AWD don't have a transfer case but an additional differential so they are not destroying tires while road driving but can get stuck off roading as a free spinning tire can receive all the power. Various different types of differentials and gearing impact that. 4x4 has a transfer case and will deliver power to all the wheels when engaged but with varying gearing. They are not the same. AWD is for pavement and light offroading. 4x4 if for loose ground.
@@toyotausa How does a channel named after a car company not know that AWD is not the same as 4WD, they have different safety aspects, different on and off road driving characteristics. This advice is dangerous and misleading.
@@indolent831 4WD is typically different marketing terminology for AWD. 4x4 is the one that actually sends power to all wheels. AWD/4WD use differentials instead of gears and locking hubs.
@@mynameis.....9179 the gx460 is AWD not 4x4. 4x4 doesn't work well on solid ground beyond going in a straight line. AWD drive sends power to whichever wheels will take it so if one wheel is in the air it will be the only wheel to receive power barring certain differentials like a limited slip which will mitigate the direction of power from only going to 1 wheel. AWD is good for city driving and preferable to 2 wheel drive in the majority of use cases aside from economy(more parts, more parasitic losses, more component ware).
