Good to see a few old faces from days gone by. If only that great pride still existed. Nice clip, Watching at the end I see 3135 on the Trans Karoo. I was also there to see her that day. I applied for leave but was declined. Piet Steenkamp and I were booked on the shunt at Elandsfontein. Before we left shed Piet said to me "you ride your m/bike to Elandsfontein and I will drive and fire the engine". Sure enough we did that and I met him and engine in yard where we shunted for a while. At 11am Piet said "you best get going if you want to see 3135 on the Karoo" and sure enough off I went on my bike and left Piet to drive and fire the engine for the rest of the day. I got my photos and headed back to Germiston where I again met Piet and our 15F just coming back to shed. The good old days on SAR

Hi les
Thanks for this lovely footage. Could you please tell me what they pull out of the smoke stack (metal frame) and its purpose?
Many thanks
Tim
Hi Tim, that piece of equipment is used to hasten the raising of steam - it helps create a draft on the fire.
@@lespivnic thanks les. Hope you are well
