There is a difference in artists progression, and following the fad. Ryan Leslie was fresh and different years ago because the beats and instrumentation were so clean and soothing. Themes and vocals were so great and fit perfectly and that is what gained fans. The beats are still there, but the overall sound is just like everything else. I know the passion is still there, but seriously, these lyrics and direction of these newer songs can't take more than 5 minutes to write...

I remember when the first studio sessions were basically the camera following R Les around. From the concert piano, to the synths, to shaking change in a cup and playing a mini trumpet. Going back in, doing the harmonies, vocals, etc. New studio vids are him telling other musicians what to do. And the worst part is the beats don't go nearly as hard.

And you did stuff that I never thought I would be able to do. I'm almost 20 now, and you still on the same stuff. I'm doing these types of beats in my sleep. Not bragging on myself, but it was a process. I looked up to you growing up and you were my goal. I grew and I'm still growing. But you havent... These are beats that any one could make.
