The good dinosaur “newt” is a skink, a type of lizard, also doesn’t animal crossing have an axolotl? I’ve seen hellbenders before and they looked like that salamander character.
2-headed snakes happens naturally, it wouldn't need to be an experiment. They just don't tend to survive when born in the wild. I've known of this movie, but not of the plot synopsis. I think it would need a pretty substantial focus shift in story to have been successful. I don't think the resemblance to other specific movies of the time are as damning as just sounding like very standard, very trodden ground without a special flair outside of pixar-level visuals to it to set it apart. Because that didn't do a damn thing for the experience of watching The Good Dinosaur.
Are people commenting that Newt sounded similar to Rio before seeing the rest of the vid? It seems like that's probably the reason why it got shelved :o
Just because the stories of Newt and Rio are very similar I still feel it would be possible to make them different enough that it would still be worth telling, especially with that classic Pixar storytelling and can you IMAGINE the visuals 😍😍
i have an idea for newt, a simple story of a blue footed newt who embarks on an adventure to find another blue footed newt, he has an axolotl pal who goes along with him on the adventure she would probably be a little more free spirited then him though, as he wants to stay on mission and she wants to enjoy the places they go, to create a dynamic that he will overcome to be able to enjoy life. the story would consist of finding love where you are, with adventuring across a forest and city scape, and threats from all sorts, no mating ritual or scientists.
Pixar in 1998: “Let’s release A Bug’s Life when Dreamworks released Antz a month earlier!” Pixar during Newt: “oh no blue sky released rio we can’t create this movie now”
I am surprised I didn't see this or maybe I missed it in video/comments, but the coffee pot hiding the last step of the mating ritual seems to be pretty strong for shadowing that either newt or both salamanders would die at the end of the mating ritual. Similar to how salmon die after mating. It would have been really interesting to see how that realization was solved in a Disney movie.
@@Frogboyaidan Actually octopi don't die from the egg-laying - the mother octopus stays with the eggs after laying them to guard and protect them, brushing fresh water over them and keeping them safe. Then she dies of starvation and the eggs hatch Octopi are hardcore
7:34 Fun fact, I actually saw a clip in a show about vets in Florida (I forgot the show name but all I know is that the vet in the show was located in Florida) and in one episode an owner had a pet snake who was born with two heads (it’s kinda like conjoined twins in people which is extremely rare) that is similar to the snake in the image and assuming like that snake I mentioned a minute ago it’s 100 percent functional which like the snake in that episode both heads are functional and had its own heart and some organs so basically this snake is most likely a conjoined twin snake! :)
Disney/Pixar also has a history of letting movie ideas sit for years or even decades until they're ready to be revisited and revamped. We may still see Newt one day.
This isn't the only one. In a featurette on the "Planes" dvd, Mr. Lasseter mentioned that they were actually working on a "Trains" movie. It was abandoned for Planes apparently.
If they released this movie now I don't think it would have gone very far anyways. It's a cliche and already done plot (COUGH COUGH RIO) and people would harshly criticize it as a rip off of that movie to no end. I'm also not a fan of the plot anyways. Another forced love interest story about a nerd and jock character archetype going on misadventures that lead them to the truth of whatever they got themselves into. Predictable, unoriginal, and stale at this point. Doesn't seem like they were going to do anything to spice it up either besides the eye catching art style.
You literally sound like every movie reviewer that complains about movies being too cliche or predictable because they have nothing else to criticize it for. Not saying you are like them, that’s just what you reminded me of.
I guess there's not enough info to go into it but the relation to Rio was so brief for what I think has to go deeper. They are _way_ too similar to be coincidence, and I wouldn't be surprised if this was the reason they dropped the project because the idea had been stolen and was set to be released way earlier than Newt thus Newt ended up in development hell as they tried to rework it. That's real crappy... But it is only speculation.
I would gladly trade Finding Dory or Toy Story 4 or Cars 2 or Brave in exchange for Newt and I’d gladly trade all those movies in order for Me & Shadow to finally be made I know it’s DreamWorks but I’d love to see that movie get made DreamWorks needs to make another movie because their recent films aren’t cutting it. @@evansclanspencer as someone who loves the movie (to be honest I honestly prefer it over coco, don’t get me wrong I love coco but something about Book of Life was more interesting to me than Coco) and I think the reason why I personally adore it is because I love the dynamic between Zebalba (apologies if I misspelled his name but the god who sees people as bad) and La Muerte and plus honestly gotta admit that the backgrounds used for both underworlds (particularly the land of the remembered aka the land where people who died and remembered goes to) are really gorgeous where as with Coco (in my own opinion) although I do think the land of the remembered for that film is gorgeous as well (I really do love the flower petal idea) but the problem with coco is that Disney never credited the woman that the character coco was based on which made me like it less cause of it. Sorry for the ramble but that’s my thoughts! :)
@@evansclanspencer I personally like it because I'm very nostalgic for it and used to watch it every day when I was younger, but now I like it for the dynamic between the goat guy and the candle lady, the unquie visuals, and the themes it touches on like animal abuse, forgiveness and love & hate. I was listening to the song where the main character apogizes to all the bulls his family has killed over the years because I had part of the lyrics stuck in my head and wanted to see if the song was any good, and it was. The honesty of the song, all the bits against the pointless mistreatment of animals, and the plea for forgiveness saying that "if you can forgive, love will truly live" really touched my heart. I wish we had more films with themes about forgiveness, because it's a very important part of life and if we can't forgive each other for being human and thus imperfect, how are we meant to love one another? We'd be constantly resentful and angry at the slightest wrong things. Also I know most people really love Coco and think it's great and I'm happy for them, but it just didn't click with me. If you like it, then that's great! I just don't like it as much as the majority.
@@evansclanspencer mostly I really liked it as a kid and it just felt a little cheap seeing coco. So I rose up and defended it a lot. The animation and music is great and I love the character development. I’m not gonna right another essay down here though because these two have said it well enough.
alright this is gonna sound far fetched quick backstory my grandparents used to own this small cabin up in the northern part of my state which they let us stay at every so often. the place had a huge stockpile of old disney and dreamworks movies (antz, a bug's life, etc.) on vhs. now on to the actual story i was about 7 or so, and one morning it was snowing outside. since i didn't want to go outside and freeze, i put on one of those old tapes. if i remember correctly, it was toy story. i decided to watch through the previews (yes, vhs tapes had those too, not just dvds), and i could have sworn i saw some mention of this movie. while watching this video, i had flashbacks to that tape. if i knew which year that tape is from (and i probably never will, considering my grandparents sold that cabin a few years ago) it might provide some valuable information to this whole thing
Man this just makes me sad. The animals I’m most interested in are amphibians and it would’ve been really great to see, and would maybe have inspired more appreciation for amphibians in general. I loved Rio a lot but… personally, I would rather have this
Dude I remember being so hyped for this movie as a middle schooler when you'd look on the pixar wikipedia page and that table at the bottom would show films slated for multiple years in the future!!!! I read about Up, The Bear and the Bow which turned into Brave, Toy Story 3, and of course Newt never happened. I felt like such an insider knowing anything about them though! I haven't spent like 2 seconds looking into more than that really other than the premise and that it got cancelled
I remember years ago when I was a kid I saw an advertisement for this movie only for that ad to disappear off TV and I wasn't reminded of Newt until years later when it was confirmed to have been cancelled
With all the newt references being placed on the new movies, I think the creators have been mourning or missing the Newt movie that's been in the making yet cancelled. That means it could have been an amazing movie coming out in Summer 2012/2011. It might have a tear-jerking or wholesome story about romance, with a tint of comedy in it. Experiencing the use of updated animation, colors and lightning. I think the movie would have been fresh-to-the-eyes for everyone to see.
I feel like if Rio didn’t come out and this did it would of had a sequel but I think that Rio would do better than Newt. Also I wonder who ripped off who Pixar or blue sky studios?
I stopped at 6:05, there are many times humans thought that animals went extinct, only to be "found" later. One was a stable food source for a local human population, just never recorded.
So gathering from the next scene, as the mc learns that being in a cage isn't everything, and meeting communities, the scientists get the romance bug as they search for their rare main characters and find that they were infact not rare, just hidden. The 2 newts get released & the 4 of them lived happily ever after
I feel like the art of the dozens of newts together were brook’s family when she was young, and there was a tragedy that either split her up from them, or had them all killed with brook being the last surviving female, with newt being raised in captivity since birth, but that’s only a theory that would make sense with the plot being there are only 2 left in existance
I mean, even though it sounded a lot like Rio this movie /could/ have still had potential. The newt ritual could have made it a little different, plus, the personalities could have been a bit different, the environment would have been different allowing for pixar to be able to flex their ability at bringing to life different types of landscapes and we could have had different side character's to Rio's cast. So the main plot line would have been similar, but there are a lot of movies with similar/same plots, each with it's own individual things to make it unique and interesting all the same. And maybe they could have ditched the idea of the first date not going so well and have the characters interested in one another, but not as much as the female is interested in living her own life and finding newts other than Newt. The owl could be portrayed as a necessary evil, or an antagonist out of necessity... simply a bird trying to survive in the wild, rather than just a basic villain. No need for a sympathetic backstory, just reasonable motivations and a cool character. Instead of having the two scientists get romantically involved they could just remain friends or colleagues... or the other scientist could have been switched for one of the same gender/sex to create a bit more variety between pixars romantic couples. Or maybe, after all that nonsense, the blue footed newts realise that they are actually capable of changing sexes and asexual reproduction. Granted, I'm not sure if any salamander out there is capable of either of those things, but clownfish can change sex and some lizards are capable of asexual reproduction. And instead of ending up together romantically, they could have ended up as friends... And then later on they could have wound up finding more blue footed newts - maybe in a sequel - to make this species' survival a bit more feasible.
Its plot reminds me of Rio. In fact, the only difference that I can think of between Newt and Rio is that one is using blue birds, while the other is using blue newts.
Here’s my idea for Newt: It could be interesting if the newt is a pet owned by someone who watches a lot of Godzilla movies, and eventually the newt believes that he himself is a giant lizard monster. He’s never seen the outside world, so he believes that the city is very small. To prove to the other newts in his tank that bully him that he is tougher than them, he swears to go to a city with goal of destroying it. He eventually finds a way to escape the tank, and he slithers out the window. Little does he know that his owner lives in an apartment in NYC. He spends some part of the movie being an asshole and or trying to be a tough guy, and with each confrontation he gets deeper and deeper into trouble, all while trying to find the city to destroy. At last he arrives into a model train store display and realizes that it’s not real, and by destroying this fake city he’s done nothing to prove himself. He realizes then that he’s been in the city the whole time, and that he’s actually very small. Im not sure where to go from here at the moment so I might come back to add more to this later.
I knew about Newt from a video explaining all of the times Pixar gave easter eggs to future films but I never knew the film was so similar to Rio. Also the easter egg is a "Newt Crossing" sign on Andy's door in Toy Story 3. (Btw didn't finish watching the video before the typing the comment)

Probably that 25-minute Olaf thing before "Coco".
Hgejakansjana I remember that
BRUHH I REMEMBER THAT
The good dinosaur “newt” is a skink, a type of lizard, also doesn’t animal crossing have an axolotl? I’ve seen hellbenders before and they looked like that salamander character.
I have the same type, five lined skink. Juveniles have blue tails and lose them as they age.
I remember the math teacher told the class that this movie was a upcoming Pixar movie and we were all hyped and never heard a thing since.
Because that didn't do a damn thing for the experience of watching The Good Dinosaur.
oh yes, Chernobyl snakes /j

Are people commenting that Newt sounded similar to Rio before seeing the rest of the vid? It seems like that's probably the reason why it got shelved :o

@@kingkong9892 as it’s own thing, rio is okay
@@DacStudiosEntertainment Rio is fine, but it's the same "Ice Age" sort of personality for its animal characters.
The “Rats” are shrews and the “Hellbender” from animal crossing is a axolotl
And the prehistoric newt is a blue tailed skink
Just because the stories of Newt and Rio are very similar I still feel it would be possible to make them different enough that it would still be worth telling, especially with that classic Pixar storytelling and can you IMAGINE the visuals 😍😍
Well it was just an urban myth in the first place. Inside Out which Pete Doctor thought was better was the real reason for there being no Newt.
i have an idea for newt, a simple story of a blue footed newt who embarks on an adventure to find another blue footed newt, he has an axolotl pal who goes along with him on the adventure she would probably be a little more free spirited then him though, as he wants to stay on mission and she wants to enjoy the places they go, to create a dynamic that he will overcome to be able to enjoy life. the story would consist of finding love where you are, with adventuring across a forest and city scape, and threats from all sorts, no mating ritual or scientists.
Pixar in 1998: “Let’s release A Bug’s Life when Dreamworks released Antz a month earlier!”
Pixar during Newt: “oh no blue sky released rio we can’t create this movie now”
Ah yes, Tangled. My favorite Pixar movie...
Lol I just came into the comment section to see if anyone else was bothered by that
Thank you. This was bugging me, and now I don't feel alone. 😊
FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT.
I was hoping someone else caught that too
Honestly, being princesses is the only thing that mostly separates modern Disney and Pixar, how did he get it wrong? I mean no big deal but how
I am surprised I didn't see this or maybe I missed it in video/comments, but the coffee pot hiding the last step of the mating ritual seems to be pretty strong for shadowing that either newt or both salamanders would die at the end of the mating ritual. Similar to how salmon die after mating. It would have been really interesting to see how that realization was solved in a Disney movie.
and how octopuses die after laying eggs.
@@Frogboyaidan Actually octopi don't die from the egg-laying - the mother octopus stays with the eggs after laying them to guard and protect them, brushing fresh water over them and keeping them safe. Then she dies of starvation and the eggs hatch
Octopi are hardcore
@@caitlinobrien273 yes that's what I mean. I know they don't actually die from laying eggs the female dies from starvation .
That would be pretty dark for a kids movie. I think the last picture would be something like the female responding and laying eggs.

Fun fact,
I actually saw a clip in a show about vets in Florida (I forgot the show name but all I know is that the vet in the show was located in Florida) and in one episode an owner had a pet snake who was born with two heads (it’s kinda like conjoined twins in people which is extremely rare) that is similar to the snake in the image and assuming like that snake I mentioned a minute ago it’s 100 percent functional which like the snake in that episode both heads are functional and had its own heart and some organs so basically this snake is most likely a conjoined twin snake! :)
I'm pretty sure those "rats/moles" are shrews.

Everyone says the storyline sounds like Rio, but even the characters match the description. Blue, sheltered.
Disney/Pixar also has a history of letting movie ideas sit for years or even decades until they're ready to be revisited and revamped. We may still see Newt one day.
its like "Rio" and "Rango" merged into one film

Agreed. The guy being a nerd and the girl being a jock is a very eye-rolling trope that gets more annoying the longer it persists.

Sorry for the ramble but that’s my thoughts! :)
I loved it :) but I'll respect others opinions
I’m not gonna right another essay down here though because these two have said it well enough.

quick backstory my grandparents used to own this small cabin up in the northern part of my state which they let us stay at every so often. the place had a huge stockpile of old disney and dreamworks movies (antz, a bug's life, etc.) on vhs.
now on to the actual story
i was about 7 or so, and one morning it was snowing outside. since i didn't want to go outside and freeze, i put on one of those old tapes. if i remember correctly, it was toy story. i decided to watch through the previews (yes, vhs tapes had those too, not just dvds), and i could have sworn i saw some mention of this movie. while watching this video, i had flashbacks to that tape. if i knew which year that tape is from (and i probably never will, considering my grandparents sold that cabin a few years ago) it might provide some valuable information to this whole thing

Rango and Rio were both awful
they should release newt
I remember years ago when I was a kid I saw an advertisement for this movie only for that ad to disappear off TV and I wasn't reminded of Newt until years later when it was confirmed to have been cancelled
i remember seeing a newt advertisement in the theaters that’s crazy
The 2 newts get released & the 4 of them lived happily ever after
This reminds me of the Bugs Life and Antz situation. Is actually insane of the cycle just repeated
I'm a Pixar nerd who's known of this for years. Great video though🤙🏽
Haha I love the freakin Overcooked 2 music in the background
11:00 ironic clip to be playing there.
Can you please do Larrikins (Bilby) next? I haven’t really heard anyone else talk about this canceled film.
Rio has nothing to do with Newt being cancelled. Just an urban myth.

Here’s my idea for Newt:
It could be interesting if the newt is a pet owned by someone who watches a lot of Godzilla movies, and eventually the newt believes that he himself is a giant lizard monster.
