      Thanks for the video. If possible, could you do a comparison between the OM-3 and the S9, comparing the shooting experience.
      Personally I am still rocking the GH5 and S5 for video, but I carry the lumix GX7 as a EDC. Love the pics it produces! But sometimes I use it as a close up camera, paired with a pocket 3, for "emergency interviews" but ofcourse the image from the old 8bit sensor quickly falls apart in a dim lit environment. It's a bummer, for being a "photocentric camera" that they have flip out screen instead of a flip up.
      With all that said. Which one would you pick? Or would you rather go for something else, 10 bit, flip up, rangefinder style?

    I pulled out my 51 year-old film OM-1 and it weighs 485 grams, virtually the same as the OM-3 with battery. It also is wide, wider than my digital OM-1. Lack of a hand grip was no problem to us in the past. The camera was cradled with the left hand, and with long, heavy lenses, the left hand supported them. Just a couple days ago, I was thinking, wouldn't it be nice to have built-in digital equivalents of Wratten filters for monochrome, and, lo and behold, the OM-3 has them. Want to shoot landscapes in B&W like Ansel Adams? You have to use Wratten filters. Weather sealing is essential for us who do nature photography, and the best image stabilization in the industry means that I don't carry a tripod. I live in northern Minnesota, and when it's -40, I just tuck the camera with lens inside my parka and am ready to photograph at any time.

    In the States the OM-3 is $1999.99 body only. That is a tough sell. As an MFT/OMS fanboy I love the idea of this camera and will most likely pick one up. Wish the price was a bit lower, but given the IP53 weather-sealing, the features, the ergonomics, same battery as the OM-1 and continued support for all existing lenses, I'm sure I'll cave in. MFT and specifically OMS/Olympus gear is just so damn fun to use and the OM-3 has some promising improvements to get creative quickly. I like the art dial from the PEN F and the new CP button. There will always be haters and skeptics but I think the true MTF and OMS daily users will enjoy this camera. It won't replace my OM-1 MII but makes for a good traveling companion. The original PEN-F mirrorless body still commands a price tag of $1300 to $1400 on the used market, so the OM-3, like nearly all previous Olympus and OMS cameras before it, should have a usable shelf life of many, many years. I still use the ten year old OM-D E-M10 MII for street and travel and expect to have as much fun with the OM-3 ten years from now.

    If you are thinking about getting one, don't let the sensor be the consideration unless you really need a lot of low light photography where you need to shoot higher ISO for freezing movement- since you can do static shots at lower ISO thanks to the IBIS.

      .. and yet it doesn't. The only real advantage of M43 is the size of lenses (well, some) Sure they could make a 'vintage body' smaller but they haven't. The Nikon Zfc and Fujifilm bodies are smaller and lighter yet have a larger sensor. A real contender would be an OM-10 or OM-5 sized body made with a light metal body like titanium or even a composite alloy... not THAT would be pulling it off.

    I wish I could justify spending the money, but that's not a complaint about the price. It's just that my Pen F is still rockin'. I'm 99% sure I will eventually get an OM-3 though. The only thing I wish they'd added was a system for what Lumix calls real time LUTs. The creative dial functions are so awesome, but most people never realized how great they are. I think if it was easy to create and share custom profiles, people would be in awe of the possibilities. I mostly shoot in mono mode, and the mono features on the Pen F (and now this) are amazing... but until you use it, it's hard to realize just how amazing and intuitive they are. Bring up the color wheel. Spin the front dial to choose which color to filter. Spin the rear dial to choose the strength of the filter. You can do it all, on the fly through the viewfinder, while setting up your shot. It's AWESOME.
    EDIT! The OM System website says you can share those creative dial custom settings. If they made it easy to do, that's very exciting.

What I do is buy the wool mittens that have finger holes with the top part of the mitten that is flap that can flip back to expose the the fingers. I flip the flap up when I need fine motor control of over my camera button and flip it back when I need to keep my fingers warm. I usually put a glove liner in them, so it works out great for keeping your fingers warm and controlling your camera buttons.

  • @Gynra
    @Gynra 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +29

    No compromises? How about the lower resolution EVF, the single card slot and the reduced burst rate and stabilisation compared to the OM-1? All cameras have compromises of course, but whether these are crucial or not depends on the use case of individuals. I get why someone would get excited over the looks and size of this camera, and if those things are really important then by all means go for it. It certainly is a very capable camera, but for me, the OM-1 is a much better fit, not least because the ergonomics are superior.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      I think you're exactly right with your last sentence there, if someone routinely uses longer lenses, or needs a dual SD slot, then the OM1 might be better anyway as it's more comfortable and designed for those purposes.
      Though for the burst modes it's worth noting that the Pro Capture mode is exactly the same in both cameras, so 20fps with CAF and up to 50 depending on the lens. So losing one or two clicks with the mechanical shutter doesn't seem like too much of a compromise to me personally, as if I definitely wanted to catch something I'd use the faster modes anyway.
      And again for the EVF - a great EVF is essential for wildlife photography for example- i lived inside my OM1 evf on safari! So that would be miles better for people who mainly shoot that stuff. But for everyday carry use i think there's more of a split between evf and viewfinder so having a slightly less good EVF doesn't bother me. Also... I didn't even realise it was less resolution until today 😂 it looks lovely and is great to use in practice. I think you'd need to literally put you eye to one then the other to really notice

    • @Gynra
      @Gynra 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @@MicroFourNerds I wouldn't argue with anything you say, and you make a compelling case for the OM-3. For me, it's not the size of the body that matters, it's the lenses. I regularly use a E-M1X with the same resolution finder, but whether the OM-3's finder is actually better by way of more advanced optics, I am unable to say. While the E-M1X's EVF doesn't hold me back, looking through it is not as pleasant an experience as the EVF on my Nikon Z8, which isn't all that much higher resolution in practice (3.69 million dots). All I know is that the Nikon viewfinder is much better than that of the E-M1X and appears (to my eyes) just as good as the 5.76 million dots of my Leica SL2-S. Thus I am willing to be persuaded that OM Systems has worked some magic with the viewfinder of the OM-3, but I can only assume costs or other constraints stopped them putting the OM-1's EVF in the OM-3.

    How good is the AF for street? I LOVED LOVED my OG EM5, but sadly, the face detect and tracking just didn't work well, and AF in general wasn't the greatest for street. My Sony A7 mkii is my level of "good AF"...if the OM-3 has that or better, I would happily go back to OM. LOVED the colors in my OG EM5, weather sealing, small primes, etc. for street.

      I agree, I really don't get the flagship price level. It would have been a lot more "approachable" if the price was in between this and the OM5. To me it just smells like they want 1.000 € extra just because it has the 4 year old "new" sensor. But even that seems odd as they have been able to discount the OM-1 MkI to around 1.200 EUR with cashback.
      Camera is nice and all. The price is a huge turnoff and tells me more about what the company is trying to do than what the camera is all about. Which is shame really.

    I think the issue doesn’t lay in comparison to other OM cameras but to similarly priced cameras from other brands. It’s a very tough sell against Nikon ZF, Fujifilm x-t5 [or even zfc and x-t50]. Like the hi res mode in om-3 is 50mp while the sensor itself in x-t50 is 40mp…and it has IBIS and it has film sims and subject tracking, bigger sensor etc., etc…for like 60% of the price of the OM-3. While keeping similar size too

    • @iSchrott3G
      @iSchrott3G 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Exactly my thought. If you like pure image quality, you go with a larger sensor. If you want great IBIS and compact lenses, you go for the OM1 and save a couple of bucks. If you purely want retro design inside the M43 cosmos, the OM5 design might be enough nostalgia.

      High res is 50, hand held, 80 on a tripod. If you are considering THIS camera, I expect you have lenses for it. FWIW Lumix G9 II does 100 Mpx hand-held. OM cameras have five and more stops of Live ND, I use that more often than I go to high resolution.

      I had this same thought which is why I can't justify getting this when I have an x-t5. However one thing to consider with the larger sensor is lens sizes. The fuji x primes are all significantly larger and heavier than similar ones on m43. The compact lenses are the main reason I keep my lumix gx85 around since it's sooooo tiny with the 20mm lumix prime.

Now, I have the OM-1 for nature photography and another brand’s (I’m afraid to even say it) camera for most other photography. While this looks like a great camera, I won’t be getting one for a few reasons: I like more megapixels for cropping; I’m one of those people who really enjoys a joystick (Sorry Emily!); and I much prefer a tilty screen to a flippy screen. That said, I’m happy that OM Systems is putting out a new and exciting small camera that takes advantage of the best aspects of M43. Brava Emily: a complete review like I've never seen in Italy. The memories of this camera take me back to the 70s, the golden years of Olympus when I photographed with the legendary OM-1 (not mine, I had other brands) that is traced by today's OM-3 Digitale. I saw it yesterday at the store. I would have preferred to have the timing ring rather than that of automatic modes and memory banks for the settings not so much to imitate the OM-1 as for the convenience of setting up quickly with the thumb and index finger of the right hand. A strangeness in your video: the video recording times of over 2 continuous hours without overheating and blocking whose test was carried out in a very northern latitude country in a usually cold season, I don't think that if I had been in the Mediterranean in the summer you would have gotten such a long continuous video recording time.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yes, in the press release now it's out, it says unlimited recording under 40 degrees C, and up to 40 mins I think over 40 degrees. Might struggle in some climates for sure for long clips! But for smaller bits I think 40 mins in tough heat is really generous. Definitely won't be shooting any outdoor wedding ceremonies with it any time soon though!

    I had high hopes for something innovative from OM System. I love their 20mm f/1.4, but at €2000 for just the body, it’s a hard sell, especially when I could grab a new OM1 Mark II for €2085 or a G9II for €1760 right now.
    I think you didn't mention the OM3's electronic viewfinder. It has the same resolution as my 2017 GH5 and the OM-5. Hopefully the EVF screen is better than those, but it's not ideal for outdoor photography or manual focusing with legacy glass. Also, I doubt the missing joystick is due to engineering challenges. Come on, it's an ergonomic standard these days, and this isn't an entry-level priced camera.
    I’ll wait a few months to see if Lumix releases something new. If not, I’ll likely upgrade to the G9II once I see it for under €1500. It offers 25MP, a joystick, better EVF resolution, and is a beast for video with impeccable ergonomics. Sure, it's bigger and uglier, but sometimes, function trumps form.

      @@oneeyedphotographer no I was not aware of that, but I question: would those "large" parts not likely be titanium and ceramic vs. plastic? At least the parts that come in contact with serious heat on re-entry would likely be ceramic. Perhaps other key components (electrical connectors inside the hull) are plastic, but the parts heating up on re-entry? I kind of doubt that. Yes, aluminium (one type of metal) has a low melting point (660 C) vs steel (iron and carbon and chromium for stainless that melts around 1450 C but it's really heavy for flying vehicles), why the Concord jets was made from titanium (melts around 1700 C and light and strong but expensive and hard to work with) since aluminum used on most regular aircraft would age harden and weaken due to air friction at the speeds achieved by the concord, but I'm sure there are parts, maybe even "large" parts on the space shuttle that are made from specialized heat resistant plastic. Just the same I'm happy the OM3's has a magnesium alloy body (melting point 650 C). I'm unsure of the melting point of the engineered plastics on the EM5 mkiii or OM5 but I prefer the look and feel of metal (magnesium alloy), which is why I've kept using my EM5 mkii. I'm sure there are parts inside the OM3 that are high quality plastic as well. Either way I believe the "large plastic parts" on the space craft that take a lot of heat may in fact be ceramic (a totally different material) and that even metal with a low melting point of magnesium alloy or aluminium above 600 C will be sufficient for most photographic applications.

    Hi Emily, a useful review, which answered a lot of questions, many thanks. Unfortunately, although the camera ticks nearly all the boxes as a light compact EDC, the dealbreaker for me is no front grip like the OM5/EM5/EM10. If OM System had used a similar removable grip of the EPL-6, I would already be an OM3 owner! Fingers crossed the OM5 Mkii has subject tracking.

      @Centauri27 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well, I'm sure there will be a wealth of 3rd party grips out for this camera soon, if OM Systems themselves don't produce one. But yeah, the lack of a grip is a deal breaker for me.

    Only saying this because you said you were in a mood to fight :-). In this post I want to address the price issue and what I think could have been done that's still compelling:
    - OM-5 sensor. This sensor has a reasonable fast refresh even if it's not stacked (Z6iii speed / 60Hz) but should help a lot with that price because not stacked
    - Do at least same live ND of the EM1Mark III (the OM-5 is one less ND level, so that's an upgrade)
    - Include the GND ND to the level of the live ND (yes, it can be done, that's a post processing/CPU feature, not sensor bound - if you can do liveND to 5 stops, you can do GND ND to 5 stops)
    - Yes, keep those PenF color profiles and options
    - AI AF/improved AF/AI Jpeg engine of OM1/OM3 as it came out
    - IBIS like what OM-5 already does. Let's mark it at 6 stops if CIPA changed (apparently it did)
    - Faster HHHR resolve like OM3/OM1
    - 14-bit RAW options for HHHR/ tripod HR (this isn't really stacked sensor dependent either)
    - Same EVF OM3 came out with
    This would net hopefully a significant lower price, less high electronic shutter FPS (but the OM-5/EM1MKIII already do like what, 20? 30?)
    Maybe price could be $1500 USD MSRP? Like 1500-1600 Euros?
    Yes, I do think that while you will always get complainers, this nets you virtually the same level of image quality (we know by now the OM-1 sensor never captured 2 stops better DR or ISO over previous sensor, that was a real class on misinformation by some influencers), with key creator color options. Why does the OM-3 need a stacked sensor? It's almost like maybe they could not buy the OM-5 sensor anymore in bulk or something.
    The OM-3 is not the kind of camera that needs a stacked sensor. And the OM-5 sensor can already capture at quite a high FPS electronic shutter in general. I really think this would have made it more attractive for someone not invested in m43rds already.
    As for PenF sized boy 'can't be made weather sealed' - the EM5.2 body *IS* weather sealed and it's quite small. yes, I say it can be done.

    About the sensor: Emily I think we need to look at the context.
    While the sensor itself has been changed, it *feels* like this is the same image quality we're getting with the 2016 Pen-F, which I think was Olympus' first 20 megapixel sensor camera. So while it was unlikely, some of us did hold out that maybe the OM-3 would do what the Pen-F did back in 2016 - a bump in image quality for photographs.
    I have the OM-1 Mark ii and I love that camera, but hot damn, I can't deny that it takes the same quality of images as the EM1 Mark ii and Pen-F - especially in the ISO 200 to 1600 range.
    The sensor conversation I find so strange because I think most of the people who say that 20 megapixels is fine, would also be thrilled if they gave us something a bit higher resolution.
    I get that you're excited about this camera, and that's lovely. But I don't really get who this camera is for.
    I think if you're a professional, the single card slot is a dealbreaker - at least for me, it is. I had TWO cards corrupt in 2 years, and I'm so thankful I had a backup in the camera.
    If you're a person who wants to take nice photos of the family and friends and want the retro styling, then $2000 is a lot of money. Forget the cheaper options in Fuji and Nikon for a second, you can get the OM5 or EM5 Mark iii for cheaper - the photos will look the same for the most part. As for the styling, I wish they kept the rangefinder Pen-F look because to me, this just looks like a bigger OM5 for the most part.
    I dunno. The camera isn't for me. Speaking for myself - I'm okay I guess with the same 20 megapixels, but if they gave me two card slots, Pen-F styling, and a joystick on the back, I would be on board.

      The pixel size in full-frame 100mpx sensors is the same as m4/3 at 20mpx. You're not going to get more mpx without a revolutionary sensory that's going to go to a flagship camera first.
      Maybe they could have tweaked the computational side a bit, but just getting the entire camera into a smaller, cheaper body is already great, and a pretty significant accomplishment.
      But, sounds like this camera just isn't for you. And imo, that's fine. If the lower price and different ergonomics don't get you excited, don't buy it.

      Same resolution, but not the same IQ. My experience from the OM-1 vs the G9 and E-M1.II is the stacked 20MP sensor is better in terms of both noise and DR to the older 20MP non-stacked sensor from the Pen-F.

    • @jasonwrites9186
      @jasonwrites9186 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@adam_mawz_maas Well, to my eyes, in the 200 to 1600 ISO range using the same lens, photographing the same thing under the exact same lighting conditions, I can't tell the images apart between my OM1-Mark ii, my EM1-Markii, EM1-Markiii, EM5-Markiii, Pen-F, and OM-5. I can't comment on any other cameras. Once I go past ISO 1600 I notice some differences, but I find them minor. More differences in the 6400 and beyond range, but I don't personally like the images in any M43 camera past 3200 anyway. Bit better shadow recovery in post for the newer cams, but...I personally find the differences marginal.
      I mean, it is what it is. You might be noticing more of a difference than I am within these cameras.
      Personally, I don't find the image quality to be lacking per say. I'm just saying that for those who ARE disappointed they're not getting a resolution bump, I can appreciate where they're coming from since the IQ has largely been the same for a long time.

    Little camera? hmm it's noticeably bigger and heavier than the OM-5, heavier and longer than the Nikon ZF-c, heavier and bigger than a Fujifim XT50.. not sure about all the fuzz... aside from a metal body (which doesn't mean it's better built or more likely to take a fall) there's not much to it.

    • @Raist3db
      @Raist3db 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I agree with you this is NOT a "little camera." I don't know where Emily gets that honestly. It's bigger than PenF, OM-5, X-E4, X-T50. It's pretty much almost an X-T5 class size.
      The good news to me is that it seems OM Systems is showing a pulse, and I hope they can do a proper update to the OM-5. Everyone saying "but didn't you guys ask all the time for a compact" - no. We asked fora. PenFII or EM5.2 type body size.

    Cool camera but $2000 in the US body only is way too much. The OM 1 MkII is $2000 on sale right now. Bad decision there. And there are some compromises. Only shoots 6fps mech shutter. @ the Zf and Z6III are two different cameras with the same 24mp but there’s a $500 gap at all times between the two. Also the OM 1 II is the flagship camera. The Zf is $3500 cheaper than the Z9. I’m using this example because I’m sure you’re gonna use the “retro” look as the excuse for the OM3 vs everything else. There’s no excuse for $2000 for this camera. Ever. In any world or universe.

    This comment section is funny and majority praise. Clearly the M43 bias is high. I have an OM1 and love it but this $2000 USD price point for the om3 is not it. OM doesnt grow market share with this. Its more $ than a Nikon ZF or Fuji xt50. Just doesnt make sense. Heck its more the same price as an OM1mk2 which is on sale. And you can get a om1mk1 for about $1000. This Looks awesome but MFT already has an image of being lesser than other sensors so convincing people to spend more $ is silly.

      I mean lots of people with micro four thirds kits are watching videos about micro four thirds cameras. Bit like saying there's a lot of praise for a Sony camera from people that have Sony systems.
      It is more expensive that a Zf... But I don't have lenses for a zf. So unless I say I'm going to sell everything, double the sizes of some of my lenses, still spend more money new for new comparison, then yes you could change systems, and you'd take great photos. Just like you can with this camera.
      Just like I do with my 5Dii and my Eos film camera.
      Ultimately why buy a Sony A1 when a z8 is cheaper... Well because you've got a million e mount lenses, and you might like Sony

    • @UpgradeLemonade
      @UpgradeLemonade 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @owenrodgers8020 yes but my Greater point is you don't earn new customers with this approach. OM and more importantly MFT need that. Which in turn helps us MFT fans. More excitement to the system gets more lens and cameras being made. This $2000 price is counter productive. Sure if you own MFT already it's a nice new option but it's not competitive (besides it's looks)

      @@owenrodgers8020 The fact that we do own already many MFT lenses does make the OM3 neither cheaper nor better. It is about price/performance ratio. We would all love to see MFT market share to grow. But with these bad management decidons (only 2.36MP EVF & 2000€ body only), you are killing the system. No matter how retro the body looks, no matter how many MFT lenses we already have. Do you really want MFT to disappear?

      I see this camera addressing four markets:
      - Existing MFT users.
      - People who once used and loved a film Olympus OM1 or subsequent model, or a similarly small film SLR from another brand.
      - FF camera users looking for a smaller, elegant ILC camera that doesn’t make them look too dorky in front of their kids.
      - The kids if they are into retro gear and can’t get or don’t want a Fuji.
      The first three categories are dominated by people (mostly men) by men over 40. They generally have access to enough cash to fund expenses hobbies if they put their mind to it.
