"Somethings lost but somethings gained in living every day". Joni is simply amazing! She had an aneurysm in 2015 and had relearned to speak, and sing, and also had some issues with mobility and memory. Yet she made an incredible comeback and earlier this week, she won a Grammy for her 2022 live performance at Newport Folk Festival, which was her first performance after her aneurysm. Go Joni!
you really should 1st listen to her singing this in her early 20s then this version. you will get a chilling feeling of what life does to us as we age.you can definitely here the difference the years have made
It's amazing that she wrote this when she was in her mid 20s. It is such a powerful song that really makes you reflect on life and how our ideas mature as time passes.
This emotional performance really touched me! Such a wonderfully deep and moving song written at so young an age. Joni is a Canadian national treasure.
No question...Joni Mitchell is one of the most sophisticated and original songwriters of the 20th century. Her guitar work alone would be enough to place her in the pantheon of amazing artists with whom she competed.
The original came out in 1966. You may want to check it out to hear the difference between her young voice and her matured voice. The arrangements are different too. They're both wonderful ~ Gotta Love Joni ~
Beautiful, Joni was 21 when she wrote that. Pretty deep for that age 😀😃😄 The quality of her voice is astounding as she aged. It's the lyrics for me in this song.
This version of Both Sides is as retrospective and melancholy as her original version is hopeful and mystical. Joni is a poet and a genius with lyrics.
Joni is an old soul. She wrote this song at age 23. I never cared for the version she recorded in 1969, because she seemed too young to have experienced so much. But this version...this version wrecks me. By the way, those beautiful paintings that were flashing on the screen during the video were painted by her, too.
I think that it’s important that she did sing it then though, because we can look at the contrast and feel even more moved. I do agree that this is the best version.
@@Mallykins I always request reactors to listen to both versions back-to-back to hear how she matured into the song. And now, of course, we have a live 2024 version to compare those to.
You must listen to this version in conjunction with the original recording; same words, same singer, but it lays a different emphasis on the meaning of the same words -- the original is the hopefulness of the unknown future, the latter looking back at a long life lived. Same words, same song, same singer, a different meaning. Totally amazing artwork.
Poet, Painter, Musical Genius - Joni is a once-in-a-lifetime talent. Isn't it amazing how much music is floating out there in the ether in the upper regions of the air beyond the clouds? Thank you for bringing them down to us with your show. Your hard work is always appreciated, Shawn.
She tells stories in every song she shares. Her energy & grace offer so much to those that listen to her musical magic. I grew up with her lovely pieces and I am truly grateful for that little bit, and continue to this day. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for reacting to this special recording of Joni. She is a musical genius and she is truly a treasure. More Joni please. Great interpretation and reaction to her. 👏👏🇨🇦🥰
She wrote this as an old souled 25 year old visionary. This goes back 55 years and 55 years from now it will be relevant. She is humanity's gift from the Universe
This is amazing and profound songwriting about the universal dialectical mysteries of love and life and how things get in our way. If she only had written this song she'd be remembered as a great songwriter but fortunately she's composed so many more masterpieces. She was only 26 when she released this song. What a talent! You should listen to her earlier version of this song which would be interesting to contrast this later version with the younger singer's approach and interpretation.
Though very good I love her original as I remember her as a 10 or 11 year old !Joni was not that old when she did this version though the years of smoking took a toll on her beautiful voice. The music behind her on this version is spectacular and her phrasing and tone is expressive!Shawn you need to react to her original version.
Great art ages well. This song, I am sure, has only deepened in meaning in the lives of all who heard it back when a 20 year Joni first set it free upon the world.
Everything that Joni ever did is good. You can take that to the bank. I really enjoy seeing that you appreciate how great she is. Not everybody does, but she’s like a masterpiece. She painted all of her album covers too… I put her right up there with Dolly Parton, and I’m a southerner. I would love to see you watch Joni’s 1969 version.
I got this CD as a gift for my birthday that year. Being a massive Joni fan as well as a fan of rock/pop/folk teamed up with an orchestra, it's one of my favourite albums of all time. I love this song, and love the introspection with this new version.
This is Joni revisiting the song she first released in 1968. The two versions couldn't be more different, and I almost think Joni was too young to do it justice when she first wrote it. Definitely check out the original version.
"This song is written very well." Perfectly stated, and such an understatement too. You could say that about just about every song Joni ever wrote. Such an amazing, uncompromising poet, in addition to being a great musician and singer.
Indeed, Judy Collins version of this song was played on the radio constantly in 1968 and actually made this song very well known. Joni's version was a cut on her album.
Joni Mitchell is a great Canadian-American singer songwriter. She covers a lot of genres of music including folk, pop, rock, classical & jazz. She has had so many hits especially in the 60's-80's such as "Chelsea Morning", "Help Me", "Big Yellow Taxi", "The Circle Game", "Woodstock", "Raised On Robbery", "Free Man In Paris" etc.
Joni is capable of looking at existence with a broad swath of vision. She is an existentialist. Ultimately. She doesn't hold onto value where life is concerned, where how one is meant to live......it's relative and it isn't. She grasps at meaning in the quotidian and she lets it go as the days go by.......she paints it and pokes at it with words and then she let's it go.
If you want to listen to live Joni, you MUST pick something from her MILES OF AISLES album. FREE MAN IN PARIS, BIG YELLOW TAXI, A CASE OF YOU, BOTH SIDES NOW,YOU TURN ME ON, I'M A RADIO, BLUE, CAREY, THE CIRCLE GAME, WOODSTOCK. Anything on the album. Released in 1974, it is a tour of her early career, with a great backing band and great sound quality. Try it, you'll like it.
I don't think that's true. This album of re-recordings was made in 2000, well before the aneurism, after which she couldn't sing at all for a long time.
You really need to listen to the 60`s version and then this one and afterwards the 2022 live version live at Newport festival, which is very moving th-cam.com/video/jxiluPSmAF8/w-d-xo.html this clip
Judy Collins had a massive hit with this song in the early 70s. Her version is amazing the full production of studio musicians expanding the depths of this song. Judy Collins, her version is much faster and up-tempo. I compare what Judy Collins did with this song, and what Karen Carpenter did with the song superstar to be examples when somebody took a song and did something amazing with it.
GREETINGS EARTH GUY: Boy Joni's voice has gotten deeper. Must be the ubiquitous cigarettes. I think she may have painted the album cover pic. It could be Judy Collins who's the artist. I always confused the two of them a little. Carry on.
This is a nice re-recording. Her voice sounds MUCH more mature, at that stage in her life, so this version sounds VERY different than the absolutely classic original recording, which I love. This version I like. The original is better, IMHO. ✌❤
Shawn. You are soooo right. I hate to not see the performances. I know the UTube masters make it a bitch to post performers, but it is the ONLY way to " get the passion" of the music.
This is a powerful version of this song, but you really should have listened to the original version first to understand the evolution of Julie and her music.
This is a great song, and Joni's a great singer and writer. You might also try a really good cover by Judy Collins. Here's a link: th-cam.com/video/hURbqFzgMR0/w-d-xo.html It's good. In fact, I became aware of this song through Judy Collins, although I knew who Joni Mitchell was. Great reaction! Thanks, and God bless you!
This is a nice version Shawn, but _nothing_ compared to the original *30 years* younger when her voice was intact. Seriously, it's a different song. There is a great live version done in 1969 by the BBC along with Big Yellow Taxi, very nice sonics, link below: th-cam.com/video/GFB-d-8_bvY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=h6QyJFcVVm-Iuej4
FWIW You're going to lose my viewership every time you don't listen to the original release first. I'm trying to compare my experience to yours. Watching a different version takes that essential part of watching a reaction, away from me.

This is definitely my favorite version of this song. I love the slower pace in which she sings. ❤❤❤
one of the most introspective and beautiful songs ever written & sang.
There is SOOOOOOO much great music from the '60s and '70s. Glad you discovered one of the best writers of the era. :)
This eras lyrics raised me up and will never be repeated.
That's a self-portrait !! Incredible artist!!
Joni Mitchell performed the song at the 2024 Grammys on Sunday. It was her first time ever appearing on the Grammy stage, at the age of 80.
Amazing version.♥Thanks to the person who requested this!

What a wonderful version. This probably appeals to the aficionados more than to new listeners. She's the best there is.
My FAVORITE version! Thank you!
She tells stories in every song she shares. Her energy & grace offer so much to those that listen to her musical magic. I grew up with her lovely pieces and I am truly grateful for that little bit, and continue to this day. Thank you so much!
AHHHHHH, YOU NEED TO DO THE ORIGINAL SHAWN OFF OF HER ALBUM ( CLOUDS ) :) HAVE A GR88888 DAY!
Brings me tears everytime I hear this song...just amazing❤

And years younger when she wrote it;)
There's nothing hard about her singing, if you're her. That comes naturally . She has everyone's great respect
Another great Canadian musician.

I love this song, and love the introspection with this new version.
Reminds me of one of those great "standards"songs of the 1940s. Simple music and great storytelling and lyrics.
Joni's catalog is immense, for a later and more jazz influenced listen try Amelia or Song for Sharon from the album Hejira, pure gold.
This is Joni revisiting the song she first released in 1968. The two versions couldn't be more different, and I almost think Joni was too young to do it justice when she first wrote it. Definitely check out the original version.
Great choice. Very touching song. Beautiful
Joni is just wonderful. Listen to her album "Blue" the best she ever did, not a bad track on it.
I like this version, it's more soulful than the original, but the original is just so much more powerful and emotional.
Beautiful!
Joni Mitchell - Coyote, recorded in Gordon Lightfoot's kitchen with Roger McQuinn and Bob Dylan, put it on your to-do list
"This song is written very well." Perfectly stated, and such an understatement too. You could say that about just about every song Joni ever wrote. Such an amazing, uncompromising poet, in addition to being a great musician and singer.
Love this version. An older woman who really understands the meaning behind words
This re-recording of her song, was a lot slower than her original version. Songwriting is all about inspiration, from wherever it comes.
Indeed, Judy Collins version of this song was played on the radio constantly in 1968 and actually made this song very well known. Joni's version was a cut on her album.

You should hear the original younger version
This is a new recording of an old Joni song from somewhere around 1969. Her voice is much more mature in this version.
♥♥♥
It’s about how what we see and feel and think about something is never really that thing

This is a much older Joni. Both versions are beautiful but this one seems more refined. This was after her stroke.

You can not react to _too much_ Joni. 😊
She’s fantastic one of my favorites, I actually prefer her original version more
The original song was brilliant in 1969.............then she re-releases it like this in 2000..YIKES ! Oh Joni, Oh Canada !
Probably should listen to the original studio for this one one of the greatest songs of all time
Love this song didn't love this version its so much clearer 30 years earlier when it came out.

Kinda think this shouldn't have been re-recorded
I much prefer her original version.
