Mullein is one of my faves! She is so mildly powerful for respiratory dis-eases (Spring leaf tincture), while her flowers make a wonderfully effective ear oil ('swimmer's ear', anyone?). Anyway, she is well worth the time to get to know...and, to purposefully grow. Thank you for sharing, & inspiring others to do just that! :)
I discovered Mullein 6 years ago. My 87 year old dad was dignosed with COPD. Doctor put him on all kinds of pumps, and cortisone pumps, lost his voice. My local homeopath said to use Mullein with Marshmallow extract ( yes its a plant!), got rid of the COPD in 1 month, then took Vibrunun Lantana and got rid of the Ventolin pump... dad is now 93 years old and breathing has never been better.
What an amazing story! Yes nature is amazing. There's a plant out there can heal or help just about anything. I never cease to be amazed at nature's pharmacy.
I am from a NW tribe, yes this and many many plants are till used to this day, in fact we still have people that make all sorts of medicines from native plants. It’s really very interesting. We as a people need to keep this alive.

Could you tell me what you all used or use now to get rid of Babesiosis (co-infection to Lyme) out of the cells. My daughter is so sick. It’s a parasitic infection that has affected her hormones and whole body (a lot of interstitial swelling) too!

Take it for 10-12 days then take break each time, before next course. Maybe ask a trusted doctor/nurse for advice on how to deworm. Sounds icky, but it doesn’t hurt to help by sharing info. I discovered mullein when I got really sick with mono and pneumonia, whist already recovering from Covid. I credit the plant’s tincture for keeping me alive. Legit nothing was working and I was waking up being unable to breathe and requiring assistance. The mullein allowed me to properly clear my lungs and breathe whilst I recovered.
A tincture is prepared with vodka or brandy. Health food stores used to carry mullein tinctures for ear infections but they were discontinued. Just don't use industrial alcohol, isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits. Book: "Natural Healing:. Remedies & Therapies" by Mark Evans

My Mom had told me how great and useful a plant it is, and not long afterward I noticed one growing in my yard a couple of years ago. I was glad to see it and decided to leave it alone in case I needed it's services. They have proliferated with abandon, and I now have a yard full of them! No toilet paper shortage for me! :D
They say it’s a sedative, but I never noticed so much I planted 20 acres in the year 2021. I believed it was for the purpose of saving everybody. I advertised that I had the seeds and I had never had anybody call me ever except for around four months down the road when somebody gave me a mean response about it. I put it in my coffee filter along with my coffee in the morning. I was having problems with my lungs and it fixed me… So now I grow it everywhere. It’s kind of a symbiotic friendship between plants and I you protect me and I’ll save you.😊
I have got COPD, and for years l had very high inflammation which showed in my blood test, I discover this plant 3 years ago, and my specialist was surprised with the result, I am I'm love with this plant
Omygosh! I have this growing in my yard and thought it was lamb's ear, until the plant grew to be 5 ft tall! It has the yellow blossoms at the top. It's gorgeous. ❤
you didn't mention some of the most important uses of the great mullein (there are other types of mullein, this video is about the great mullein, Verbascum thapsus). the leaves crushed and rubbed on skin alleviate itching and topical discomfort. also as they are a very deep rooted plant with a very deep taproot that is developed on the first year, which is why above ground it stays small, it is one of the best soil builders known to man. if you have compacted ground you would like to cultivate, spread seeds all over it and allow a couple of years of great mullein activity, then mow it in place and mulch the soil with the clippings in place. you now have a hugely improved soil. i have great mullein all over my orchard. you can also harvest leaves into compost tea vats to make compost for your garden. i do not buy fertilizers any more because of this wonderful plant.
So some uses very similar to Comfrey? Thats what I have been composting with, and dandelions. I am going to learn more about this plant! For medicinal uses but also for that awful soil I just cant seem to break or build up, and not much will grow. The mullein I have seen here in Ohio are purple, but other wise look the same. Mullein can be easily distinguishes from lambs ear, because it grows in a basal rosette, and lambs ears sends off runners, Mullein doesnt. Quite easy once you see the two, and identify them.
@@primesspct2 yes... it is actually better than comfrey for my area mountain NW USA. the dryer your area, the better great mullein is for that. there are many varieties of mullein. i have moth mullein as well. i am pretty sure you have great mullein in ohio... in fact it is pretty much everywhere. they often are taller than i am by late august (im 6' tall) and they are easiest to identify then as nothing else looks even remotely like them and if you find one that has spent flowers (flowers move up the growth all summer and the lower parts turn to seed) you can collect tons of seeds. i would do that very late august or in September or even later if you can. the best time is when all the flowers are gone and then you can just take the whole cane, hang it in an unheated barn, garage, or outbuilding so it can stratify then spread the seeds all over at the end of winter. mature seed pods just come off in your hands with little force. seeds germinate early spring and build their roots... on the 2nd year they will shoot up the flower stock and the cycle repeats. the plant is very rich in bio active minerals and nutrients... it will revolutionize your gardening.
Correct. Comfrey wants it wet, Mullein dry. Just use what is appropriate for your climate, or both if you have wet and dry spots. Added benefit are the differing medicinal properties.
Soil builders rock, especially when horses walk allot around. they also make great slow feeders (like sorel which is also a soil builder and a connector (like rozes) (as above as below)) since the horses need to move and look for eatable greens more :-)
Hello in France we call it a little like you "la mollène" but it is better known under the term "Le bouillon blanc (the white broth)" we use it mainly for these flowers which are an anti inflammatory for the throat friends also for "the liquor d'or"put 50 g of fresh flowers (finely chopped) in a liter of booze for 20 days. Then, filter and add 500 g of sugar. Enjoy!
My family members worked on an organic farm in the 80s and 90s so I kinda grew up on a farm. I was always introduced to very knowledgeable people over the years. I learned a lot about herbs and tinctures from them. I didn't realize what a valuable education I had as a child in these subjects.
Mullein came up in my yard as a volunteer, so I have had Mullein now for 4 years. I told my friends during the lockdowns that I had a growing stock of TP that I would be glad to share with them :) Thanks for reafirming what I have learned through experimenting with this beautiful plant.
I have been using Mullein as a tea for ,many, many, many years. Also, use it as a pain reliever for a sore muscle. Use it for mosquito bites as well. It's good for many uses.. It sends you to the bathroom as a natural relaxer also. I have shared with many, many people, grew up with it. love it. Drink my tea faithfully. They are growing in my yard abundtly every year. The seeds have made their way to the neighbors yard as well. Love this stuff.
So thanks for the info. I've used Mullien for years. It's a wonderful plant, when used properly. I used fresh leaves in a tea, for severe gallbladder attacks, and was cured of them! Several years ago, there were ponds with bellied up fish, and rumors of an apocalyptic disease debut. Turns out, it was some of those stupid people you speak of, killing hundreds of freshwater fish, just because they could. Really wished you didn't discuss that property of Mullien, because there is an endless supply of stupid people willing to try it out for themselves. You forgot to mention the seeds are a hallucinogen so hopefully now stupid people can focus on becoming their own source of entertainment, and leave the poor fish alone!

Another really good toilet paper supplement is the discarded corn cob, and if you have relatives and or friends out in the country who have access to corn cobs you should ask then to send you a bushel basket full or there about. Now, be forewarned, you absolutely cannot flush a corn cob, but it can be very effective in removing most of the new and some of the old. This all makes for a very good riddle? You know, the question - "What removes most of the new and some of the old?" I have yet to have a city slicker figure this riddle out whereas it would be wasted on most country folk.
I have mullein in my garden, it's hard to resist. About half my garden is feral plants that I've learned are "useful weeds", like mache, dandelion, white clover, bittercress, pepperweed, and poke. I've dried mullein leaves but not used them. Also put their flowers in olive oil as an earache remedy, which helped my niece who loves to swim.
As one who ends up with hosts of four-legged(usually) feral animals, your reference to feral plants made me laugh. In a great way!! Thank you. I tend to not "garden" per se but more caretake. I agree! Mullein is a great help in upper respiratory issues. A number of years ago I was dealing with bronchitis and could not sleep laying down. I smoked a few puffs before bed and I was able to sleep through the nigh in a reclining position. I also drink it as a tea but the smoking of it was so much more helpful. What a relief! I understand the American Indians would use it for dealing with emphysema.

I’ve been searching for Mullen this summer in CT. I ended up buying it for my husband. He had pneumonia and his lungs are still congested. I use the oil for my ears and my pets ears as well. Great stuff! I’m still searching.
Love mullein-leaf as a tea but systemic enzymes help me clear lung congestion, completely. I use proonezyme. They're not cheap but are amazingly effective.

I had no idea that these plants existed (Norway) until last year, when my father showed up with a few that popped up on his property. Currently beyond 2 metres/6 feet, and still growing.. amazing plants.

Oh how I hate to tell you this, but you should never harvest any plant from the side of the road. It could make you sick. The highway maintenence goes along the roadsides and sprays poison into the soil and although it may not kill some plants, they still contain it and car pollution. 20- 30 ft. back from the highway is usually OK. And where ever you saw that roadside Mullien plant, look around the area. They usually grow near by.
I've just started taken advantage of the wonderful plants that God has given to us. After watching your video I harvested my first mullein leaves and have them drying in my greenhouse.
I am subscribed, and during every episode I think to myself that regardless of topic, you are teaching anyone that sees you what normal body weight looks like, correct posture, graceful movement with strength, and finally---clear communication with enunciated English void of affectations and slang. So no matter your topic, I am left with a smile of gratitude.
This was an eye opener! I have these growing all over my property! I've never really given them much thought, other than the fact that my eldest daughter, when she was around 2, was scared of them! She's now 37 and has overcome that fear, lol! My property is at a higher elevation, considered a zone 2, and we seem to have no problem with them growing and multiplying here.
How nice to find a fellow mullein enthusiast! I live in NW PA and have loved this plant my entire adult life. No one here seems to see it or care about it. I've been an organic gardener since 1978 when I bought my first Rodale Press gardening book, and also my first of many field guides to wild edibles. I have never propagated mullein but I let it grow in my garden wherever it wants! For the most part. I have roving patches of mullein, poppies, dill, a patch of wild strawberries, and wild greens in my garden. I will start propagating it on our 11 acres, just because. Thanks and cheers!
40 years ago I went camping on the Mogollon Rim with my two little brothers. We ran out of toilet paper and "discovered" this plant worked fine. We have always called it potty paper plant.
Great information. I didn't know that the seeds needed light to germinate. I've been drying the leaves for tea for a couple years. Since it's "hairy," I strain the tea with a tea towel before drinking, so that the fibers don't irritate our throats.
Mullein leaves also have carbon in them. We use the large leaves as odor eaters in our old shoes, that way the green staining won't make any difference.
Now I'm going to have to get some seeds. This plant is AWESOME for immune system strength and more. The fact I can use it as back up TP is just a bonus. Been thinking of growing it for a while, but now, you betcha. Gonna get me some seeds and sow them!

@@shineurlightvery similar to tobacco. Dry the leaves, break into small pieces. Place in pipe or roll up herbal cigarette with the small Mullein pieces. Can be mixed with other herbs, mint/chamomile/tobacco/hemp etc Smoking Mullein will make you cough, often a productive, mucousy cough

The mullein plant just keeps getting more amazing. My husband and I have been learning all we can about it since one grew to such mighty proportions in our back yard that we had to take notice. Thanks especially for explaining how to harvest and plant the seeds.
Another fact about mullein is that it is very difficult to transplant, that's why it is best to find a location to sow the seed (that will remain undisturbed until they germinate). I have transplanted it successfully on a few occasions but only when small and the roots are not disturbed..
I transplanted a small one 5 years ago. This year it spread like a madman! I love the look of it. It’s beautiful! When I was a kid I pretended the dry stalks were swords on my adventures.

Midlands UK here, had one pop up in garden a couple of years ago and now it's popping up between the patio slabs all over the place ... for such a big plant it's pretty amazing how small a crack will serve as a home.

Back during Colonization, Quaker women used to rub mullein leaves on their cheeks to create a long lasting blush, (the hairs that make those leaves so soft are actually irritating to the skin). It was because they weren't allowed to use makeup. Hope this warning helps.

Its Lungwort. Great for breathing difficulties. You can dry it and smoke it. To help with breathing. Also the gorgeous yellow flowers are great for tea, again helping with breathing.
Isn't mullien a haircut..? Lol It was used as toilet paper in other centuries and as clouts for babies (diapers) Your lucky. My City wud send a homeowner a Weed Abatement notice in a nano second. I've wanted to use it as herb for my asthma. Your tea blend sounds tasty. Oh ya, the fish thing... I thought you were going to discuss blending it w weed. I read it can be smoked by itself to help heal lungs. I had a therapist who became a Medicine Woman. At a session day at her house I started coughing. She crumbled up some dried downy looking leaves in a ceramic bowl and set on fire then told me to waft the smoke towards my face and inhale it in. It did offer some relief. Nearly 30 yrs later I realized it was mullien. She also grew the pink cone flowers for medicine. Loved this video!
My grandmas garden has short mullein plants also. They go into flower earlier than around the yard. I figure it's the plant trying to drop seeds as close to possible in favorable conditions. While the stalks in the bone dry soil next to the barn, get extremely tall which I assume is to disperse much further away from the unfavorable area.

When I heard the words "Hiding in your backyard" I thought this video wouldn't be for me since I live in an appartment with a terrace, though I kept watching... and well after seeing the full grown plant I was like "Wait a second.. thats the strange plant growing on my terrace!" I wondered what it was since recently it started blooming flowers, it's rather pretty.
That's such great news! I live up by Yosemite and there's lots of Mullein up here. I am moving back down to my house in the Redwoods this summer, and now I know I'm going to be taking a few of the Mullien with me. (There's one a few hundred yards from where I'm living that is Really tall. Way over my head!)
I grow this for respiratory tea. When I wet it and rub the fuzzy leaves to clean it the fuzzy stuff comes off like little balls of lent. I keep hearing it’s good for TP but I don’t think that would be very comfortable. I have tried it like a sponge to wipe a countertop. Works pretty good for a leaf. I heard Lamb ear works good but haven’t tried it.

He's doing a few videos on a plant called Blue Spur flower which is like Mullein but it grows in much warmer climates, both can be used as toilet paper
Mullein likes our garden in Dana Point, California! We purchased a seedling online and planted it. It grew very tall (5') and it lived around 2 years.....Since then the seasons afterwards it has been sprouting every where in our garden and compost pile. I share with neighbors and everyone loves it.....Thanks for the info on growing your own toilet paper!

I found this plant fully flowered out in a dried up creek bed took it home and been growing them every year. No one else around has one, but all love the flower
Great video! When we were kids and found mullein on our Sunday walks, our father called it Indian tobacco. In 2020, a friend introduced me to mullein in 2020 for its respiratory effects, and I picked the flowers to infuse in olive oil for an ear ache remedy.
I live in the state of New Mexico, we own property in the mountains where mullin grows abundant on the sides of the road. I did know that it was a useful weed but not aware of its particular usefulness. Thank you for this information.
This plant grows wild in Missouri. Brought one home from a hike years ago and planted it. Gave me giant 5ft tall wonders for about 3 years, then died out. I thought it would keep reseeding itself, and didn't bother to collect the seeds. I won't make that mistake again. I thought it would be like my wayward datura that refused to be eradicated.

Mullein is so easy to grow because it doesn't need fertilizing - it loves disturbed dirt, wastelands where little else will grow, like along the steep sides of dirt roads. It isn't picky about soil and is drought tolerant even in high desert Taos, NM. It has other medicinal uses too, besides respiratory support. Hadn't considered it for toilet paper, though. I'd certainly apologize to the plant each time before ripping leaves off it just to wipe my tookus. They're reasonably sentient. Beautiful plant in bloom, too, yellow flowers along at least a foot or two of stalk at the top (when they get full size).
Back in June of 2021 I had noticed a plant that I hadn’t seen before about 3 feet high growing in my back yard. The stalk was only about 4 inches. Had no idea how it got there. Maybe a bird dropped a seed or maybe it had been laying dormant for years. Well a little over a month later it was over 8ft tall!! Large stalk in the middle and multiple stalks all around it! With those beautiful yellow flowers. Beautiful!!!
The plant is called Königskerze in my country this means Kings Candle in English, and my grandmother used to make a oil with the blossoms. She used this to treat burn injuries.☺
I used to have these in my garden. They grew to between 2 and 2,5 meters high. By now I believe I habe managed to get rid of all of them as I only saw them as a big weed. I had no idea they could have some good uses.

I made a new herbaceous border in my garden with a couple of trailer loads of topsoil in spring 2021. Last year I had three gigantic mullein plants growing at the back from " weeds" I left to overwinter not being sure what they were. They were like extra big foxgloves in the first autumn. Got them identified when they flowered . The stems were very tough all the following winter 2022/23.

I’m in northwest Florida growing zone 8b. I’m going to look for some seeds and cold stratify them this year in my refrigerator and plant early in the spring thank you for this video. I am trying to figure out what to plant in patches so that I don’t have to mow grass . So far I am loving longevity spinach, and comfrey. I will add this to my collection..
I’ve been transplanting the mullein growing on my property and placing them in the garden and front yard, it’s nice to never really need tissue again. And I have very tall stalks and a few pretty dwarfish ones. I look forward to seeing them complete their cycle.😊
i tried it .. its a tad tricky getting the right layering of leaves.. to prevent "finger poke ", i prefer burdock leaves... pick one fold it in 4 and Bingo.

I am from a NW tribe, yes this and many many plants are till used to this day, in fact we still have people that make all sorts of medicines from native plants. It’s really very interesting. We as a people need to keep this alive.

Could you tell me what you all used or use now to get rid of Babesiosis (co-infection to Lyme) out of the cells. My daughter is so sick. It’s a parasitic infection that has affected her hormones and whole body (a lot of interstitial swelling) too!

Take it for 10-12 days then take break each time, before next course. Maybe ask a trusted doctor/nurse for advice on how to deworm. Sounds icky, but it doesn’t hurt to help by sharing info. I discovered mullein when I got really sick with mono and pneumonia, whist already recovering from Covid. I credit the plant’s tincture for keeping me alive. Legit nothing was working and I was waking up being unable to breathe and requiring assistance. The mullein allowed me to properly clear my lungs and breathe whilst I recovered.

A tincture is prepared with vodka or brandy. Health food stores used to carry mullein tinctures for ear infections but they were discontinued. Just don't use industrial alcohol, isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits. Book: "Natural Healing:. Remedies & Therapies" by Mark Evans

My Mom had told me how great and useful a plant it is, and not long afterward I noticed one growing in my yard a couple of years ago. I was glad to see it and decided to leave it alone in case I needed it's services. They have proliferated with abandon, and I now have a yard full of them! No toilet paper shortage for me! :D

They say it’s a sedative, but I never noticed so much I planted 20 acres in the year 2021. I believed it was for the purpose of saving everybody. I advertised that I had the seeds and I had never had anybody call me ever except for around four months down the road when somebody gave me a mean response about it.
I put it in my coffee filter along with my coffee in the morning. I was having problems with my lungs and it fixed me…
So now I grow it everywhere. It’s kind of a symbiotic friendship between plants and I you protect me and I’ll save you.😊

Omygosh! I have this growing in my yard and thought it was lamb's ear, until the plant grew to be 5 ft tall! It has the yellow blossoms at the top. It's gorgeous. ❤
you didn't mention some of the most important uses of the great mullein (there are other types of mullein, this video is about the great mullein, Verbascum thapsus). the leaves crushed and rubbed on skin alleviate itching and topical discomfort. also as they are a very deep rooted plant with a very deep taproot that is developed on the first year, which is why above ground it stays small, it is one of the best soil builders known to man. if you have compacted ground you would like to cultivate, spread seeds all over it and allow a couple of years of great mullein activity, then mow it in place and mulch the soil with the clippings in place. you now have a hugely improved soil. i have great mullein all over my orchard. you can also harvest leaves into compost tea vats to make compost for your garden. i do not buy fertilizers any more because of this wonderful plant.
So some uses very similar to Comfrey? Thats what I have been composting with, and dandelions. I am going to learn more about this plant! For medicinal uses but also for that awful soil I just cant seem to break or build up, and not much will grow. The mullein I have seen here in Ohio are purple, but other wise look the same. Mullein can be easily distinguishes from lambs ear, because it grows in a basal rosette, and lambs ears sends off runners, Mullein doesnt. Quite easy once you see the two, and identify them.
@@primesspct2 yes... it is actually better than comfrey for my area mountain NW USA. the dryer your area, the better great mullein is for that. there are many varieties of mullein. i have moth mullein as well. i am pretty sure you have great mullein in ohio... in fact it is pretty much everywhere. they often are taller than i am by late august (im 6' tall) and they are easiest to identify then as nothing else looks even remotely like them and if you find one that has spent flowers (flowers move up the growth all summer and the lower parts turn to seed) you can collect tons of seeds. i would do that very late august or in September or even later if you can. the best time is when all the flowers are gone and then you can just take the whole cane, hang it in an unheated barn, garage, or outbuilding so it can stratify then spread the seeds all over at the end of winter. mature seed pods just come off in your hands with little force. seeds germinate early spring and build their roots... on the 2nd year they will shoot up the flower stock and the cycle repeats. the plant is very rich in bio active minerals and nutrients... it will revolutionize your gardening.
Correct. Comfrey wants it wet, Mullein dry. Just use what is appropriate for your climate, or both if you have wet and dry spots.
Added benefit are the differing medicinal properties.
Soil builders rock, especially when horses walk allot around. they also make great slow feeders (like sorel which is also a soil builder and a connector (like rozes) (as above as below)) since the horses need to move and look for eatable greens more :-)

Hello in France we call it a little like you "la mollène" but it is better known under the term "Le bouillon blanc (the white broth)" we use it mainly for these flowers which are an anti inflammatory for the throat friends also for "the liquor d'or"put 50 g of fresh flowers (finely chopped) in a liter of booze for 20 days. Then, filter and add 500 g of sugar. Enjoy!

My family members worked on an organic farm in the 80s and 90s so I kinda grew up on a farm. I was always introduced to very knowledgeable people over the years. I learned a lot about herbs and tinctures from them. I didn't realize what a valuable education I had as a child in these subjects.
Mullein came up in my yard as a volunteer, so I have had Mullein now for 4 years. I told my friends during the lockdowns that I had a growing stock of TP that I would be glad to share with them :) Thanks for reafirming what I have learned through experimenting with this beautiful plant.

I have been using Mullein as a tea for ,many, many, many years.
Also, use it as a pain reliever for a sore muscle. Use it for mosquito bites as well. It's good for many uses.. It sends you to the bathroom as a natural relaxer also. I have shared with many, many people, grew up with it.

Several years ago, there were ponds with bellied up fish, and rumors of an apocalyptic disease debut. Turns out, it was some of those stupid people you speak of, killing hundreds of freshwater fish, just because they could.
Really wished you didn't discuss that property of Mullien, because there is an endless supply of stupid people willing to try it out for themselves.
You forgot to mention the seeds are a hallucinogen so hopefully now stupid people can focus on becoming their own source of entertainment, and leave the poor fish alone!

Another really good toilet paper supplement is the discarded corn cob, and if you have relatives and or friends out in the country who have access to corn cobs you should ask then to send you a bushel basket full or there about. Now, be forewarned, you absolutely cannot flush a corn cob, but it can be very effective in removing most of the new and some of the old. This all makes for a very good riddle? You know, the question - "What removes most of the new and some of the old?" I have yet to have a city slicker figure this riddle out whereas it would be wasted on most country folk.

I have mullein in my garden, it's hard to resist. About half my garden is feral plants that I've learned are "useful weeds", like mache, dandelion, white clover, bittercress, pepperweed, and poke.
I've dried mullein leaves but not used them. Also put their flowers in olive oil as an earache remedy, which helped my niece who loves to swim.
As one who ends up with hosts of four-legged(usually) feral animals, your reference to feral plants made me laugh. In a great way!! Thank you. I tend to not "garden" per se but more caretake. my favorite use of mullein is in a pipe. makes a lovely smoking blend with sage, nicotiana rustica, and whatever else you like.

I agree! Mullein is a great help in upper respiratory issues. A number of years ago I was dealing with bronchitis and could not sleep laying down. I smoked a few puffs before bed and I was able to sleep through the nigh in a reclining position. I also drink it as a tea but the smoking of it was so much more helpful. What a relief! I understand the American Indians would use it for dealing with emphysema.

I’ve been searching for Mullen this summer in CT. I ended up buying it for my husband. He had pneumonia and his lungs are still congested. I use the oil for my ears and my pets ears as well. Great stuff! I’m still searching.
Love mullein-leaf as a tea but systemic enzymes help me clear lung congestion, completely. I use proonezyme. They're not cheap but are amazingly effective.

I was lucky enough to successfully transplant a 2nd year mullein (thought it was lambs ear) and it’s about 6ft. It’s stunning
I had no idea that these plants existed (Norway) until last year, when my father showed up with a few that popped up on his property. Currently beyond 2 metres/6 feet, and still growing.. amazing plants.
This stuff is literally plaguing the south end of my property, like a thick forest. Had no idea what it was and what it could be used for. Thanks for the video

Oh how I hate to tell you this, but you should never harvest any plant from the side of the road. It could make you sick. The highway maintenence goes along the roadsides and sprays poison into the soil and although it may not kill some plants, they still contain it and car pollution. 20- 30 ft. back from the highway is usually OK. And where ever you saw that roadside Mullien plant, look around the area. They usually grow near by.

This was an eye opener! I have these growing all over my property! I've never really given them much thought, other than the fact that my eldest daughter, when she was around 2, was scared of them! She's now 37 and has overcome that fear, lol! My property is at a higher elevation, considered a zone 2, and we seem to have no problem with them growing and multiplying here.

How nice to find a fellow mullein enthusiast! I live in NW PA and have loved this plant my entire adult life. No one here seems to see it or care about it. I've been an organic gardener since 1978 when I bought my first Rodale Press gardening book, and also my first of many field guides to wild edibles. I have never propagated mullein but I let it grow in my garden wherever it wants! For the most part. I have roving patches of mullein, poppies, dill, a patch of wild strawberries, and wild greens in my garden. I will start propagating it on our 11 acres, just because. Thanks and cheers!
40 years ago I went camping on the Mogollon Rim with my two little brothers. We ran out of toilet paper and "discovered" this plant worked fine. We have always called it potty paper plant.
Great information. I didn't know that the seeds needed light to germinate. I've been drying the leaves for tea for a couple years. Since it's "hairy," I strain the tea with a tea towel before drinking, so that the fibers don't irritate our throats.
i used to learn about plants and thier uses from my grandfather. Hes long gone. But I do remember him having these plants.
Mullein leaves also have carbon in them. We use the large leaves as odor eaters in our old shoes, that way the green staining won't make any difference.
Now I'm going to have to get some seeds. This plant is AWESOME for immune system strength and more. The fact I can use it as back up TP is just a bonus. Been thinking of growing it for a while, but now, you betcha. Gonna get me some seeds and sow them!

@@shineurlightvery similar to tobacco. Dry the leaves, break into small pieces. Place in pipe or roll up herbal cigarette with the small Mullein pieces. Can be mixed with other herbs, mint/chamomile/tobacco/hemp etc
Smoking Mullein will make you cough, often a productive, mucousy cough
I started my mother on a mullen tea regime, it has helped her COPD and asthma.
All these years I've called it Aerons Rod, but my sister told me I was wrong. Thanks to you, I now know I was also right. I couldn't make the word mullein stick in my head anyway. The mullein plant just keeps getting more amazing. My husband and I have been learning all we can about it since one grew to such mighty proportions in our back yard that we had to take notice. Thanks especially for explaining how to harvest and plant the seeds.
Another fact about mullein is that it is very difficult to transplant, that's why it is best to find a location to sow the seed (that will remain undisturbed until they germinate). I have transplanted it successfully on a few occasions but only when small and the roots are not disturbed..
I transplanted a small one 5 years ago. This year it spread like a madman! I love the look of it. It’s beautiful!
When I was a kid I pretended the dry stalks were swords on my adventures.
I yanked a weed, next day stab in hard dry ground. Cannot get it gone. It was not any hard to transplant!

Great mullein used to grow along the old railway line where I grew up, and we used to use it for this very purpose.

Back during Colonization, Quaker women used to rub mullein leaves on their cheeks to create a long lasting blush, (the hairs that make those leaves so soft are actually irritating to the skin). It was because they weren't allowed to use makeup. Hope this warning helps.

I had a therapist who became a Medicine Woman. At a session day at her house I started coughing. She crumbled up some dried downy looking leaves in a ceramic bowl and set on fire then told me to waft the smoke towards my face and inhale it in. It did offer some relief.
Nearly 30 yrs later I realized it was mullien. She also grew the pink cone flowers for medicine.

My grandmas garden has short mullein plants also. They go into flower earlier than around the yard. I figure it's the plant trying to drop seeds as close to possible in favorable conditions. While the stalks in the bone dry soil next to the barn, get extremely tall which I assume is to disperse much further away from the unfavorable area.

When I heard the words "Hiding in your backyard" I thought this video wouldn't be for me since I live in an appartment with a terrace, though I kept watching... and well after seeing the full grown plant I was like "Wait a second.. thats the strange plant growing on my terrace!" I wondered what it was since recently it started blooming flowers, it's rather pretty.
That's such great news! I live up by Yosemite and there's lots of Mullein up here. I am moving back down to my house in the Redwoods this summer, and now I know I'm going to be taking a few of the Mullien with me.
(There's one a few hundred yards from where I'm living that is Really tall. Way over my head!)

I grow this for respiratory tea. When I wet it and rub the fuzzy leaves to clean it the fuzzy stuff comes off like little balls of lent. I keep hearing it’s good for TP but I don’t think that would be very comfortable. I have tried it like a sponge to wipe a countertop. Works pretty good for a leaf. I heard Lamb ear works good but haven’t tried it.

Mullein likes our garden in Dana Point, California! We purchased a seedling online and planted it. It grew very tall (5') and it lived around 2 years.....Since then the seasons afterwards it has been sprouting every where in our garden and compost pile. I share with neighbors and everyone loves it.....Thanks for the info on growing your own toilet paper!

Great video! When we were kids and found mullein on our Sunday walks, our father called it Indian tobacco. In 2020, a friend introduced me to mullein in 2020 for its respiratory effects, and I picked the flowers to infuse in olive oil for an ear ache remedy.

This plant grows wild in Missouri. Brought one home from a hike years ago and planted it. Gave me giant 5ft tall wonders for about 3 years, then died out. I thought it would keep reseeding itself, and didn't bother to collect the seeds. I won't make that mistake again.
I thought it would be like my wayward datura that refused to be eradicated.

And ironically I've been on the Katy trail and really needed toilet paper!

Mullein is so easy to grow because it doesn't need fertilizing - it loves disturbed dirt, wastelands where little else will grow, like along the steep sides of dirt roads. It isn't picky about soil and is drought tolerant even in high desert Taos, NM. It has other medicinal uses too, besides respiratory support. Hadn't considered it for toilet paper, though. I'd certainly apologize to the plant each time before ripping leaves off it just to wipe my tookus. They're reasonably sentient. Beautiful plant in bloom, too, yellow flowers along at least a foot or two of stalk at the top (when they get full size).

Back in June of 2021 I had noticed a plant that I hadn’t seen before about 3 feet high growing in my back yard. The stalk was only about 4 inches. Had no idea how it got there. Maybe a bird dropped a seed or maybe it had been laying dormant for years. Well a little over a month later it was over 8ft tall!! Large stalk in the middle and multiple stalks all around it! With those beautiful yellow flowers. Beautiful!!!
The plant is called Königskerze in my country this means Kings Candle in English, and my grandmother used to make a oil with the blossoms. She used this to treat burn injuries.☺
I used to have these in my garden. They grew to between 2 and 2,5 meters high.
By now I believe I habe managed to get rid of all of them as I only saw them as a big weed.
I had no idea they could have some good uses.
I just have one of these plants flowering in my yard now. I like the look of it last year so I didn't pull it out as a weed and I'm glad I didn't. Thanks for letting me know more about it.

I made a new herbaceous border in my garden with a couple of trailer loads of topsoil in spring 2021. Last year I had three gigantic mullein plants growing at the back from " weeds" I left to overwinter not being sure what they were. They were like extra big foxgloves in the first autumn. Got them identified when they flowered . The stems were very tough all the following winter 2022/23.
Have 2 very big ones in my yard. Wife has been yelling for me to cut it down but my gut knew to keep them. Thanks for the info!

Seems like the best strategy then is having a dedicated patch of these with staggered planting times so you always have plants ready for use.
I have two of those exactly so like that one right now! I just kept it growing because it looked cool. I'm gonna keep my seeds this fall.
Also a thick dried stalk can be used to make fire, the fiber makes for good tender when used in a fire bow or by hand...
The natives lined their moccasins with it and I believe it's used to make a tea for sore throats. Grows here in nova scotia.

I’m in northwest Florida growing zone 8b. I’m going to look for some seeds and cold stratify them this year in my refrigerator and plant early in the spring thank you for this video. I am trying to figure out what to plant in patches so that I don’t have to mow grass . So far I am loving longevity spinach, and comfrey. I will add this to my collection..

I’ve been transplanting the mullein growing on my property and placing them in the garden and front yard, it’s nice to never really need tissue again. And I have very tall stalks and a few pretty dwarfish ones. I look forward to seeing them complete their cycle.😊

i tried it .. its a tad tricky getting the right layering of leaves.. to prevent "finger poke ", i prefer burdock leaves... pick one fold it in 4 and Bingo.
