    You were extremely gentle about it. I resigned after 3 years! I'm done, the system is broken! There's no discipline for the children nor consequences. It's all about the money and the numbers. That's why I quit my previous position in sales! I could go on for an hour talking about what is wrong. I loved the kids and they loved me. I miss them terribly. From the state to the county to the district office to the admin of the school, it all needs to be taken down and reconstructed. Nobody deserves to work in those conditions after the time, money, and effort that is put in to become a professional.

    Agreed. I'm a 5th year teacher and having to decide if I want to continue I work at a school where students come from families with trauma or lack of attention and have social emotional issues. And there are days where I can't teach because I'm breaking up fights, or teaching social skills, or dealing with emotions.

    The first year in the classroom is always a challenging one, and it is true that many teachers experience secondary trauma. I hope that many school districts and education departments will take the time to develop resources and support systems to help all teachers when dealing with secondary trauma. Give yourself grace and time to grow. If you are able to be a substitute teacher, then that will give you the opportunity to find which schools may be a better fit for you. This also gives you the chance to obtain new ideas for setting up a classroom in the future, and you have the opportunity to speak with other teachers about how things function at their schools. You have a good heart, and I know that you will grow with experience and time. I am sending you a hug. Tale care.

    As teachers we need to be speaking up about the impact of our jobs on our physical and mental health. Way to prioritize yourself and do what was right for you. It is a tough time to be a teacher. I'm in my eighth year and debate every day if I'm returning or not. There is no shame in standing up for yourself.

    I would recommend substituting. I took time off between my third and forth year and subbed. It allowed me to practice and refine my classroom management strategies and vet different grades and schools - find my niche. When ready, first sub, then decide on going back to teaching. Best of luck.

    Yeah, I got asked by the charter school that I worked at to not return next year. I got my principal to do it on purpose when I essentially had enough of the nonsense she and other leadership members were saying to me; so I openly opposed her just not caring anymore, and she got the message. During next-year placements, said to me to not come back and I told her I agreed with her decision.

    Just saw your video. So sad that your experience is hard. After 28 years I can tell you that the number one problem we deal with is pouring so much personal emotion into your professional life. It is VITAL that you have proper work life balance. Children are much more resilient than adults. You nay not be able to fix their home lives, but you could make their school day as positive and productive as possible. Take time to regroup and figure out if this is right for you. Best of luck.

    Thank you for your honesty. I know exactly what you are talking about and I also just recently resigned from teaching after more than 5 years of being a primary school teacher. Hardest decision of my life but I chose peace of mind. Now I'm facing new challenges, mostly financial but I hope to overcome this in time. I wish that this issue could be dealt with globally. It's time for teachers to speak up. Our mental health is suffering due to the environments, spaces and people we are subjected to. Honestly, it's a tough job. And if you're reading this as a teacher in a good space, I commend you.

    I retired with 39 years in education. In my system we having been working on giving student teachers more real experiences. I come from a very large system. Student teachers are sent to you type of schools for part of their learning . It gives you a better idea of what is out there. You are given the tools to show you how to deal with situations. Sadly new teachers are thrown to the wolves and not given the support. Don’t give up you can find a better fit for you.

    As a parent, I think Covid...the shutdown from school, work, and everyday activities as heightened everyone's mental health and how we function in life. I know kids especially have been struggling with the demands of going back to school and how to manage everything has caused them to have breakdowns and needed more support. My daughter was happy before Covid and now she has social anxiety and needs the extra support.

    My last school year was so very psychologically traumatizing and physically draining for me. My physical health was negatively affected as well. The things those kids were going through at home spilled over to school and it was too much. I was more of a referee and counselor than a teacher. Most days were spent putting out fires. I was there one year and left. Im in year seven and thinking about what I can do different in education. Im tired.

      I hear you! I pretty much lived out your first year of teaching for six and a half years as a high school Spanish teacher to students who are barely literate in English. I have undergraduate degrees in Spanish and Latin American Studies in addition to a master's in Spanish. The only thing that saved me and is keeping me in the field is having switched to ESL/ ELL (English as a Second Language/ English Language Learners) and to the 5th grade. My current school has a student body count of 800 and 90% of them are Hispanic while 50% of them make up our ELL population. I think that the fact that many of them and their families were born and raised outside of the US is a huge reason as to why I am so less stressed. Most (if not all) of them hold traditional family values such as teaching their children to be respectful and the value of hard work. The fact that they're only 10 and 11 is also a huge help. Their little brains would never spew some of the horrible and disrespectful things that high schoolers do all the time. They're not at a point where they think that being disrespectful makes them cool or popular nor do they carry as much anger and bitterness toward life and authority figures like high schoolers.

    I am so sorry this happened to you as a first year teacher! I am surprised that your district would place a first year teacher into this kind of school environment which needs veteran teachers with extra training for dealing with students with trauma. I hope you can find a much better fit in the future or do one on one tutoring where you determine your clients and schedule. Most of all, I am glad you are looking after you first and allowing yourself to recover from this experience before deciding what's next. I've have been worried about you since you were not posting and praying for you. I have a son in law who deals with anxiety and depression and I have seen his challenges even when things are stable. So I have some understanding of how difficult this has been for you on multiple levels. I will look forward to future vlogs on how you are doing. Thank you for being so transparent with us all!

    After teaching in the ghetto for four years I grew disgusted and started shipping out with the merchant marine, being ex navy which entitled me to a mariner’s document which I got upgraded to Able Seaman by taking a cram course at a maritime academy. Then when I grew weary of living at work after eight years I enrolled in barber college. So I finished my work career barbering for twenty years. I would get school teachers as customers who were variously considering career changes such as driving automated garbage trucks, so disgusted were they with teaching. Then I’d get people who were contemplating going into teaching. What I would tell the teacher candidates was essentially don’t go into a field where you’re expected to force the kids to read. So in other words I’d only endorse physical education, art or music education, or industrial education. I would further admonish them to forget about teaching if all they could get was a position in a giant urban school district. And then also I would caution them against teaching in the suburbs, where there are massive infestations of helicopter parents to fend off. So what does that leave? Basically maybe coaching football or teaching shop, art or music in a rural area where the parents are more likely to be fairly indifferent to their kids’ educations. If this approach strikes you as being cynical then all that I can say in response is thank you, I’m flattered. After all, there’s nothing worse than being a sucker. And as PT Barnum observed there’s a sucker born every minute. And never forget that the world as it is presently constituted never gives a sucker an even break.

      I taught for 2 years in ghetto schools, kids were beyond disrespectful. I tried my best to be drill sergeant and was told I was too aggressive., later not strict enough, later too angry. I have no clue what admin wants. I've somehow have survived 7 years teaching, in somewhat better schools. Not sure how much longer I'll go. I wish I was young enough to join the Navy, but I'll gladly do a blue collar job if needed.

    • @marcmeinzer8859
      @marcmeinzer8859 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mario10zeus The navy has a fairly high age cut off for enlistments or certainly up into the mid thirties at the very least or possibly up to 40 perhaps. Or you can join the Seafarers’ Union using the acronym SIU of Camp Spring’s, Maryland where you can look up their apprentice program online. Especially if you would be willing to be trained as a cook they might really like you. Merchant ships tend to be quite large and crewed by typically only 20 crew so everybody gets their own sleeping cabin with its own head and shower typically. They also get at least four months vacation each year but in order to keep your hospitalization active it’s set up so that you’ve got to ship out at least twice each year. If you don’t want to cook the other two departments are deck and engine room. They get you federally certified to ship out as a civilian mariner.

    YEP, SAME HERE. UNFORTUNATELY, YOU ARE A TEACHER AT A TIME WHEN FAMILIES ARE FOR THE MOST PART BROKEN AND THE ONE SINGLE PARENT IN CHARGE CAN NOT RAISE A CHILD CAUSE THEY ARE AT WORK ALL DAY LONG. NOT ONLY THAT BUT MANY DON'T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT THEIR KIDS BEHAVIOR OR FUTURE. THEREFORE,TEACHERS ARE STUCK WITH KIDS THAT ARE OBLIVIOUS TO EMPATHY, THEIR FUTURE AND ANY MORAL COMPASS. THE TRICK THAT WORKED FOR ME WAS TO NOT TAKE THINGS PERSONALLY. I DID NOT WORK AT HOME AS MUCH AS I COULD, AND I SIMPLY TAUGHT THE LESSON FOR 15 MINUTES, GAVE THEM THEIR WORK AND WHOEVER DID IT FINE, THOSE THAT DIDN'T...OH WELL. YOU CAN'T FORCE THEM...THEY ARE GONNA HAVE TO LEARN LIFE THE HARD WAY.

In your opinion, what do you think is the factor that contributes the most to the problem of student misbehavior?
