've had numerous run attempts ruined by taking a sip of water while the flaming wreck of the last opponent slides just past the point of lapping me. I've also seen runs where people get lapped with the audio cue and all, but still get rewarded normally. I have no idea how to replicate that though.
Lapping is weird on this game... My record (not speedrun) on 'Petrol in my Veins' was 13 races... Could be 12 if Sam Speed didn't scored on the first race. I've posted screnshots on Remedy forum a few years ago, Death Rally top scores thread. I may turn back on playing this gem to try some speedruns on speed makes me dizzy :D
what did you do for the 1 race game finishes in the top 3 rank positions and the 10 race finish in rank 4? (referring to the hall of fame image at the end).
Those were some experiments, where I used a cheat code to give me enough ranking points to go straight to the Adversary and tried taking him out with the worst possible car. Honestly, it's probably a combination of them all. I used DOSBox and the original DOS version of the game to record this. DOSBox did break the run into smaller segments when recording because that's how recording in DOSBox works, but after the run was finished, I just dumped them straight into a video editor. So, I guess technically this is done in one take, rather than single-segment. I'll change the description to reflect that. Oh, and those weird scores in the Hall of Fame are the results of some ancient experiments where I went straight to the Adversary and tried to beat that race with the worst possible car. Just look at the score board at the end Nº 1 - ARPIKYSTA - 1 RACE!!!
No one can finish the game in 1 race, you start with 0 point at the Nº has 100 points in the begining... So... this has some serious cheats.
@@francogarcia2668 Umm, that 1 race "win" is completely unrelated to what you see in this video. This was finished in 12 races, which are the ones you see in this video.
And I'd suggest that you go ahead and try this method yourself (keep in mind this was done on Speed Makes Me Dizzy, which makes the opponents' armor weaker). The opponents tear each other apart quite often this quickly.
Omg. Y best before 😢
This "world record" doesn't count though because speed makes you dizzy. Now maybe if you had petrol in your veins....
It's any%, so SMMD was chosen. First learn the basics about speedrunning perhaps?

@@khatack n00b, don't open your gap if you don't even know what you're talking about.
Insane speedrun of one of my fav. childhood games!!
Why didn't you upload this to speedrun.com ?
Thanks! I've been thinking about redoing this run and submitting that run, but somehow life just keeps getting in the way. I should really try to grab that sub-10min run since I've grown so unsatisfied with this one.
