I just scrutinized my first set of still photos from this camera and while the shooting experience is great (the burst rate and shutter response are snappy and the auto focus system feels like a perfect happy medium with not too many or too few points) and the colors are fantastic, I’ve found that this is my first camera to have a pretty severe but intermittent front focusing issue with native lenses. I’ve had this sort of thing happen with third party lenses in the past but this is the first time I’ve seen it occur with multiple canon lenses. I’ll try fiddling with the AF adjustment in the menu, but I’m skeptical the issue can be so easily corrected as it seems to be intermittent so I imagine a blanket compensation setting (even per lens) will mean I’ll trade front focus issue for back focus issues sometimes. It’s a slight bummer, but I had already mentally relegated this camera to video only, as I’ve got a few cameras I already love for still photos.
I could listen to you talk about old cameras all day, keep them coming! Great content! I have the 6d mark ii, it parallels the 70D video dual pixel autofocus and flippy screen but full frame.
@@rodp7803 thank you! I was verrrry close to getting a 6Dii instead of this, but the appreciation I was surprised to find for the 40D made me curious about a 20mp crop sensor. Again, full frame fanboy here, but when I was shooting with the 40D I really liked how much reach I could get out of tiny lenses- like the EF 100mm F2 on a crop sensor is such a teeny tiny package for the equivalent of a 160mm on FF, or carrying a nifty fifty on it instead of my 85mm F1.2 on a FF felt crazy little and nimble
@@GarrettXPrime I was very close to getting an M50 instead of this, but I’ve lived the EF adapter life when I was using RF cameras and didn’t want to go back to that, also I like that my 70D and 5Diii use the same battery. I’ve only fiddled with an M50 once and I marveled at its small size, but never got a chance to investigate the picture quality
I haven’t done a lot of stills with this camera yet but the colors seem to be very good- I’d say better than my 5Diii which tends to shift magenta more than I’d like, but not as good as my 5D classic, which is just my gold standard now. The 70D has noticeably better DR and better low light performance than my 40D, but not as good as 5Diii or 6D. I think, just off my little experience, the colors are very close to the 6D original. I think I’m finally feeling the pixel density problem I’ve read about for years, as lens’ imperfections (like color fringing) appear to be more pronounced with this camera. I learned with my 5D classic that it was forgiving when using lenses that are known to be soft or color fringey but those same lenses on the 70D show more pronounced problems. I do really enjoy the focusing system on the 70D, it’s just the right amount of points (and I think all cross type, too) so using area focus I can jump from one third to center to the other third in 3 clicks- my 5Diii has way too many points (I disable most) and my 5D and my 6D could use a few more. The burst rate on the 70D is snappy, I don’t tend to use high speed continuous unless I’m bracketing shots but this camera makes it quick and intuitive to blast three shots at a time.

Very good video thanks. How do you find the still photo files compared to your 5D classic or your 40D? Are they comparable?
