I liked the second one in both design and expense. Not only that but you can also upgrade or make the second (square) one more permanent by adding red brick along the outside of it.

I like the round colour but i believe the square one is more user friendly. I have just built a keyhole one with a metal lining on the circle part. Trying to get both worlds.🙃
Hi, I have never heard of dirt being fluffy, unfortunately where I live is solid clay and no “fully” soil anywhere. You need a Kango drill to get any further than 1/4 “into the soil. The good point is that you do not need to go very far down with any bearing walls they can almost just swtart it at ground level.

I just recently built the same square fire pit, except mine is two cinder blocks high. Would you still recommend the liner if the liner doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the base cinder blocks?
No, the pit does burn very well I think because it's low enough. If you built up a pit too high or too narrow, then the fire probably wouldn't burn as well. If you add air flow to these designs by creating spaces between blocks, the fire will burn faster.
With you square fire pit I noticed that you to have openings around the exterior for airflow. Do you get smoke that spreads around, that requires you to move around. Where'd you get the square liner?

Having an open bottom is also better for rain water drainage. If the metal liner had a bottom, it would almost immediately rust out and you would end up with a dirt bottom anyway.
What size liner did you use with the standard cinder blocks? There is two sizes availible through the link. I have some left over cinder blocks and caps and are currently redoing our back yard, so your design may be perfect. Thanks and great job on the video!
We got a slab poured down to build a porch and the cement truck guy poured the remaining on my grass.I decided to make a fire 🔥 pit there. Can you tell me how to start. Will I need to Dig the concrete up or pour more to make a bass or floor for the fire pit ?
IMO you shouldn't put a fire pit directly on cement because it will crack from the heat. Perhaps you could build the spot the extra cement went into the base of the walls for your pit or build the pit next to it and have it as a stepping stone of sorts to get to the fire pit?
Good effort but not a fair comparison. You used different materials for both of them. The sand, for example, not only makes bricklaying better but also holds the heat underneath the floor, the same concept as using glass which you didn't use for the square shape fire pit. The shape of the fire pit doesn't really contribute to anything, the size of the fire area and the material used are the key components. The hollow blocks aren't meant to hold heat but they do at a degree, however, it does allow heat to dissipate quicker than refractory bricks or even engineering bricks. Try to build a square shape fire pit, using sand underneath the fire area with refractory bricks or stones and you will see the real difference and you will be able to make a fair comparison between both of them. There is a reason why a fire pit is normally of a round shape but that is not really important here. I also would add a drainage and air intake system to make it smokeless and keep the water away from the fire area.
Square fire pits are a trip hazard. The corners jut out and at night when you want to switch seats they can catch your feet unexpectedly. Tripping around a red hot fire pit can end badly, at least it did for the guy I had to pull out of the pit and take to hospital.
I like the square look, maybe because the other is so common .They both look beautiful though. Nice job

We have enjoyed our circle pit, but as tree continue to fall, it is too small for our needs. We are going to switch to a larger square design.
The other biggest difference is one is hollow.

Held up super well! It's been in use for two years. I have had to sand down and repaint the liner each year to keep it nice though

I use cobblestone with no liner. They don't crack and look great. Cement blocks are not nice to look at for me.

Not any difference at all! I can actually have hotter fires in the square because there's more area for the fire to get bigger!
With the square rim I noticed it having not bottom. Did you just set the logs on the dirt that’s from the ground?
Yes I burn directly on the dirt because it is not flammable. 🙂

I think the square design has been easier to clean out ash given the shape of my shovel. :)
