- My spin on an old favorite. DAD tuning with capo on the first fret (E minor).
My dulcimer is a Clemmer w/wormy chestnut top and black walnut back and sides. Check out their dulcimers at clemmerdulcimer.com ,and for the most gorgeous, best sounding bowed psalteries, visit westmaninstruments.com. All of their instruments are high quality at a price you can afford!
I wish my old dulcimer hadn't finally kicked the bucket, I miss playing that thing so bad. It has to be one of the happiest sounds in the world.
I come back to this video a few times every year. You're still one of the jammin'-est rockin'-est musicians on youtube
There are a number of dulcimer videos on TH-cam. Yours are, by far, the most musical and delightful to listen to. Thanks for your work.
This video is literally the reason why I bought and play a dulcimer. Thank you, you really changed my life.
Wow such an incredible version of this song. I am a mountain dulcimer player you reminded me of how beautiful the music is. I am going to find a capo and strings right now!
im still thinking this is awesome and its been years i keep coming back to this video ive not heard people really mastering this like you do.
gosh, this has been on my favorites list for a few years I bet. it STILL sounds hot! Love this song, and what talent. nice job guy.
The first time I ever came across the dulcimer was waaaay back in the last century... I found a sound file in Encarta 98 where this song was played (with somebody singing, too), and while I had absolutely no idea what an "Appalachian Dulcimer" was or what it looked like, I fell in love with this tune... so thanks a lot for this great video! :)
You look fairly young...YOU ABSOLUTELY ROCK. YOUR FREEKING AMAZINGKeep up the good work and thanks for posting. Your playing gives me chills
This tune reminds me very much of the old English trad song Maddy Groves. I liked this video very much.
Hello again Gretchenman! I’m revisiting this arrangement of Shady Grove. It’s still the best one I know of. I see you are also playing banjo presentlyand you’re doing well on that. God bless you and thanksfor sharing your music.
WOW!!!!! One of the best dulcimer videos I have seen in here! Great playing!
Absolutely beautiful.
I really enjoyed this --- far outshines my own version of Shady Grove. You've somehow preserved the old-style feel while injecting a little taste of many other traditions.
wow. what a gift you have! Keep playing ❤️!
Absolutely, truly beautiful! By random happenstance, I came upon this video and was blown away by the breath-taking beauty of your playing.
Beautiful playing and arrangement. Thanks for sharing.
Best playing I've seen yet!
very funky, very beautiful!
Wow, you rock dude. I took up dulcimer about 3 months ago but it is a lonely instrument here in the UK. Most people have never even heard of it. I have also been using a violin bow on it because I saw it in a really old documentary about Appalachian music and it sounded very haunting and beautiful.
Wow, thats just amazing. I love that song and you just made me
love it even more!
Somehow I missed seeing this one. Great job!! Very, very well done. Not too much of a train, you are getting better about your timing. It is great to watch you grow with your music and your talent. Love and hugs, Tish
Kid that blew my mind, it was, well mind blowing
Always love to watch and listen to you play! You're an inspiration!
Such a fantastic performance of that tune! Bravo!
I'm glad I found this instrument while studying Kentucky.
Your harmonics are awesome in this tune - keep it up dude!

awesome!!! never heard a dulcimer before but this is great!
Great job!! I loved the harmonics and the variation you put into your arrangement by playing the melody all over the dulcimer. I look forward to seeing more!
One of my fav songs. Im currently learning dulcimer and your vids are some of my fav sources of inspiration. six months! Wow. Im starting off slow and at a crawl with the noter doing drone and melody. Hopefully soon I can begin working on the chords as you do.
Great sound and great talent! Thanks for sharing!
I love this SO much! I just got my first dulcimer last week and have been playing it like crazy! Hopefully I'll get to be this good one day!
Thats one of the best playing's of Shady Grove I have seen before, great job! You had awsome use of all the strings, and great chords to. Keep strumming!

@simplefolkband
Mike Clemmer, the man who made this dulcimer (which is my main go-to dulcimer) makes the best capos! And only $20!
Mike made my Dulcimer too. I just got it last week. Having so much fun learning to play it. Not as hard as I thought....still baby steps though. Can't wait to play half as good as you. God Bless
You rock!!!
awesome , nice work
kinda addicting :P
You are awesome dude!
Sweet!
Great~!
you rock!
My first time hearing one and this is just awesome! Great playing :)
Thanks for the inspiration and by the way, Shady Grove is pretty much identical to an english folk song called 'Matty Groves' from the 1700s. Listen to Fairport Convention version and you'll see what I mean. Also, with your nice little baroque twiddle at the end, you should look at 'Greensleeves' supposedly written by King Henry VIII. Nice version that I think would go well on dulcimer is 'Greensleeves - Mozart'
Whoa!
awsome!
great! thnx.
I have debated buying a dulcimer for awhile now. Hearing and seeing you play this song has decided me :) If I can just play what you have played, I will be happy! Awesome!
By the way....I would like to know where you go the capo also :)
awesome
yeah!!!
@Akitrom
Thank you for the kind words. Others seem to love my music and I plan to keep playing music for all that want to listen! :) These videos are really relativelmy old. I want to post some more very soon to show that I have grown. It's evolving into music and not just how fast I can play (like a couple years ago). Thank you so much for listening!
Nice.
That's great. I love it. A very unique rendition while keeping the original flavor. Do I detect some Steve Seifert in your style?
You're a god on that thing man. When's the album coming out?
