    Just wanted to clarify something I said about AutoPilot at the 3:20 mark since it was brought up in a comment... I in no way endorse overriding the manufacturers (Tesla) safety systems. I simply stated a lot of people have found ways around it and that I didn't see much of a problem with it, if done safely. (You're simply delaying the on-screen alert). Unfortunately there will always be idiots sleeping, reading etc which is nuts as no system, including Tesla's AutoPilot is anywhere near ready to just drive completely on it's own. AutoPilot itself has multiple issues every time I use it, so I would never trust it completely and that goes for FSD (shouldn't be called that) too.
    Obviously anytime one alters the way a system is supposed to work, they increase the chance of something going wrong which could put themselves and others at risk. My comment was simply aimed at the fact that if one delays the alert, but is still paying attention, it technically doesn't increase any danger or make the car perform any different. I of course will always suggest people follow the guidance of the manufacturer for the highest safety protections for themselves and the public.
    Let's just hope Tesla turns on the eye tracking system in the rear-view camera soon for the general public. That will solve all these issues.

I do keep the official Tesla tire repair kit + sealant tucked away in case I ever need it and do have the Premier level AAA membership that allows for one 200 miles tow + two 100 mile tows per year. This is in addition to Tesla's roadside service, but that only goes 50 miles.

    We camped once in Yosemite in one of the tents and in the night the black bears roamed the camp ground. Quite funny. Except when a lady decided to go outside and challenge a bear to leave her stuff alone - also screaming did not go down so well with the bear. in the end the bear just growled a lot and then went but hm... and actually several of the bear boxes were ripped apard. Considering those were only relatively small black bears and not mighty Grizzlies, me as a European was quite amazed. Later on the Californian coast we were even incredibly lucky to spot a mountain lion 150m away, just accidentally. Impressive animal. And beautiful landscape. Hope to travel it again in the future post COVID. And then would love to do it with a TESLA (not an option back in 2008 when I was there.

      @@bryanhauer Yeah I think the bear was in the end more annoyed than angry. But it is just very dangerous precisely because the bears there are so used to humans. They are not 100% wild anymore, so that makes them more dangerous, I think. But not an expert. Yosemite was amazing. What did you name your car?
    To keep autopilot happy, I keep a hand on the wheel and give a little resistance when the car is going around a curve (works unless it's a mostly straight road) or rest my hands on top of the center of the wheel. It's nice that a Tesla can take the "sharp curves" a MachE can't handle (per the Sandy Munro video).

      @@bryanhauer I named my blue Model 3 Joy after the blue haired character in Inside Out. My son and I were brainstorming and the alternative was Moana. But I'm all for "following your bliss/joy" in life. Then I bought a shirt that said "Choose Joy".
      I subscribed to FSD for my west coast trip last month. It was really nice to have lane change on autopilot. I played with Summon once and used it for real once when I got parked in at the dog park. I wanted to use the auto park more but it is *so slow* that cars would race up behind me and scare me. I never once got the car to take an exit on navigate on autopilot. I think I just took over when it felt like it was passing the exit because I watched a Tesla Daily video of him driving on Beta and the autopilot swerved over at the last second rather than smoothly exiting. I'm not a regular user of autopilot because 1) I love driving myself and 2) it does weird things that scare me on occasion. I do use it on long drives when I need to conserve energy and there's a lower chance of it misjudging a situation.

    • @bryanhauer

    Hey Bryan, thought I’d watch your Yellowstone camping trip again since we’re heading up there next week. When I googled Bakers Hole Campgrounds, there was a news story from April 2021 about a grizzly bear attacking and killing a guy there. Yikes. Now I’m thinking I better get some bear spray…

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whoa! I hadn't heard about that, but just looked it up. That is wild! I was pretty nervous myself camping in that area as the trip just before that to Grand Teton was my first time camping in bear country. I'm just not experienced in it so was never truly relaxed (although it was still fun).
      When I got to the Bakers Hole Campground one of the park rangers came by and said hi. I asked him about keeping food in my cargo box and how seriously I needed to actually be about all that. He said... dead serious. That's why I even put the fridge in the bear box plugged into the Jackery.
      Crazy to hear that though and that it was only about 4 months prior to me going there.
      When I took a walk down by the river by myself it was eery. Again, I'm just not experienced enough to be totally relaxed and enjoy it, so for me there was a bit of anxiety. I will say, the campground was great, plenty of people around, but everyone did take the bear threat seriously. Having bear spray is a must! If you walk to the bathroom, take it with. If you go for a hike, take it with. I have two, so always have one in the front of the car and the back.
      I hope you enjoy your trip! I'd still suggest going as it's a great campground and extremely close to the West Entrance and Tesla Supercharger. Just keep a couple cans of bear spray handy. Have fun!

      @@bryanhauer that is a good tip I will definitely try connecting to Wi-Fi and manually checking.
      As for the water my trick if it’s too cold is I just boil a bit of water just to take the chill off, if it’s still cold. How do you like your electric cooler? Does it keep things as cold as a fridge?

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep have done the water boil a couple times. So far I've been lucky as most of my travel has been during the summer and weather has been nice. I'll probably be boiling quite a few pots come this fall though 😳
      Electric fridge has been great. I had to make sure I put the voltage to M (Medium) for a Tesla or after an hour or so it would put out an error and turn off if it's left on H like its factory setting. No other issues and has worked great. The one I link to on Amazon is like 95% the same model, but is slightly different from the one I got but is no longer available. Has a freezer side too, but I just tend to use both sides as a fridge. I also bought a wifi temp reader so it will alert me if the temp goes above or below the range I set. I'll probably do a quick review of it soon.

    I've read that there are EV charging stations throughout Yellowstone. Did you check any of those out while there?

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did not charge at them, but did see about a dozen of them on the PlugShare app, but don’t let that fool you… almost all of them are super slow J-1772 (7 kW) chargers which means you’d have to plug-in for hours and hours or preferably overnight to see any meaningful gain and most of them are at private lodges which aren’t always open the the public and you have to be staying there.
      There were a couple 50amp chargers at Campgrounds, but again you have to be staying there to charge.
      Best bet for a Tesla owner currently is to use the West Yellowstone Supercharger like I did.

      It was contactless which is what I usually look for. My reason being the cargo box and am afraid brushes will not know how to handle it and damage it, but probably also better for the paint of the car. I know in my 3 that I just got an update the other day, I know the camera is now active. I haven’t had a chance to test and see how it does during autopilot yet. I’m hoping it really does give longer intervals from having to touch the steering wheel because having to do it every 15-20 seconds gets really old and honestly defeats the purpose in my opinion

I currently have a Tesla Model Y with an estimated date of April 1-May 1. I got it in at the $49,900 price because I reserved it awhile ago and just had it on hold. I'm wondering what you would advise. I plan on keeping either vehicle for awhile. Do you actually spend less per year on the Tesla vs an ICE car? Also, are EVs convenient to own, in terms of charging, etc.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for watching! I've never had a Subaru before, but have heard good things. The Model Y though has been my favorite car I've ever owned. The performance is incredible, no maintenance, camp mode... it's hard to beat.
      If you're comparing the same price points, then yes it's much cheaper as most people charge from home 95% of the time which is super cheap and even Superchargers are considerably less than gas. Add in that there's virtually no maintenance cost, it's a no brainer. Plus, you got a hell of a deal at $49,900. Hell you could turn around and sell it the next day for over $60k.
      As for convenience... I'd suggest going back and watching a lot of my travel videos as I go into that quite often. I will say this...
      That 95% of the time you're charging at home, it's much more convenient than a gas car as it's full everyday when you leave. You plug it in at the end of the day just like your phone and it's ready to go in the morning which is better than gas because it's cheaper and you never have to go anywhere (gas station) to charge up.
      Now when you travel just expect to take a little bit longer (20-25 minutes vs 5-10) and if you're planning to go to a remote place like I do quite often (way out camping), you'll need to plan ahead a bit to see what Superchargers are in the area and/or what campground hookups might be near by. Also... while Tesla's Supercharger network is best in class and growing every week, the upcoming CCS adapter which should be released soon will allow Tesla's to charge at any high speed station like Electrify America (Walmart) or ChargePoint. This will greatly increase the high speed chargers in remote areas. If you're just traveling across the state for holidays etc, you'll be 100% fine. It's only when you go to remote areas for hiking, camping, fishing that it can be more of a challenge that requires planning.
      I'd say go for it! You'll love it and you've got an incredible price locked in. Hope that helps. I appreciate you watching!

    Bryan, when you take your Y through car washes, are they touch-less or with the big rollers?

    Do you have a video on how you close up the car when you go to sleep? How do you put down the back door?

      I just use the Tesla app. There’s a button in the app for the rear trunk that opens or closes it. Can’t remember what video I shows this in, but super simple. You could use the screen to do this as well, but the app is even more convenient. Hope that helps 😀

    Just curious about why the generator in the back of the car. Is it for backup? Seems like the car itself is a generator

      The car is for smaller things up to 150w like phones, tablets, laptops, but for cooking or running power hungry devices like a stove top or Air Fryer up to around 2000w the Jackery takes over. It also comes with 2x100w solar panels so I typically put it out in the sun during the day and get it up to 100% and have enough to cook breakfast, lunch and dinner if needed. Also use it to string camping lights which comes in handy. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks for watching 😀

      👍 Check out some of my other camping videos like Moab and Mt Charleston as I go over using it for cooking. I also link to all my camping gear in the description of each video if you end up interested in purchasing.
