you know a series is gonna be great when the cast just has so much fun in the set. I mean, who hasn't dreamed of being dressed like a pirate, walking the streets of medieval europe, drinking and fencing with friends and gorgeos women? AND THEY EVEN GET PAID FOR THAT! no way they won't be having fun.
I always love watching these behind the scenes clips. It really shows how much work and appreciation goes into making a tv show or movie. So much that you might not even realize or think about.
I'm glad to hear that her amazing creations for this wonderful show did not go unnoticed. Although I have been reading the criticism others have said about this specific work of hers to not be truely accurate to the 16th century. It regardless is a beautiful showcasing of fashion especially the detailed and distressed leather doublets.
Everyone has such great humour, i love this cast just as much as the characters. I hope this series gets a really long running and not cut short like most good shows!
I agree with you entirely about the show. I was captivated from the first episode. Alas this third season has already been announced as the last season. 😩
Why are people complaining about the historical inaccuracies? This is based on *Dumas*. Historical inaccuracies for the sake of drama, flair, and fun are very in keeping with the spirit of his Three Musketeers. A strict adherence to historical accuracy would have missed half the point of the whole adventure, imo. Anyway, I loved Tom Burke's story about his constant search for leather costumes.
Yes, exactly - Dumas gave Richelieu's age in 1625 as 36 in the book, when (if he'd had the means to research it, of course) he could have looked up that the cardinal was actually 40 by then. It doesn't matter, and the enjoyment of it all is the main thing
I love this series! It made me love it from the first episode even been so different than the books! When seeing a series I don't look necessarily to the accuracy of the costumes (if I want something like that I'll go and see a documentary!), but the feel of the whole! This was surprising, new and even exciting, making me want to see this new interpretation of an old story! The Three Musketeers was one of my favorites books... The musketeers become one of my favorites series!
"my costume is a herd of wilderbeast which have been slaughtered and then gutted and then draped over my body" - i laugh every time, i watch this too often
As big of a fan of historical accuracy that I am, I think these costumes are marvelous! They are expressive, and interesting. Historical accuracy is cool sometimes but it can get quite oppressive and restrictive.
Whats wrong with wearing historical accurtate costumes? 17th century clothing looks fine and works for such a setting. No need to go for the stereotypical leather biker gear that many series set in the past use.
I barely discovered this show, the costumes caught my eyes but I also question and interested on what did the actual historical musketeers wore. This very similar to the Once Upon A Time costuming.
The Musketeers of the Guard, which is the regiment Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and d'Artagnan are a part of, had a uniform of knee-high boots, knee-length tabard with a fleur de lis, and a wide brimmed hat. They probably wore a doublet with a fleur de lis stamped on it as well under the tabard. As for weapons they carried a rapier and a parrying dagger, pistols (snapback), and a musket, along with a powder horn and musket balls.
+Mihalis Benko I just pretend this is Robin Hood or King Arthur..that is, fiction in a fantasy world inspired by history and tweaked to sell to modern sensibilities.
I understand it was a creative choice to dress musketeers in leather and dark colours, but it's a pity they don't elaborate on it in the video. The iconic blue tunics with crosses were so much brighter and more beautiful, if you ask me. I just looked it up, and there are in fact contemporary sketches showing those tunics/tabards. I miss that in the show.
I’m working on a Halloween comic, where three boys go as the three musketeers. Thing is, I don’t intend for them to be thoroughly in costume; just basic stuff, like fake beards, hats, and I suppose...long coats? What would you recommend? Google images shows different Musketeers, and I don’t want to plagiarize; I want to go with what’s broad and basic about their style. Plus, so many references is like so many treats at a bakery: how are you going to choose. See what I mean?
Phoebe and director Toby Haynes said they were trying to get away from the old idea of musketeers in flouncy hats and feathers (1:12) but that's probably exactly what a Halloween costume would be. Not sure the weathered leather is readily available. Maybe some day :)
@@hermioneonice Actually I was thinking I'd have my three characters wear really long Red Cross shirts owned by a parent who works there, with belts to make them look like tunics. I'd throw in the hats and beards.
@@jakebastian6726 If they're all red, it might cause some confusion since that's the cardinal's color. But I leave the details in your capable hands :).
@@jakebastian6726 Yes, the Red Guards are his bodyguards and the main villains for the first two seasons of this series (and in the books). So maybe a white tee shirt with a small red cross would be a better choice of costume for Musketeers.
Hi, I'm looking for the other dvd extras for season 1, the "Creating Their World" featurette and "Saving Constance - Their Finest Hour". Do you have them by any chance? Thank you.
I tried uploading Saving Constance way back in the day, but got a copyright violation from BBC (most likely because it had an actual scene) and that didn't allow it to be visible. There's a chance copyright expired, but will need to track down the vid.
No, it is historically inaccurate... They didn't wear leather like this, there is no evidence of it... In reality, they looked like this: avatars.mds.yandex.net/get-zen_doc/1245815/pub_5bd02e21d6d1c400ab426080_5bd048a718f0da00a96e88d6/scale_1200
Igor leather was a very well used form of armor and do to metal armor being so heavy and making you move slow it is easy to believe in fact they did wear leather also since almost every musketeers pics we have they usually look like they are wearing leather as well
the only leather real Musketeers wore was the belt, gloves and shoes, some 17th century Musketeers did wear leather jacks over their normal wool clothing for general protection from swords, the woollen buff coat was much more popular among Musketeers, Leather jacks were preferred by Horsemen who more frequently engaged in melee. Leather won't protect you from much, Bullets will kill you no problem, Thrusts from melee weapons will be no problem, blunt impact, no problem, only slashes will be slowed down a bit meaning it might not do as much damage, but a well timed and well placed slash would get through. The original clothing of the Musketeers looked much cooler the show kind of ruined it. think of all the disadvantages of leather too, must get pretty hot, dark boring colours.
Yorkshireman well the colors in the t.v. show was really nice they had red blue brown and black and leather was one of the first forms of armor idk where you got your info from but leather is great against swords and arrows yes a bullet will go thru but just like an arrow and sword is slows the force down so it doesn't go in very deep in those days stopping it an inch or two inches can very much save your life while leather is harder to enter the body but yet cotton has been known to kill you cuz it's so hard to get out of the body with out leaving a few pieces still in there and that's how you get an infection
Why do modern designers prefer to fall into the 17th-Century-all-leather cliché, why do they assume accurate costumes won't please the modern eye? The inaccuracy is hurting my eyes
Eric G. L. PINZELLI Their attitudes don't strike me as 17th century-like either, more like good actors in a show made to appeal to modern audiences. I could be wrong though.
The people who designed the costumes really sound like decent people. But, boy, do I hate those costumes.😅 I think, it's a real blight on so much modern media, that all the costumes need to be edgy and gruffy and worn-out and everything. It's such a modern thing to think about historical people as either to poor or to badass to care about their clothes. And the result ist this uniformity of washed-out, shit-brown rags that noone would have liked to wear ...
It's obvious that the costume designer had a fetish for leather boys, and knew nothing about the clothing or styles of the period of the books that the movie was based on. Which is just ONE of the reasons that the movie sucked so badly !
this costume designer is amazing at her field. the series look is so distinct and stylish
But it is not historically accurate...
