    My credentials: I'm 54 yo, and I caught my first Trout before I was old enough to remember-let's just say over 40 years of experience. I've caught Trout on everything from Velveeta cheese to dry flies, including Brown, Rainbow and Brook as well as Juvenile Atlantic Salmon. My 10 essentials differ a bit from yours, but here goes:
    1. A landing net. A good net can actually help more C&R Trout survive as they don't need to be fought near as long before being released.
    2. Forceps. These just make it so much easier and less traumatic to remove hooks.
    3. Line nippers.
    4. A quality pair of wading shoes. Forget felt soles as they can spread invasive pests like "Diddimo"-AKA Rock Snot. Good wading shoes will keep you from slipping on slick surfaces or from stubbing your toe on unseen big rocks.
    5. A multi-tool such as a Leatherman. The pliers work better than forceps for crimping split shot, and the knife is handy for any cutting you may need to do. Not sure what to do with Philips screwdriver, though.
    6. Wading staff. I've never used one, but I can see how it can expand my access to some places. It's on my wish list.
    7. A light weight vest. If your vest is too hot, then it's too heavy. I prefer a vest over the sling pack simply because everything I need is accessible without having to rearrange. Plus, on warm days, I can dip the entire vest in the creek and benefit from evaporative cooling.
    8. Polarized sunglasses. The glasses come in handy if you miss a strike and the hook comes flying towards your eyes. Polarization blocks the glare and lets one see into the water.
    9. A hat. It helps keep the Sun off your head. It can also be dunked for more of that evaporative cooling.
    10. A buddy. OK, not really needed, but it's always nice to have a friend or SO that enjoys going with. Plus, if you stumble or fall, they might be able to pull you out.

      They don’t make it anymore, but they still have a few sling packs. I’m sure they are just as good if not better.

      I've been trout fishing since 72' and if you are fly fishing, you need a leader straightener among items already listed. A piece of rubber inner tube will do, but you can buy them as well. Pinch the leader between the rubber and pull it through until it is straight. This will help control the leader and cast more accurately. You could do a show on leaders

    Excellent. How bout emergency flotation? Yes, I know, how often will that be needed? The M16 is an excellent choice. If you don't need it, it's just a fanny pack.

    If you drill a champagne cork and glue it to the end of your wading staff will make a big improvement as will hold on rocks even with weight, pressure.

    Nice Man!!! I need some more stream thermometers... I seem to go through a few a year (break or lose them). I'll use your link! Love that you're making trout lures with single hooks too man! Best of luck this season and with your channel! At one point we thought we were going to make it up to Maine this summer but our plans got cancelled. I was going to reach out to see if we could fish together when up there (do a collab) or to pick your brain a bit. Didn't work out this year but maybe sometime in the future. If you ever make to to NY or VT let me know.

    Being new to sport, kindly guide should I start fly fishing or euro nymphing which I developed interest after reading initially george daniel book. Kindly suggest good rod and reel options for both set ups and some good fly fishing book like george daniel on euro nymphing.thanks

    • @mainetroutwhisperer
      @mainetroutwhisperer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you’re just starting I would start with a traditional fly rod. Personally I’ve tried euro nymphing and it can be fun but it’s not as practical as you’d think. Much easier to cover more water with a traditional set up, easier to set up and figure out. You have to basically be right on top of them with a euro rod
