    Thanks Tobin, for the excellent knowledge you are sharing and helping to round out my understanding of the different models, particularly the use of "Tech" in the naming of the early models. It would have be so helpful to have this video about a year ago when I picked up a very clean Super Speed at a local antique store. I didn't know what I had, but after much digging around I found it is a No Notch with a Ranger Tech base plate (not having the crease on the safety bar next to the lather ports), which lines up with your explanation of your Ranger Tech and how Gillette used up old parts off the shelf. I love this razor and it is a super smooth shaver!

    It makes me laugh when people say that vintage Gillette adjustables aren’t agressive. But they will sit there and say that the red tip is?!
    But they don’t know that
    Blue tip = 123
    Flare tip=456
    RedTip =789
    Gillette Adjustables
    123= mild
    456= medium

    You can date a 40's Super Speed from 47-49 by the wording 'Patent. Nos. On Package.' in the head beneath the centre bar. In 1950 the wording changed to 'Patent Nos. On Pkg' in the head beneath the centre bar.
    Prior to 47 I assume they were old stock Ranger heads that Gillette had amassed prior to December '41. There must be a crossover of head types that Gillette sold in 46-47 while they introduced the new Super Speed.
    The 47 'new' Super Speed does not appear to have the notched bar for the SpeedPak dispenser.

    I had a bunch of (GOLD) 👉🏻long and short combs but decided to get rid of them all and I bought a nickel short comb in beautiful original condition. But before that I had Matt do a replating on one and it came out terrible. He doesn’t put mirror finishes on nickel plating. Because once you strip it down you’re supposed to polish the naked brass, and for some reason they don’t like to do that maybe because once we receive it we can sell it for more money. And some people probably would try to sell it as new old stock online. But yeah it had this nasty matte finish where when ran your finger over the top cap and you could actually hear it. But I hear different things from people on the FB Groups and even Matt himself told me that the only mirror finish he does is in rhodium or gold. But I have people telling me that they sent him Gillette adjustables that came out with mirror finishes so I’m not sure about that.

    A new star has arisen! Really loving your talks on Tech blade gap, this and your other videos. Intelligent analysis and an original viewpoint. I really hope your channel goes from strength to strength! There is a lot of other ground you can cover for really great content. Like, why did the English Gillette designs diverge so much from the US types? (I'm from London, live just a few miles from the old Gillette factory here) Why is the English Rockets so different in design from the Super Speeds? What is the English Flat Bottom Tech all about? Etc etc.

  • @magnoliamike
    @magnoliamike 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Years ago I really liked the flare tip, then got a 40’s style SS, then later on got a English 40’s Style Rocket. So I got rid of the other two and kept the Rocket 🚀 because they are all basically the same exact razor.
    But you can’t say the same for the holy trinity
    (FatBoy, Slim, and Black Beauty)
    Because they are all different
    The fat boy has a bigger head than the other two
    And they progressively get longer. I have the super 84 and I love it , but also have a soft spot in my heart for the slim adjustable because it was my first Gillette Adjustable. And the fat boy is iconic but I prefer the other two
    I think the Ranger tack looks better with end caps

    Dude! Thanks to this video, I was able to identify my Super Speed.
    It has all knurling on the handle, it has the notched bar, and it has no date code. It is stamped “pkg” instead of “package” unlike my 3-piece Tech that has “package” stamped on it.
    So, my Super Speed is between late ‘47 to ‘50, right?
    Is it true that the Techs stamped “package” are older than the ones stamped “pkg”?

    • @Tobins_throwbacks
      @Tobins_throwbacks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome I'm so glad it helps so yes you're correct about your super speed and when it comes to a Gillette Tech I need to double check to be absolutely 100% sure but if I recall correctly the earliest text didn't have anything about the package on them and they only mentioned where they were made. Then the next step they added r e g Pat u.s I believe or something like that I'd have to double check. You're talking about three piece text right having the package on there or are you talking about the one piece Techs having the package written on them?

    Is a base plate with scalloped design still a straight bar? Samewise, can a base plate with scalloped design still be called, "Gillette Tech" (as long as made by Gillette)?

    • @Tobins_throwbacks
      @Tobins_throwbacks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For modern razors, absolutely a scallop in my open is still a straight bar. Off hand, and maybe I'm drawing a blank, I can't think of any scallop Vintage Gillettes. Let me think on it, I'm on my lunch break at work but if something jumps at me I'll send ya another message. Have a good one!

    • @10floz30minutes
      @10floz30minutes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Tobins_throwbacks Good suggestion your saying "modern". If Gillette created the modern scalloped kind of bar, then Gillette would be the group who would have decided if that qualified for "Tech" in the name. I have only seen up-close two examples of Gillette Tech form of razor not made by Gillette; I have not seen/found/learned about any scalloped bar razor resembling the old Gillette Tech; so the question is open for opinion.

      @@stevenbrooks4751 there is my friend, don't judge a book by its cover, and don't think that my late response is an indication of no resources on the matter, I just have a life outside of the internet...
      Anyway, regarding our topic, you can search the internet, (badger and blade in particular) and you will see that in the '60's gillette (under nacet and minora branding) released this model of the tech in two versions (with 13 and 11 teeth) for the market of the Middle East, just because men in that part of the earth have thicker beard growth and the regular tech was not efficient enough for their whiskers. These techs were made in England, and basically we are talking about the exact same head as the standard tech, just with slots in the bar rather than teeth. Shaving wise they offer the same result as the standard, so nothing groundbreaking (at least for me). You can check for photos of NOS razors on the net and you will see that there are not branded with another model name, so I (and other enthusiasts), guess that the tech name stands for them two.😉
      And just for the history of the tech check the first prototypes which were inspired (a lot...) by Rotbart, just in case you thought that gillette was always innovative...
