  • Shout out to Tristan for letting me borrow his Canon EOS RP for this shoot and also filming the video on my Nikon Z6ii. Shout out to Nikon USA for loaning me the Nikon Z5 to make content with. I don't work for Nikon nor was I paid to say anything good or bad about the camera. The thoughts and biases are my own!

      I got the Z5 last year and it is awesome to use and well feels like a Nikon in my hand which is good as I am very partially sighted. I sold my 7100 and lenses this year and put the money towards a barely used Z6 which is just great as well

    I would say the Z5 for a few reasons... first being that it's sensor is based on one of NIkon's best selling mid-range FF DSLRs (the D750) and perhaps regarded as one of the better sensors of its time. Second, the Z5 has IBIS, which isn't critical but helpful in some cases especailly low-light. Lastly, the Z5 has dual card slots and USB power. Granted these two features are probably not critical for everyone's needs, they are helpful especially in a studio setting, and the dual card slots give more peace of mind over reducing the possibility of data loss. I just think that Canon (in their first round of R cameras--the R and RP) compromised too much in terms of features (like no IBIS and the R/RP were based on what appeared to be older sensor designs, yet they asked basically the same price as the competition (being the Z6 and Z7 at the time). But in all seriousness, most cameras will work for general photography, especially portraiture and landscape. where you start to see the difference is in more specific features like auto-focus speed and accuracy. But regardless, you should be able to get good images from either camera, as that will depend more on YOU the photographer than the camera itself. In most cases, both cameras are very capable oiptions and you can't really go wrong with either one. The Z5 on sale is just the better value at the moment.

      Your overall point, agreed. Just when you talk about sensors, I suggest to forget that. The sensor is made by a semiconductor component manufacturer to the specifications of the camera manufacturer. What you call sensor, a grid of photosites, is analog and colorblind. To get colors, the camera manufacturer places a Bayer-type filter overlay over the sensor based on their own insights in how to get the best colors. That Bayer filter is like a crossover on a 3-way loudspeaker that will have 2 crossover frequencies (wavelengths) and X dB/octave slope in filtering from the crossover frequency. Around the crossover wavelength, say between green and red, some red will be allowed to pass through the green filter and some green will pass through the red filter. Then an analog-to-digital (AD) conversion follows that is based on the camera manufacturer's algorithm. And generally, there is a fuzzy filter (aka low-pass filter or AA filter) that disperses light for photosite [x,y], to its neighbors, for each and every [x,y] photosite in the sensor. So the photosites have become single color (band). They now see either red, or green or blue light. And at the level of AD you have 14 bits gradation resolution, but for monochrome photosites. All that raw data being 14 bits monochrome then must be turned into RGB pixels. This happens in camera for JPEG/MPEG or in post when you shoot raw. In raw processing, you lose a lot of gradation from the 14 bits: the best cameras say DxO Mark give 27 bits color space (9+9+9). In this view of a camera as a system, the sensor plays a minor role. As we lose a lot in raw processing, it's also worth looking at that raw processing. For instance to see that C1 does not formally support a lot of Nikon Z system lenses. For instance the Z 85/1.8S is not on their support list. With Lr, I suffered from color noise in Z 7 shots (mid summer, mid day, no shortage of photons) and after comparison with other raw processing apps, I concluded I was looking at raw processing artifacts: when we recognize them, we call them Moiré when we do not recognize them we call the noise. With the Nikon Z system, I run a raw shot through (free) Nikon NX Studio when in doubt as it does an excellent job. Which is also to say that comparing two cameras in C1 or Lr informs about how these apps do the raw processing - the question remains how legitimate a judgment over differences between cameras is.

  • @stanspb763
    @stanspb763 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Nice to see the entry level FF getting some love. The Canon camera have good performance but the R series were designed to compete with Sony by cheapening the build quality to Sony's level which is not so bad at entry level but in the higher end cameras, the lower material quality and lack of weather sealing seem like a downgrade. The Z bodies all have excellent IBIS so handheld shooting in low light is feasible at 3-5 stops lower shutter speed, which is a huge advantage. The SOOC images of the Z bodied really pop and one reason I shot my Z6 90% of the time and my D850 and D800 sit in backup roles.
    If someone already has RF glass the RP would be a logical choice but S glass for Z mount is better corner to corner, with zero CA, lower-priced and quieter for video. Both cameras handle better than Sony which has the worst control layout, menus and handling of any, plus less support. Both Nikon and Canon have much better support. When a Sony model of anything from TVs to cameras, goes out of production parts become very hard to get, they want to sell a new camera instead of you repairing what you already invested in. For build quality and weather sealing in FF, it is pretty obvious Nikon and Panasonic S series are best but the Panasonics are heavy and more expensive.
    I shot Canon for 20 years and loved my A1 film camera but when going digital Nikon was the clear winner when the D90 came out with far better dynamic range and handling and I have shifted over to all Nikon with a D90 which is still a competent camera, 13 years later. Then added the D7000, and when the D800 I was one of the first go get one and its extraordinary dynamic range left every other camera in the dust and 36mpx. Since then most brands have gotten close to the DR that only Nikon had for 8 years. To get good high ISO DR most brands except Nikon resorts to what Pentax resorted to: high ISO non-defeatable noise reduction in RAW so detail is lost in lower light.
    But, as always the great images come from the lighting, concept, photographer and model so any camera is capable of great or horrible images. A good model is more important than a good camera. A creatively lit scene is more impactful of the final result than the format of the camera from Dx to large Format. Most of my work now is with actors, assignments for casting directors and cinema studios so working with actors who are camera aware and where makeup artists know when different color temperature light does to makeup so I am lucky in that regard. Both stills and videos are required now and my Z6 is a breeze to do scenes that are consistent. The AF tracking is amazing on the Z6 for video, with silent S lenses, it just follows the actor all over the scene without fail every time. I am a relative newcomer to video but the results have been good. I have been shooting film and then digital since 1959 and my candid monochrome shots were taken at breaks in my recording studio were featured on many album covers. At that time photography was a hobby and I had a large successful recording studio that created 197 gold and platinum albums in its 3 studios and my photos were used on dozens of albums, from Fleetwood Mac Rumours to Whitney Houston, Metallica to Stevie Wonder, Journey, Heart, Aretha Franklin, Santana, Tower of Power and many more, just candid snapshots that captured the tone of the sessions.

    Don't kid yourself, entry level does not mean substandard. The Z5 has the D750 sensor and I think I prefer it to BSI sensors. That being said, the RP looked real strong, color and contrast were killing it while the Nikon (to me) looked just a little hot post Capture one.

    I shoot in both systems and always felt the Nikon colors were a bit warmer and nicer and the Canon a bit flat and bland. Last night l took a Z6 and a R6 and took 6 shots with each in the fading light. all settings identical, put in lightroom and gave a few tweaks and was satisfied the Nikon colors just a bit warmer and nicer, till l realized they were actually the Canon files. So being a little biased toward the Nikon system l must now admit it was only my bias that had the Nikon colors better.

    Hi Photomeike - I like your videos and general approach to shooting - been subscribed for a while - we shoot similar subject matter - fashion/portrait and event etc.
    The images from both cameras honestly looked great and its definitely the 4 inches behind the camera that matter then most as you mentioned.
    I'm too am a Nikon guy (currently shooting the Z6II) and have been since the late 80's so there is some bias in my opinion. That said, the Z5 is clearly the better buy in this space of the market - its far superior having decent IBIS (the RP has none), 2 card slots (the RP has 1), a better EVF and better battery life (these speak for themselves).
    Furthermore, the Z lenses S line (1.8 category) although more expensive are also technically superior lenses to the lower end Canon's the 1.8's and f/2's. Take the Nikon 50mm 1.8 S compared to the 50mm 1.8 RF - the RF lens is good - but the Nikon lens is magnificent - the Nikon lens might be the best 50mm 1.8 ever made sub $1,500 - and it currently goes for $499 - it has IQ that rivals Zeiss lenses that are $2000+ - it is sharper corner to corner than the RF lens. Also, unlike the RF lens the Nikon has almost no focus breathing - the Canon lens focus breathes quite a bit so - yes while the RF lens is cheaper - it is inferior in every respect.
    Still, all that said, the RF lens is quite good and it is significantly cheaper (a couple hundred dollars) - so again it all depends on what one is looking for, and use case.
    Also, I mentioned above that the Nikon is the obvious winner as to which is the "better" camera and that is true right now, but it should also be pointed out that the Canon RP is 2 years older than the Nikon and due for a refresh - assuming they refresh these camera (Canon R and RP - not sure if they were just meant to be glorified prototypes for the far superior R5 and R6 cameras - don't know). But, assuming that Canon would refresh this camera, then it would likely be as good and perhaps better than the Z5 at that point. Then there are those that say Nikon will refresh the Z5 in 2022 and thus the cycle will continue - bringing us back to the original statement - it's really the photographer not the camera that matters.
    Still, really cool video - nice to see a side by side shooting experience with both camera systems.
    Check me out @baronsilverton - if you're ever in LA hit me up and we'll shoot :)

    Thanks for this IKE! tried RP and R5 + RF lenes and files from Z + Z lenses are much cristal clear, sharper, with non CA issues on backlit situations. On landscapes and most types of styles I preffer first Z, then SOny a7RIV and on files. Z and E are really innovating optics, and RF still have same issues from EF as they are mostly using same glass tech. Also I don't care about IBIS, weather sealing & dual card slot. Nikon has many S-Line lenses for Z-mount & still don't have cheap lenses, it's very sad for me as entry-level FF photographer :( I know that there's some rumours about new cheap Nikon lenses, but Canon already selling it.

I shoot dark skin subjects outdoors and the highlights blow out too easily. For the price of both, you are better off getting a used Nikon z6.

    Thank you for the video. Do you think it’s worth considering buying a used Sigma 35mm ART 1.4? Will it have a better image? The price is equal to the new RF 35mm 1.8. So I wondered if it was worth using it for work and photo shoots?

    • @avsthomas
      @avsthomas 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Sigma has a little bit more Bokeh. But it is heavier and more with the Adapter. It has a larger Minimum Focus Distance. It has no Stabiliser, which can important when your Camera has not too. This are the Reasons, why i go with the Canon. It is much more Versatile for me.

    good comparison, I shoot Nikon too, got mine for the good options (tracking, VR, and the eye/face detect + radio triggering (**wr-r11a/b now**- formerly the wr-r10 system)) but what would be an interesting side comparison is how you found Capture One vs. Adobe Photoshop lightroom?, does one show more of Nikon/Cannon's colours?, Dynamic range, iso/other noise, mor`e, etc. than the other?, and also which would you suggest one purchases, does it matter which camera system, ie feature compatability with tethering, lens profiles, etc.

    Looks like Canon's viewfinder is not as smooth as Nikon's, there are constant delays. Is it actually that slow? Or is it the specifics of recording an image from the viewfinder?

  • @frankluo230
    @frankluo230 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The Nikon combo retails for a lot more than Canon combo. In reality Nikon users who have all 35mm 50mm 85mm lenses are unlikely to be settled with only Z5 for long where Canon users have 35rf 85rf and 50rf more likely to keep RP for longer. Also Nikon Z6 gen I is a fantastic step up for not so much more money than Z5. Canon R in some aspects is worse than RP. RP users update to R6 more likely.

    • @frankluo230
      @frankluo230 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you put Canon RP+ 24-105L vs Nikon Z5 24-70F4 they are about the same price range. I prefer Canon combo hands down. 24-105L is head and shoulder more useful than 24-70F4, built better, feels better on the hand, IS helps RP. Z5 other kit lens 24-50 is a joke, should only be $100 kit more than body but Nikon wants $400 more.

      Between Canon's color science and insane auto focus, anyone can pick up this camera and just start shooting.

    • @lilnape2604
      @lilnape2604 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would users not be settled with Z5 having those lenses but would with RP? The RP with the 24-105L is like $500 more. I’d rather do the 24-200 kit with a the 50 1.8s if we are in the $2100 range.

    • @frankluo230
      @frankluo230 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lilnape2604 where I live, Z5+24-200 is about the same price as RP 24-105L, 50S is another $500 on top. RP body with RF35 was a combo kit Canon did a long time promo, RF50 is penny price, RF85 is slightly cheaper than 85S. The next logical step up is R6 which is $1500 more. On the Nikon side, Z5 promo is around the 24-50 or 24-200. Users spend big dollars on prime lenses would want a better body naturally, and Z6 genI was only slightly more. Better sensor, better fps, better video.

    I compared these Canon but whit the Nikon z50. For me z50 have better build quality, better in the hand. EVF has nicer colors and generally looks better through it. Even the quality and appearance of the photos somehow I liked better in the Nikon. On the kit lenses, the image is nicer and sharper in the z50. Very similar batteries. Maybe slightly better in z50 but overall no revelations in both cameras. The Nikon fared a bit better in my opinion, but I also plan to buy the RP one day as a second one. Anyway, I think they are great cameras considering the current prices. If z5 are better than Z50 so choise are clear form me.
