While in the Coast Guard, Chris Costa was deployed in direct counter drug operations in South America (which are real world ops). While at AMTI he was repeatably brought in under official government contracts to train the tier one units you mentioned. Travis Haley, the other instructor on the video, is a US Force Recon Combat veteran and was in Iraq with Blackwater during 2004 (one of the most dangerous years to be there)
I actually questioned Costa on this very question because I know the original saying. Chris did intentionally change the last part to say to keep your training right to your failure point otherwise you will not progress.
@ZAC2994 -Incorrect. Chris knew what he was saying. I asked him about this prior to keeping the quote in the DVD. It refers to Professionals consistently pushing them self to their failure point and learning from it.
@cameron629569 Magpul Dynamics think a little different. It goes something like this... Amateurs train till they get it right. Experts train till they cannot get it wrong. True Professionals push their failure points and learn from their new failures, thereby continuing to climb the ladder of excellence.
Bought the entire series best 100 bucks I've ever spent. Could have pirated it.... But damn got the first carbine dvd and couldn't not support these guys. Not all training systems are easy to practice in the desert. But man I learned sooooo much that I was doing wrong.
@kazetehskylord andTriggerHappy971 please see previous comments in this thread that address this issue. Costa intended to say it as it is presented. Not as the traditional quote.
This DVD (like the previous, volume one) contains NO TATICS. It is a weapon manipulation instructional DVD. It only shows you how to use your weapon effectively, not how to run a CQB raid..
You guys at Magpul are doing excellent work, excellent products, training, giving everybody from the citizen looking for home defense to LEO'S and military something that they can take with em.
Yes, and Ret. CSM Kyle Lamb from Delta teaches you to shoot with the carbine rotated sideways and how to account for the offset of the sights when the carbine is rotated. It could induce a malfunction. Take it all for what it is worth.
" If you guys are runnin ambi safety, this is where you'll see it probably come in handy" Man, those two are legends. Wish I could train with them in the future... Respect!
JohnBellii, when & if the targets do start shooting back at least these guys are trained well. Repetition is key. When bullets do start flyin and people start dyin adrenaline takes over and it's muscle memory that counts everything else goes out the window. Kudos to MAGPUL for puttin out this video.
@40Zak If you have to go with aluminum, I have bought and currently using UTG. It's cheap (I think I paid 60), but it is comparable to pricier units. It's also HEAVY. Magpul does have a handguard out (its plastic and has slots to put rails) that seems to be nice and looks lightweight.
Actually I questioned Chris on this and he changed it intentionally to better match with his own views. Chris believes in constantly training up to the failure point (getting it wrong). Once you get it right every time it is time to push to failure again.
your vids inspire me im 16 and going to enlist into the marines as soon as i can ( year or 2 away :l ) but anyway just started shooting advanced weapon systems and have looked to alot of you vids for advice, instructions ect...thanks for your vids and keep em comin - Cory Moshier
@Magpul I got the meaning right away even before you explained it and I like the philosophy..I like how he phrases it too because it sticks in your head.
Using the BC instead of the CH runs the risk of not charging the rifle by 50%. In AOTC there is a great example of this where a shooter clears a failure, then proceeds to inserts a fresh mag and hits the BC, mounts the rifle, drops the hammer on an empty chamber only to resort to the CH. He was under the belief that all reloads are done with the bolt to the rear which wasn't the case after clearing the failure. The CH charges the rifle and clears it. Less to learn, less to forget.
@hwesta123 You could position the stock under your elbow while holding it -90 degrees to hold onto it better. It doesn't seem so hard unless your doing this on the move. I don't have a grenade or carbine I just want to know if it's possible.
that was the whole point i was trying to make, that even though having the VFG close to the magwell "works" its not going to be as EFFICIENT as having it further out towards the FSP
as long as you are learning something you didnt already know, who gives a shit how old it is or what real world experience someone has. i bought the vloume one of the tactical carbine and plan on buying the second volume. great stuff for people whose department doesnt provide the training. i plan to take a class at some point. i love it. keep em coming!
I would give anything to have a range day with Chris and Travis. If I just had the money i would take the courses. These DVDs are awesome, and if you find them, pick them up.
@7t77777 Probably because they go into a kneeling position at some point and don't want to hurt their knees to bad - you only need one really if you shoot consistently from one side., having it at the ankle is a way to let blood flow and not restrict the movement when you don't need or use it.
A question for you guys that like to put their grips as forward as possible... I like holding on the magwell because it allows my arms to be closer to my body. My reasoning is that when you tuck in your arm towards your chest and then compare it to being extended out, which one is a better position to resist whatever force being applied to the palms? My support hand can resist motion better while tucked in... what you guys think?
@IMFDB Is the feat accomplishing it or accomplishing it while keeping your crosshairs on the same place? If so, it can be accomplished, but it'd take someone highly trained to do it while keeping the gun in the exact same spot.
@HeartAE86 i feel the same way just wondering what the guys at magpul have to say about it im rocking a Rock River elite operator 2, all quality parts.....thanks for the reply.
OHH you just got pwnd by Magpul, LOL. On a serious note I can't wait for this DVD release. I recently purchased volume 1 and I'm constantly watching it. Awesome fundamentals and in my opinion the best firearms instructional video money can buy. Why don't you guys have more California classes scheduled?
@TheOnlyEliteSniper What you just said is the summarized version of "keep your finger off the trigger until you've acquired a target and and intend to fire." He was ready to fire he just hasn't acquired a target. I still think he should have delayed his trigger movement a little. I'm sure Chris and Travis would agree if they look closely.
@724tone dammit...i got sucked in to watching this again. great video...but it says 80 years combined experience does that mean its probably about 70-80 years? i'm not really sure..
@IMFDB i can see where your coming from, but rule 3 is to keep your finger off of the trigger until ready to fire right? all i can think of is 1) he kinda put his finger inside the trigger guard or 2) he was aiming at something other than down range. other than that i think he was just loading his secondary first before his primary for a drill. I'm not trying to argue with you :) i just want to really know what he did wrong so that i don't do it :)
@Magpul what are your thoughts on direct gas operation systems as opposed to piston driven systems on the ar platform? also, what is the reliability rate for the direct gas system? and what do you use to lube your rifle?....thanks!!....ss13.
Two questions. One for a barrel marked 5.56 will .223 really make that much of a difference when it comes to accuracy? I know the casting is slightly smaller so didn't know if that would cause the bullet to be a little more wild. Second. 55 grain or 62 grain. I know that the heavier 62 grain will stabilize better due to more weight but will the lighter 55 grain bullet really make a difference when it comes to point of impact and grouping?
Im guessing you have experience so will these tecniques work in real war also along wth the 'modern' AR grip(hand extended forward gripping near the front sight post) for an infantryman now and has this been tested in cqb and mid/far range?
@IMFDB Without two hands to support the carbine, the structural integrity of it wouldn't really be sound. If your saying (lets say your right handed) To be holding the rifle with your right hand, then with your left hand pull a grenade and use your right thumb while wrapped around the grip to pull the pin, then I don't think it would work out too well unless you have an iron stance. The gun is too long to be held with one hand then pulled with another to stay in the same place.
@sgtmac46 yeh i agree! they present this as a martial art training scenario with the samurai warrior on the front right? well when your sparring with your teammates and you get hit, you know you didnt do something right and then you fix it which tightens you up technically. so i totally understand what your saying. my teacher says he never wants to get his art perfect because then he would get sloppy. same way with handling guns in this video or any other training courses in any field of pracitc
How are people going to try to diss Costa? Seriously?? He's the man. Cool guy and I'd love to see any of these youtube know-it-alls to run a course against him or teach students and get your thoughts across. It's one thing to be trained or see good training. It's another to do what Costa does as an instructor to help people from all walks of life become more skilled, safe, and proficient with a particular weapon system.
I think I'm going to buy this DVD. It never occurred to me to prevent casings from hitting your partner, to tilt your rifle to the side like that. It's really obvious now
Anyone happen to know the type of pants Chris and Travis are wearing for the majority of Carbine 2? They are blue and I'm pretty sure they are North Face pants. But can't find them on their site or anywhere. Probably doesn't help that this was shot in 2009. Thanks!
does anyone know where I can get those green jackets that Chris and Travis are wearing at 2:05 and 2:06? I dont care about the patches as I'd put my own on. Is that just a green ACU top?
i actually did acknowledge that. i'm also going to be purchasing my first firearm within the year. so w/e. i don't mind that people become ace shots, i've just heard that argument used several times on firearm videos.

Chris did intentionally change the last part to say to keep your training right to your failure point otherwise you will not progress.
Actually an ACR is used by the students through out the DVD. It is in the trailer also if you look closely.
@ZAC2994 -Incorrect. Chris knew what he was saying. I asked him about this prior to keeping the quote in the DVD. It refers to Professionals consistently pushing them self to their failure point and learning from it.

Its 2019 hi 👋. So these guys are legends now. Bye 2009.
Bought the entire series best 100 bucks I've ever spent. Could have pirated it.... But damn got the first carbine dvd and couldn't not support these guys. Not all training systems are easy to practice in the desert. But man I learned sooooo much that I was doing wrong.
@23jefjef - Tactics change with equipment. In the 80s body armor was a rarity and as such low profile was preferred. This is not the case today.
Can't believe it's been 12 years ago. It's still something that stuck with me ever since.
Love these guys. One day I'll take one of their class.
I've been taking other classes to train up for their training.
Shout-out from 2023 to the OGs
This video series rekindled my love for shooting and got me into training classes
The training on the DVDs are Fundamentals NOT Tactics. Fundamentals change very slowly (usually in response to technology advancements) or not at all.
@kazetehskylord andTriggerHappy971 please see previous comments in this thread that address this issue. Costa intended to say it as it is presented. Not as the traditional quote.
You train until you find what doesn't work. Then you fix that and keep training until you find the next thing that doesn't work. Always improving.
Another great instructional DVD Magpul.
Looking forward to attending your next class out West.

Thank you guys for all of your top notch products!!! I can't wait for the new DVD and the handgun one too!!!!!
2.19
nice camera angel. Cool when they have the camera on the gun.
Can't wait to get this dvd.
Well done as always guys. Looking forward to reviewing it!
Kelly
I wish I had a range for stuff like this. Great Video!!!!
" If you guys are runnin ambi safety, this is where you'll see it probably come in handy"

one of the greatest and best dvd series ive ever seen in my life.
amateur shooting videos on my channel.
thanks magpul.
your vids inspire me im 16 and going to enlist into the marines as soon as i can ( year or 2 away :l ) but anyway just started shooting advanced weapon systems and have looked to alot of you vids for advice, instructions ect...thanks for your vids and keep em comin - Cory Moshier
Awesome! I hope we can get that NE class worked out.
I met Chris Costa at the Gun Gallery in Jax, FL yesterday he was a down to earth super nice guy..
@Magpul I got the meaning right away even before you explained it and I like the philosophy..I like how he phrases it too because it sticks in your head.
Yes! Please come to Vegas!
@Magpul thats inspiring and can actually be applied in everyday living.
i myself live my life following that credo.
i love the sound of the part at the end on the clip. Everyone shoot at the same time
Badass. I wish there was a training class like this down where I live.
Thank you, Magpul.

Brownells is doing a pre-order on these to ship next week
that was the whole point i was trying to make, that even though having the VFG close to the magwell "works" its not going to be as EFFICIENT as having it further out towards the FSP
@armydude690 Magpul has released it's own carbine through Bravo company. It was in Surefire's annual magazine a couple of months ago.
@imfdb... No the contour has a much wider lens I think it's 140-160 degrees. They SHOULDA used the the contour
as long as you are learning something you didnt already know, who gives a shit how old it is or what real world experience someone has. i bought the vloume one of the tactical carbine and plan on buying the second volume. great stuff for people whose department doesnt provide the training. i plan to take a class at some point. i love it. keep em coming!
I finally got my hands on the magpul MBUS. You've got an AR your gonna want these.
I would give anything to have a range day with Chris and Travis. If I just had the money i would take the courses. These DVDs are awesome, and if you find them, pick them up.

yup. I'm thinking about buying the DVDs, even though I use an AK.
@HiredForLife24 Well that makes sense, thanks.

just ordered mine, i enjoyed the 1rst one. Very...very informative!

@armydude690 It's an Magpul logo engraving, they don't manufacture AR lower's.
今回もすごいですね。
発売を楽しみに待ってます。
@IMFDB i can see where your coming from, but rule 3 is to keep your finger off of the trigger until ready to fire right? all i can think of is 1) he kinda put his finger inside the trigger guard or 2) he was aiming at something other than down range. other than that i think he was just loading his secondary first before his primary for a drill. i bought the first one already, will definately get this one
Why go through the extra motion of pulling the charging handle all the way back when you can just hit the ping pong?
That looks great guys !
@222Wildsau222 Looks like the Aimpoint T-1.
@HiredForLife24 Thanks ! I'd like to shot real guns a little more often though ^^
The timecode display in the lower right corner is somewhat distracting. Great video!
Looking foward to participating here
@HeadlessHellHound seems to be an aimpoint micro or whatever it's called

Well the you don't want to be in urban prone long cause you could get flanked. If you notice they don't stay in that position long.
started watching the video last night, Drake is in the class using the ACR =) Get some of that testing in. Come out already
great DVDs

this is operator as fuck man I wish I could operate on some of these operations.
Alex J you can operate any where you want just think like an operator and you can operate like an operator
Professionals train until they can't get it wrong.
Good video.
"sense"
put the VFG close to the magwell and have someone grab the bbl and lift it up, try to resist. move the VFG further out and repeat.
How are people going to try to diss Costa? Seriously?? He's the man. tad gear. ive been wanting a stealth hoodie reloaded for a while. its alot of scratch tho.
were can i get the mag holder that mounts on the side of the receiver?
@ZAC2994 he means he trains so hard that eventually he finds something he can improve even know it would seem he cant get any better.
Available for purchase when?
@724tone so that means hes been shooting for about a year?
@Magpul
and this means you can train till infinity or perfection.
a mistake in training is never a bad thing, you learn from it.
what optical are most of those guys using? The little short one.
Anyone happen to know the type of pants Chris and Travis are wearing for the majority of Carbine 2?
They are blue and I'm pretty sure they are North Face pants.
But can't find them on their site or anywhere.
Probably doesn't help that this was shot in 2009. Thanks!
@ZAC2994 I don't think I would argue with Magpul, lol.
At 2:00 , what's the point of shooting the gun in this horizontal way ?
Im not really a fan of that technique but essentially you squat and hold your rifle like this to expose less of your body over the vehicle.
What brand is that redi mag he has installed on the rifle?
Well spoken, sir.
does anyone know where I can get those green jackets that Chris and Travis are wearing at 2:05 and 2:06? I dont care about the patches as I'd put my own on. Is that just a green ACU top?
wow nice shooting
i actually did acknowledge that. i'm also going to be purchasing my first firearm within the year. so w/e. i don't mind that people become ace shots, i've just heard that argument used several times on firearm videos.
its out already, i ordered it from AIM surplus
