Ever wake up with a song on your mind that you loved in your childhood, search for it on the Internet, find it and discover it's even more breathtaking and beautiful than you remember? THIS is such a song.
When I first heard that steel guitar opening the instrumental section I decided right then I was going to be a steel player. I had not (still haven't) heard anything so original and compelling occupying eight bars ever to that point. And that C6! Bobby Black turned the course of that band around (imo) when he joined them after Lost in the Ozone, and brought such a wide horizon of influences with him. And the excellent musicianship of the rest of the band just soaked it up. Barlow and Dickerson are one of the most underrated rhythm sections of all time.
Since 1973 my ever favourite band. Not just the virtuoso musicians,so together, but the songs they sang were so fun and happy, some they wrote themselves.
Absolutely hilarious, but with a great western swing, Bob Wills would have been proud of Commander Cody (maybe), also notable for a very young Bill Kirchen playing guitar, possibly the most unsung guitar hero of the world ever!
And the same may be said of the Old Commander too. I try to go and see George play every couple of years when he comes to my part of Florida and there's not a nicer, more approachable rock and roller out there.
This tune was first recorded for RCA Victor's Bluebird label in San Antonio, TX in 1937 by the Modern Mountaineers with Smoky Wood, vcl; the great J.R. Chatwell,f; Hal Hebert,ts; J.C. Way,stg; Lefty Groves,g. There were lots of fine Western Swing bands scattered all over the Southwest in the 1930s.
Lloyd Pratt Commander Cody , New Riders , Marshall Tucker Allman Brothers live in central park NYC 1974 summer. Music was never the same again for me after that
I just saw Commander Cody here in Cleveland a couple of weeks ago. After the show, I asked the Commander about his showing up in this movie. He said that he knew co-director Allan Arkush from his days as stage manager of the Fillmore East, and that they were offered "a thousand bucks and all of the blow we could snort".
My dad used to look like Billy C in the early 70's, he was also a big CC&TLPA fan. He passed it on to me as well. Still love all the early Commander stuff.
This band had it all. Especially when I was The University of Michigan 1969-1970 whre they were regulars at Mr. Flood's Party. 25 cent beers and an ounce of weed was a $5 fine. It still is in 2017.
Have seen CC&HLPA play several times over years, the big band, and George in other iterations of the band (once with Vassar Clemens & Buddy Guy, awesome!) A couple dozen times. The Best Bar Band Ever! Stood at the bar and drank many a beer with the Commander.
Buffalo Bruce Barlow was such an inspiration to me ... as a bassist I learned quite bit from listening to his playing...Lance and him were so tight ... the heartbeat ... the groove
God, THANK YOU!!!! One of my favorite movies ever, and this number makes me laugh out loud. By the third verse you just want to say "what is everyone doing again? I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that?" And the guy who bomps the keyboard with his foot kills me. THANK YOU!
This is one of my FAVORITE things in the world. Thank you for uploading this scene! Backstory of how I came to know this movie/scene: I was 23 in the year 2000. My boyfriend was 36, and he always rented these older, cheese ball movies (don’t get me wrong I Love the 70’s and 80,’s especially the rock). So one night, I came home from work, weary and spent. I sit down for a cigarette, and then my boyfriend puts this movie in. My initial reaction was “Oh jeez, here we go again.” Albeit, in a good way. However, when the movie came to this particular scene, I woke right up, as did my usually curmudgeon boyfriend; we both perked up and said, “What the heck was that?! Let’s rewind it!” We rewound it about 3 or 4 times and laughed our asses off. Anyway, I never forgot this scene and song. If I’m feeling badly, all I have to do is watch this. Most people, actually everyone I’ve ever met, except my (now) ex-boyfriend, has no idea what I’m talking about when I sing this song. Love it!
OMG A 2 min. song from 1973. Loved this in high school. Those were the dark days of Led Zep. among other other 70s bullshit. Music changed for the better by 1978 with the Ramones, The Jam etc. Still love C Cody. Good music like this is great no matter how old it is, or how old/young you are.
This is by far one of the KooLest songs I've heard in a very long time; and may I say catchiest?? Just disappointed that it took me this long to discover you guys. Watched Hollywood Boulevard on Netflix as a mere flux and can I say; one of the most campiest, FUN movies I have ever seen!! Damn, did the 70's look like it was a great time to be livin ( I was alive; just a wee lad of 5 when this came out)
I used to have a beta tape of HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD and I would play it constantly. One of my all time favorite movies to get stoned to. This is my favorite scene from the movie, aside from any scene Dick Miller is in.
saw these guys late 80s early 90s [in all fairness they were good years] but they graced the stage at the oliver house in toledo ohio and they were so fucking good , and the place was packed. the fire marshall threatened to close the venue if people didnt sit down, these motherfuckers absolutely juked the house . it was a sight to behold
Where the hell did you get this? I NEEED more footage of these guys live. Just found em and really like the way their live recordings sounded, only thing missing was the visuals!
My old man turned me on to Commander too, everybody has major chops, and it creates the perfect blend of country western boogie woogie brass hippie jam band? Chord progression: E A E B7 E A E Chorus: A E A B7 EEverybody dancin truckin AYou can see'em swinging and Fuckin E B7Truckin. fuckin. E. A. EEverybody's doin it now ADown in Berkeley on the street EYou can here them dancing feet ASee the people everywhere they go B7You can see'em singing hiddee-hiddee-ho
Absolutely one of the greatest bands... they could play anything. Unfortunately on my list of the "ones that got away ".... Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Allman Bros., Muddy Waters, Janis Joplin, gotta stop here - too painful !! :(

RIP George Frayne- the Good Commander. Great artist and musician/band leader.

You can say that again. Lance is my favorite Western swing drummer!
Bobby Black was a fine steel player who spent years with the San Francisco Bay area western swing band Lost Weekend.
Since 1973 my ever favourite band. Not just the virtuoso musicians,so together, but the songs they sang were so fun and happy, some they wrote themselves.

The Titan of the Telecaster. Quite a gentleman too.
Oh yes indeed, have met BK a couple of times and as you say a complete gentleman and one hell of a guitar player.
And the same may be said of the Old Commander too. I try to go and see George play every couple of years when he comes to my part of Florida and there's not a nicer, more approachable rock and roller out there.
YES!

I watch this every day
First heard this gem at big outdoor cookout in 1980. I was 20 and had the whole world ahead of me. I never forgot this song.

My favorite CC song! Seeds and Stems is a close second. Too much fun!
Simplemente fantástico....!!!!

@treven314 Certainly was. The Commander made some slight changes in the lyrics but it is pretty much an updating of the older tune.
This is a song from 1937 by the Modern Mountaineers. And yes, they do say "Fucking" on the original version.

@pmyodb1 Modern Mountaineers - Everybody's Truckin' might be the original?
Oops, a few of the turnarounds at the end of the verses don't go to the D7, rides on G instead.
Bobby Black was a genius.
bill kirchen!
I WAS looking-up my favorite SW CloneTrooper, but when I saw Charles Manson had written a song, figured, "Ah, why the Hell not?"
Is there a studio recording of this song?
I thought it was Weird Al from the thumbnail.

Hilarious--I doubt that the 1940s original had quite the same lyfics, though!!!!!!
Just about the same: th-cam.com/video/LFcHD8XsCEc/w-d-xo.html
