      fantastic roland guitar synth ! as long as i know, the first multi timbral (6 voices) synth linked to guitar, and it was a nightmare to play to have what Adrian and Robert are getting with it, you had to carefully play the string gently, without too much hand noise etc, my brother was having one, i tried to play, and didn't succeed (im not a guitarist anyway) to get this softness

    • @cosmicjazzman4817
      @cosmicjazzman4817 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Mine too. This is one tune that solidified my reason for wanting to be a drummer, musician. Bill Burford.
      I'm a Jazz/Fusion, Progressive Rock kinda guy. Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham; John Coltrane, Elvin Jones; Buddy Rich; Miles Davis; Tony Williams Lifetime, Allan Holdsworth; King Crimson 1969-1975, 1981-84, 1994-now.... So much great music being made today is underground.
      This tune takes you on your own personal journey through the cosmos of your mind. This is a Masterpiece. The last note of each phrase was so unnerving at first listen. It still is! It's the whole point. I'm so used to it now it sounds "normal" to me. It's a feeling of being at peace with the universe and being aware of the horrors that are out there and the benevolent and seeing the beauty in it all. That's my take on an instrumental. This album is still one of my all time favorite recordings. Love this line up.

    On a dense and soft carpet of tribal African rhythms, the twisted and piercing sound of a mystical and sensual "Turkish trumpet" develops ... Then cascades of crystalline notes occur that seem to rain from the polychrome windows of a Gothic cathedral ... and finally the "Turkish trumpet" returns, surprisingly resuming the Gothic harmonies ...
    King Crimson create a detailed harmonic structure that takes us directly to the surprising fusion of the most diverse Souls, each with its own identity, all stretched out to sing the Immense Power of Life and Love

      King Crimson was kind of a nexus band for a long while; everybody who was anybody in 80s art rock either played with them or knew them personally. People have actually drawn maps of the intricate connections between KC and damned near every other band within their horizons, from Yes to Brian Eno to the Sisters of Mercy. Not a surprising thing to see shoutouts being traded back and forth (such as Eno's "King's Lead Hat" -- a deliberate anagram on "Talking Heads").

    I only listen to this tune at night, it's better in the winter on a snowy night like tonight or a night where I can see a lot of stars. It's so moving and beautiful, the parts Fripp does in the middle of the song sound like cold winter air, and they match the vibrance of aurora borealis to me. It makes me think of the sky as this big beautiful dark blue dome, the top of which is illuminated with pretty, dim stars. This dome sky keeps us in, it shelters us from what we can only imagine lying on the other side, out in the deep regions of the unknown. As horrifying as life can be down here, it protects us from horrors beyond our world, and it makes me wonder why the book is titled as such?

      That would make perfect and brilliant sense to me as part of the creative process. I'm ready to believe that there were *hours* of that, from which the best and most inter-coherent bits were selected to assemble the final recording.

What else could you want after experiencing that? How do people who dont have a chance to experience that cope with things? When Bernardo Bertolucci in 1990 made a movie out of Paul Bowles' book, he missed on this mind-blowing piece. It would have been a far better soundtrack than what was chosen. There are very beautiful landscape scenes in the movie, and the idea of a still, almost solid sky that covers and protects from high above is depicted by the camera in a poignant way. I guess Robert Fripp understood and foresaw exactly that.

    • @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017

      That was a period piece. This wouldn't have been a good fit. Besides, this song is a sound sculpture more than a regular song.

      @@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 I leave you to your sculptures, not my cup of tea. This music is clearly inspired by the book. I reckon you've never been in the Sahara, so you'd do good to have a second hard look at that movie, which was wholeheartedly endorsed by Bowles.

      @@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 This beautiful music was inspired by a beautiful book. Like that particular book, it trascends eras or styles. Not a coincidence. If you read that book or saw that movie and didn't manage to catch their trascending meaning, if you didn't realize in those moments that some skyes can shelter you too, then you listen to Robert Fripp and miss in this music the exact same description of stillness, eternity, peace and SAFETY that the book and the movie manage to convey.

    • @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017

      @@marcofaustinelli7010 I read the book. It's overrated. Yes there is some poetic beauty of the Sahara and alienated (and spoiled) travelers meeting real adversity. I do think Fripp may have been inspired by the book or the imagery, but it doesn't mean it would work with the film as it was made. Maybe another version would work.
