It is interesting that the COIN system has become an active game system, during a time when established powers have had more failures than victories against the insurgent forces.
It was a legendary failure and was one of those moments that you just have to shrug your shoulders and give it up to the dice gods. Funny moment though.
I had just watched your video putting the top eight coin games as of last year selecting your most excellent favorite to favorite. Colonial Twilight the truest two-player game is probably what's best for me to dabble into the coin system since I'm somewhat home bound but I have lots of experience playing both sides of games and playing fairly both sides of games I'm posting this before I even watch this vid
Rhodesia Bush War seemes to me tob e a perfect topic for COIN series. Classic counterinsuregency war with the added element of nation of Rhodesia fighting for its very existence. The whole world a stake in the outcome. So many interesting elements.
Thanks for an excellent review - really enjoying your content on TH-cam and the website. I wasn't sure about Colonial Twilight as the subject didn't initially appeal to the same level as Falling Sky or Liberty or Death, but this has certainly changed my mind as soon as it is available over here. I'll be looking forward to the written review!
I was in exactly the same boat, but Grant got it because it's a COIN, so you're kind of guaranteed at least a decent game. Turn out the Two-Player is really good. Plays very quickly with less to manage than playing a normal COIN with only two players. There's some good history in the back of the rule book. I'm still not that interested historically speaking but the game as a game stands on it's own legs regardless of the actual setting.
I wasn't going to get any of the Coin series but then I saw this war for the French Algerian war and I said right or wrong I'll go ahead and get it. It's coming in tomorrow. Don't know how soon I'll get to it...getting ready to read rules Fornovo 1495- Compass games. Already watched the video once but I'm going to watch again tonight before I turn in to see what I got myself into. impulse buying.
Good point. It is also in the other games. I like the various features the COIN games give you to keep the record keeping part to a minimum. Thanks for watching.
Maybe, sometime in the future, at least a few turns. That does require a bit of time and trying to keep it interesting would be the challenge (some heavy editing, because I'm a slow player).
Would this be considered a good place to start with COIN games? Out of all them this is the one with the theme I like the most (the other ones being Cuba Libre and Gandhi) and before buying I just wanted to know if me and a gaming partner could learn the COIN system through this game and expand from here or if we should start somewhere else to learn the system and then come back to this game?
As far as COIN goes, picking the one with the best theme is always going to be a good start. This one being strictly two player however means that the feeling of the game is quite different. You'll learn the mechanics and game systems quickly and those skills are entirely transferable to other titles. But what makes COIN great (in my eyes) is the "team" aspect. There's so much tension as you try to help each other, but not too much, and watch as your unreliable ally tosses you under the bus to retreat to safety, in turn knowing your memory is long, and unforgiving.
@@ThePlayersAid I might go ahead and go with Cuba LIbre then since the theme is still enticing and I could probably get a lot better feel for the mechanics and the system with a group before moving on to the two player game with someone who really enjoys it too, and because I know Gandhi has a major difference to some of the other COIN games
You should put together a video demonstrating the ops, limited ops, ops and special activities each player can take. More of a play though or demonstration for people new to the COIN series..
We'll definitely take a look at that, and see what we can put together. Just know that every COIN game has different sets of ops and special actions, so it'll be more game specific. That being said you could take the principles and apply them to most of the COIN games.
Don't intimidate me too much. lol. finally breaking this game out to play. second time watching your video. wish me luck. just had a game play failure with Panzer bloodbath, Kursk. Command mag. Now 3rd time watching.
Have either of you had a chance to play solo against the bot? Thoughts? I'm looking for my first "Coin" series game and this one seems like it would be easier since there is only one bot to administer. I am a solo gamer so that is my main concern.
Most difficult to easiest to learn (this is also opinion, and I haven't played Andean Abyss so I didn't list it): Fire in the Lake Pendragon Faling Skies* Liberty or Death* A Distant Plain Colonial Twilight Cuba Libre *Could be switched, they have different nuances that make them challenging in their own ways. Falling Skies has a lot of extra combat, and a full NPC barbarian faction. Liberty or Death is just strategically complex because of the size and subtlety of the game.
This is the only one st the moment. Many others have bots etc to do 3 player. But you should look at the upcoming Irregular Conflict series from GMT. There's a fee COIN adjacent titles for 2 players in the works.
I think it got good promotion as it has been on the P500 for at least 2 years now. We did a 3 part interview on the game with the designer Brian Train. I just think the topic and timeframe isn't necessarily something that people are that into. After playing the game, I want to learn more and can say that the game is really good. Thanks for watching Dave.
It's out in Europe around this week or next in the shops I believe so I 'may' get it. I have too many COIN's already, the only one 's I don't have are this one and that South American conflict one
You can never have too many COIN Games plus this is a dedicated 2 player game so it is definitely unique. I have Andean Abyss on the P500 reprint and then my COIN collection will be nearly complete once Pendragon comes out later this year.
"you never have too many COIN games" ... never have any truer words been stated. I even P500'ed the new Pendragon COIN game which is in design right now.
people are saying that Colonial Twilight is THE gateway game for the COIN system (even better than CUBA LIBRE) would you agree ? (yes there's the 2 play max element but does it feel more accessible ?).
Dave Dogge I still think Cuba Libre would be the best entry point just because of the size, it's simpler to manage just because there's fewer spaces to worry about. The government forces in Colonial Twilight also have a lot of moving parts, which might be a little harder on a new player.
I don't know that I agree that this is a Gateway game to the COIN System. There is some real hidden complexity in this game that requires a knowledge of the system. If I had to say which of the COIN Games could be a Gateway game, I would say Cuba Libre. CT is pretty complex really and needs players that have a basis in the system. In my experience, the FLN is very hard to play well and create a challenge for the Government player. If the FLN is played by a novice, the Govt will have their way with them and it wont be close. This reminds me of games like Labyrinth. That is just my opinion though, I am no expert on the COIN or any game for that matter.
Some great ones out there. I am very partial to Fields of Despair from earlier in the year but I'm also looking to try Doolittle Raid as I loved Enemy coast ahead.
Excellent discussion. Now makes me want to watch "The battle of Algiers" to get further in the mood!
It is interesting that the COIN system has become an active game system, during a time when established powers have had more failures than victories against the insurgent forces.
Loved Grant's laugh about your coup, we've all been there with legendary (bad) rolls. Looks like a fine addition to COIN!

very great review as i said in other occasions, not easy explain a game of COIN series
As always a great review. I found it after publishing the one done by myself
How about a decent playthrough of this? There still isnt one of good quality.....

Really enjoyed your video. Just sleeved the cards and I'm ready to roll. Keep up the good work.
Had a great time with this one. The two player is implemented very well
Can I ask what size sleeves you use for COIN cards?
I hate to point it out, but that base counter thing was there in the first game, to help count the cartel bases...
Good point. It is also in the other games. I like the various features the COIN games give you to keep the record keeping part to a minimum. Thanks for watching.
Can you do some playthrough videos of these GMT games? I'd love to see that if you have time. Or at least a few turns.

@@ianrobinson2130 Cuba Libre is nice because it's also very short (small map, small game etc)

The border? its the Morice Line. It was one of the most important developments of the Algerian War.
Can you rate the difficulty level of all the COIN games ? simplest to most difficult ? thanks
Most difficult to easiest to learn (this is also opinion, and I haven't played Andean Abyss so I didn't list it):
Fire in the Lake
Pendragon
Faling Skies*
Liberty or Death*
A Distant Plain
Colonial Twilight
Cuba Libre

Was this your first COIN game review?
It does seem to be the oldest available video.
Is there any other COIN games designed for 2 players? Or is this the only one?
Thank you

Great review as usual; though, the random youngster voice from off camera made me jump out of my skin. :D
This review was only 2 years ago? You both look like you're just out of college. Wow - how things can change in two years! heh :)
hello,
nice video, what is your favorite wargame from GMT this year ?
Some great ones out there. I am very partial to Fields of Despair from earlier in the year but I'm also looking to try Doolittle Raid as I loved Enemy coast ahead.
Has anyone done a game on the Malaya Insurgency War that started in 1948?
"brain melting" 😃😀
