  • An American Classic this week with Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis; a book written almost a hundred years ago and yet frighteningly relevant to America even today. Make sure you're subscribed and leave a comment for the chance to won one of two copies.
    Babbitt
Businessman George F. Babbitt loves the latest appliances, making money and the Republican party. In fact, he loves being a Solid Citizen even more than he loves his wife. But Babbitt comes to resent the middle class trappings he has worked so hard to acquire. Realising that his life is devoid of meaning, he grows determined to transcend his trivial existence and search for a greater purpose.
In the economic boom years of 1920s' America, Babbitt became a symbol of middle-class mediocrity, and his name an enduring part of the American lexicon.

I just got done with this book. 5/5. It was written a long time ago, and the language is different, but it is so relevant to today's America.
Also very interesting because it takes place during the prohibition era. Definitely recommend this book.

I keep hearing talk of Babbitt now and gosh, intrigued, and certainly to be talking about the American Dream at this in time is fascinating. I hope to write an essay collecting a few such books and Babbitt would be a welcome addition. Thanks for your videos!

Sinclair Lewis is one of my favorite authors. If you really want to understand what's going on in US politics now, you might also want to read It Can't Happen Here, about Fascism in America. It's not as good of a novel as Babbitt but it is a great political document, in a way.

One of my favorite booktubers, Whitney at "All the Shelves" recently talked about "Babbitt" in a series she's presenting on American literature 1900 through 1950. That and your discussion have me really intrigued!

Deeply unfunny is perhaps the best way I have had the situation in America described to date. I mean, I have a few other words but they are maybe best described as... deeply inappropriate for Booktube? >.>
I had never heard of this one but the comparison to Yates seems really apt - maybe also to All The King's Men by Robert Penn Warren which does a good job of unpacking the true motivation behind American politics.
Also, as a less relevant side note: LOVE the cover!

Some of my European friends have asked me about what's been happening with Trump and I keep wishing that I could tell them that the whole thing is a joke!

I live in the States and agree that Trump as the nominee is definitely not funny, more like horrific and ridiculous. I'm going to go look for Babbitt and see if I can find some comedic relief from the politics here. Sheesh.
