I would think if it was interspecies you would most likely need all the possible help you can get. Teens are still learning so it’s a lot easier to shape the mind, they’re still growing so the survivors would be nothing but strong. When you’re going up against what you don’t know, and when you loose over 50% of your soldiers. I think it’s a great move. You also don’t know how long a war will last. Could be months could be decades. Wouldn’t you rather train the young so the survivors can grow strong and save the older. At one point life will become war for them
