  • Today @Working Horses With Jim , We cut a little wood, and then take the draft horses on a short sleigh ride and clean off the pond.
    Music from Adobe Stock- stock.adobe.com
    Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

    Very nice Jim. It looks like a lot of effort in such cold weather.
    It always amazes me how you get the horses to respond with the most minimal of verbal commands.
    I can’t imagine you ever yelling or ranting and raving 😀

    Another super video!
    Reminded of a couple memories and Prince & Charlie. They both weighed over a ton each. Well broke, weren't worked too much. First problem at his age, harness pulled on his shoulders, lifting them on the horses. He built a snow plow out of oak 2×6's. Worked good. Probably the best road around. He didn't take the gravel to shoulder and ditch. He didn't mention until much later, but those big old boys were pulling on his arms and shoulders.
    He sold them and bought a much smaller team. He got what he wanted done, but didn't hurt him as much.

I took down a big Willow out in the yard and had a hired man that just put in a wood stove and wanted to know if he could take the Willow I cut up. I said "Sure if you take it all!." he grinned and took it all. about a week later he came back and was grimacing. and told me I took advantage of him! said the wood smelled like Urine ! I said "Really" I didn't know that!" Grin Grin. Hey! it burned didn't it!.

    As a youngster my dad use to hire out with a team.. I'm 76 now , as i remerber sitting on a side cutter all those years ago. so much fun Als my dad had a 53 ford pick-up . he had a block ice route, People would put a card in the window asking for .10- .15 or twenty -five cents of ice. My dad would chop a peice of ice. that was for a four door ice-box. He had a rubber shoulder apron, and carry it over his shoulder, with a large pair of tongs. My ob was to empty the zinc lined water tray from the bottom of the ice-box. such great memories.

    When I was in the Army down in GA, the WW2 style wooden barracks didn't have any heat. What they did have was a coal fired boiler for hot water. Three barracks made up a company and each had a boiler that had to be kept stoked while the rest of the company was out training. We received a day of training as a firekeeper and maybe once or twice we stayed back at the barracks all day to make sure the troops had hot showers when they came in from the field. Woe be the firekeeper who let the fire go out. They showed us how to bank the coal to the back so it would draft upwards and last overnight and also during the day. One firekeeper was responsible for all three barracks. It was said to be the most efficient use of the coal. Not sure if you could do that with your boiler or not.

    Sell the best and burn the rest. I thought I came up with that saying, must be I heard it somewhere. I burned a lot of basswood and popple last winter in my o w b. I split it last winter and was shocked how well it worked. Seemed to get about as much heat out of it as unsplit oak beech and maple limb wood. It was stored in woodshed and really dried out well. I cut it 32 inches.

      I have some very old sleigh bell's that belonged to my husband's great aunt. I had an Amish man reset them on new leather, years ago. The bell's are very pretty and make pretty sounds. They are heavy brass.

    I see you do up two links when you do the tugs? Is that just a safety thing if on link breaks or so it doesnt jingle around?

      Its different with every implement, but I have a certain link it has to be hitched to. And yes, the extra links are hitched in there so they are out of the way.

    Are you running hot water pipes into the house with a circulation pump ? I am heating our house with two inside stoves and they take a lot of wood, too, smaller pieces, though. I would be worried about the circulation pump in an ice storm or do you use a diesel generator for that case? I envy you for the sleigh rides, can't do that here in Missouri, hardly ever enough snow lasting long enough.
    I had to cut down on oats, too, after I had a 50 yard runaway back into the barn on the forecart a week ago, which caused me to have some bruises when I got unloaded inside the barn. Well, stuff happens.

      Yes, that's what I do. We do have a wood stove inside that we can use if we lose electricity, or if it is very cold since we have an old farmhouse that isn't completely airtight. So sorry to hear about the runaway, glad you are ok. Stuff does happen! Less feed does help them calm down a bit.

    Is there one of your team that is less sensible to the cold. Is it the reason the percheron was on duty this day.

    • @WorkingHorsesWithJim
      @WorkingHorsesWithJim  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they all do about the same in the cold

    How does the heat off of the wood burning in the . stove get to your house? Is there a water coil inside the stove and underground piping to the house?

  • @valeriehudson7276
    @valeriehudson7276 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Jim how do you use the heat from the stove for heating water and house - - it appears quite a distance from the house, or s the stove for he barn heat ???

    • @WorkingHorsesWithJim
      @WorkingHorsesWithJim  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are insulated pipes that run underground from the stove to the house and barn.
