    It was great you talked about the history of this kit. It certainly has a lengthy one, stretching back through the decades! I built this kit way back in the '70s. Only thing I remember about it was the cockpit glass was a bit tricksy!

    Interesting to see the development of the instructions leaflet, I made this kit in about 1972 when I was 10 years old. I wonder if a 8-10 year old these days could follow those old instructions? Airfix to me was an educational tool, l learned what rudders, fuselages and ailerons were and how they worked, and you had to know why those words were to build the kit. I still love Airfix.

    I do agree with you. BRING BACK THE STANDS! Planes are meant to FLY!!! Love your videos...especially the old Airfix catalogues reviews. Brought back many memories. You also made the right choice not to build this old kit. I got myself an Junkers Ju188 made by Italeari (Italeri) from 1973, still in its unopened plastic bag. No way I'm gonna open that one up. I'll get a newer one I can build instead. The box is near mint also.

    Hello , enjoyed your video, as it brought back happy memories of growing up with AIRFIX. That HEINKEL 111H-20, with the wing assembly had to be done one section at a time, otherwise it would not
    fit into the fuselage if you cemented the two half sections of the wing first.

    Thanks mate, I built that kit probably in 1963 as a kid and therefore thanks for the memories. I remember joining the two halves of that front canopy together and what a mess I made, using Airfix tube glue which was all that was available at that time. No paint was used I think . Seeing the Battle of Britain movie a few years later brought it all to life for me, I remember. I would love to build it once again and make a better job of it next time.
    Cheers & thanks for the memories mate. 🍻✅

    I've got the red boxed version of this kit in the stash. Lots of little marks on the surface of the kit now from where the ejector pins have hit the opposite half of the mould (presumably from transport or storage in the wrong orientation). Fortunately I've got a Falcon vacform canopy set that has He-111 parts so I won't have to wrestle with the original cockpit glazing.

    I remember the MPC "Profile Series" and extra crewmen kits when they came out in the mid 70s here in the US. It was great having different options (I still rarely, if ever, use the kit markings) as aftermarket decal sheets were unknown to some of us!
    These kits were available at the dime stores/pharmacies and not very expensive. Did the PBY, P-47, C-130 (in USCG markings!), AC-47.

    • @MOS6510Models
      @MOS6510Models 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      wasnt airfix a MPC brand? or did they licence the molds and add their own schemes and decals?

    • @mh53j
      @mh53j 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MOS6510Models not sure what the arrangements were. Looking at an MPC "Historama" set of Sword Beach (came out about the same time), box says model (DUKW) was molded in US, figures (Commandos) made in England. Was packaged in the US.Models were definitely Airfix kits though. Some kits may have been molded in the UK and shipped to the US for packaging. Decals, if I remember, were made in the US and had MPC logo on the back of the sheet.
      The C-130 in USCG markings had the extra crewmen; it also advertised " Bonus: additional markings included!" .... Except the "additional markings" were a sheet for an A-1 Skyraider and a Korean War B-26!! I still have them in my stash!

    Great video, I always laugh when people incorrectly scoff at Raised panel lines, that simulates the real and proper welding of the plates, there's no gaps in real panels and the joints are flushed or slightly raised not inset so some half wit can use panel line wash to create a horrific and false look. Good job on the set.

    Remember building this very well, I also remember being disappointed it wasn't the Battle of Britain version but a later type with a mid upper gun turret, not the open gun position. The Profile series is also incorrect, you couldn't make the aircraft illustrated with the kit parts. Great to see all these old kits, makes me quite nostalgic!

      The aircraft is never referred to as a Heinkel "3". The designation indicates that it was the one hundredth and eleventh design from the Heinkel company who referred to it as the Heinkel One One One or the Heinkel One Eleven.
      This original Heinkel He111 is a late war variant and is completely wrong for a Battle of Britain boxed set. Note the turret on the top. Older versions had a fixed perspex cuppola. The new tooling is the correct version for the Battle of Britain.
      The stands are generally available and relatively easy to find. They don't come with the kits any more (sadly) but you can buy a bagged set of various sized stands.. They are identical to those old originals, even down to the fact that they still carry that very old style Airfix signage.

    • @MOS6510Models

      Airfix does have stands available separately (hard to find) and included with Dogfight Doubles kits. Many kits show what holes to open if you plan to use a stand (even on the HC-4 and HAR-3 Sea Kings), but don't include the stand. Geez, just put the stand in!!

    Not one of their best to be honest, even by the standards of the 1960,s and should have been retired long before it finally was. The glazed nose must have given the toolmakers big problems as it was way off in shape, had a seam line right down the middle of the front gun blister and had a poor fit. The best part of it was the landing gear and the two bombs which are good representations of the Luftwaffe`s 1000 Kg "satans". There should also be more windows in the fuselage than it has, particularly round the lower gun gondola. At least the raised details hint at a couple of windows behind the cockpit that may have been painted or plated over. This was one of the times FROG did a better job.

      I have both the Frog AND the vintage Airfix kits. I prefer the Frog kit, but I enjoyed the challenge of the Airfix kit as well. The HE-111 is one of my favorite aircraft, so I purchased both and had fun overcoming the challenges each provided.
