Meijer did not acquire the Ohio and Latonia, Ky Twin Fair stores, as well as a Cincinnati distribution center until May of 1981. They converted them to Meijer Square stores, except for the Newark, OH store which became a Meijer Thrifty Acres store, the only store in the acquisition that had both general merchandise and foods. Hens and Kelly was never associated with Meijer; I believe that was a chain Twin Fair acquired somewhere in Buffalo prior to the sell off of the Ohio area to Meijer. It may have been the cause of their ultimate demise; I didn't know much about them. Additionally, Twin Fair had a few stores in Florida as well that were sold off or closed in 1978 or 1979. By 1980, Twin Fair was losing money quickly, and strapped for cash, took the unprecedented move of having a 10% off everything sale right before Christmas of 1980. It wasn't enough, so they looked for a buyer of the Ohio operation in the spring of 1981, and had Meijer not come thru, would have liquidated, at least in Ohio, later that summer. I worked for the company at a number of the stores during the late '70's, and was part of the Meijer acquisition, and remained with Meijer for quite a long time afterward.
