Driveway VS Bleach

  • CORRECTION: I should have said 1/4 gallon of Clorox instead of 25% bleach. Thanks to everyone who pointed out that mistake.
    In my search for a way to clean my driveway with minimal effort, here is my latest attempt: Driveway VS Bleach. After all the years of research and failed experiments I finally have found a solution. And also I did a quick test with some coca-cola, don't waste you time, or coke LOL.
    Heres the mix:
    25% bleach CORRECTION --- This should be 1/4 gallon of Clorox
    75% water
    Spray on, let sit for a while (don't let it dry). Scrub lightly and hose off. Repeat if necessary,

    Good video! Quick tip: Clorox itself is around 6.25% sodium hypochlorite (bleach) concentration, so by mixing it with 3/4 of water, your final concentration will be of around 1.56%. For better/faster results on killing the mold/algae/mildew, try using a 50/50 mix or even 3/4 Clorox & 1/4 water! 😁

    Thanks for the video! Although this is 2yrs old now. I do have 1 possible suggestion. Many years ago I used to work on my car in the back of our house (house was setup weird with our garage in the back). And a good friend of mine who was an experienced mechanic of many years told me to use POWDERED (not liquid) WASHING DETERGENT. Car oil is the hardest to get out, not even bleach had worked. To my surprise, it worked!
    1. Put powder washing detergent on spill(s)
    2. Let it settle for a couple of minutes
    3. Hose or power spray
    4. Repeat if necessary

    Hose your drive down and then brush neat bleach onto it and leave it overnight to soak in and then hose off. Works brilliantly and the bleach that has soaked in continues to work for the following months every time it rains.

    If im not mistaken, the whole reason coke works so well for cleaning is that its carbonated. Its the little bubbles that agitate the dirt, so the problem may have been that you were using older non-fizzy coke.

    • @HWDsouthDIY
      @HWDsouthDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe, it was old but I also thought coke was acidic too. Thanks for watching

    • @stevenjames1028
      @stevenjames1028 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically you are correct, it will not work with "flat" coke. It is carbonated with carbonic acid, which breaks down to carbon dioxide and water. There is no carbon dioxide added to create the carbonation. So, if the coke is flat, the carbonic acid has already broken down, therefore not effective as an acidic substance. Bleach is a base, fresh coke is an acid, just 2 opposite ends of the pH scale, but both can be effective apparently, but I go with the bleach, since it can be put in a sprayer, whereas if you tried to spray coke, it would definitely kill any of the acid component, and would be like spraying brown sugary water on the concrete.

    That's only about 1.5% bleach. Clorox is only 6.25% Sodium hypochlorite straight out of the jug, then you cut to 25% of that using a mixture of 1/4 gallon of bleach to 3/4 gallon of water. So you end up with 1.5625% bleach.

    • @HWDsouthDIY
      @HWDsouthDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say get a sprayer and cover everything evenly. This should at least get the blotchy areas knocked down so they are less noticeable. You can scrub a little more on the dark areas to help lighten them up. If you don't want to buy a sprayer you can mix in a bucket and either broom or use a cheap mop to put it on the driveway. Make sure to cover evenly, then a little scrub, let it sit 5 minutes or so (don't let it dry) and hose it off. It may take a few treatments but eventually you'll get it evened out.

      I used straight bleach without a sprayer and now my driveway looks so blotchy! I don't know how to fix it now? Any ideas?

      @@shannonhieb6933 Buy a sprayer, buy some industrial strength bleach from home depot, and re-do it.

    Good to know, still better not to use environment damaging chemicals where a power hose will do it 😆 It's good to have one too because plenty of people need their driveways clean 😁
