    ASP PRESENTS:
USMC WW1 and WW2 Helmets "Steel Pots"
At the start of the Second World War, a variation of WW1 Kelley helmets were still used. As the war escalated, the new M1 "steel pot" helmet and liner was issued. The Marines in battle were recognized and distinguishable by the reversible frog skin camouflage helmet covers they wore.
The M1 "steel pot" helmets were of better design than the WW1 Kelley helmets. The M1 helmet offered more protection for its wearer. The M1 helmets were designed to protect the soldier or Marines' head from incoming shrapnel or debris. They were not made to be bullet proof. Helmets of the past such as the M1 helmet and those of today are not meant to be bullet proof, but only provide necessary protection to the head of its wearer.

My helmet(s), 1964-1970, were identical to WWII; they were manufactured during WWII (as was my Garand, ammo, web gear, canteen, etc. (even some of the rations - but newer rations were Korean War vintage; we didn't get "B" rations until late 1960s); the the helmet liner was a better grade than WWII I was told by my nco(s); I think my head band(s) was better grade, but maybe just because they were newer. The netting was the same. The elastic strap for "vegetation" was new and used primarily for bug juice, cigarettes, micellaneous - even band-aids. FTS!

Your USMC content is incredible! Thank you for this, helpful for the re-enacting types I'm sure but as an amateur historian, this is high quality content for me to compare details and analyze advantages/disadvantages and just plain differences. This whole series, canteens, tent shelters, is excellent. Thanks for all of it.

Best places to buy M1 steel pot helmets are at military swap meets, militaria shows, estate sales, and special websites that focuses on the sales of military surplus gear. As for an American WW2 combat helmet, there are several different variations of the M1 steel pot helmet because during the war and afterwards, changes were made to the helmet. Be patient when looking for one and don’t be disgruntled when you find a M1 steel pot that was used after WW2. Remember, the M1 steel pot was used well after WW2 up until the 1980s when it was replaced by the Kevlar PASGT helmet. I wish you luck.
