I didn't know Roy Acuff (0:47) was part of the show.. He was huge in helping make country music internationally successful as a promoter, even though he was a very admired artist back in his day. Admired by people like Hank Williams Sr, George Jones, and more.
I vaguely remember seeing Dub Taylor (1:16) from western movies, I think. Particularly a movie staring Willie Nelson called "Once Upon A Texas Train".
Crazy how Willie Nelson looked old, even back in those days. He's looked the same for decades.. Hope we get to keep him for much longer. He's one of the last still with us from the very early days of country music.. I wish someone would interview him about a lot of his experiences regarding his early days, and any experiences he might've had with legends that are no longer with us.

Roy and Glen Campbell played well together. Roy was a genius on the guitar.
As for his singing, Thank God and Greyhound She Is Gone, and Yesterday When I Was Young.

Both Roy and Jerry Reed had a penchant for comedy and the serious.
I'd add Bobby Bare and Chet Atkins to the list. Fantastic musicians with serious voices and a knack for cutting up. Johnny too, of course.
Shel Silverstein wrote some of the best comedy classic songs.

You will enjoy Roy Clark's mastery of stringed instruments. He could clown around while playing very difficult pieces. He also did a very seriously stunning rendition of "Malaguena".

My family weren't country music fans, but we appreciated bluegrass and folk music. We didn't watch regularly but were always glad to catch Roy and Buck performing while flipping the channels. During my teenaged babysitting years I watched it a lot though. I couldn't understand the size of the cast, half of them don't appear but to say one thing, appear in one skit as their one character making the same sort of joke every week, and maybe sit on a hay bale to watch someone perform and then clap for them. I wonder how many of the skits and jokes were filmed all at once and used as needed, freeing the performers up to do whatever they did the rest of the year? The musical numbers made it worthwhile though.

Roy Clark could play anything with strings. Guitar, banjo, fiddle, you name it. That is where his real talent was. He could of course sing well. “Yesterday when I was young “ was one of his hits!! But you should listen to his instrumentals if you really want to see something amazing.

My folks used to watch this religiously. They grew up on the farm thru the great depression, this was their music. Definitely reminds me of them when I see this stuff.
While I was never a country fan, I can appreciate any good musicianship, and Hee Haw was chock full of it. Legends on it almost weekly.

@@DjPjrocReacts911 Jimmy Dean was very real country singer. He had a very popular music variety show. First time I saw Hank Williams Jr was on Jimmy Dean, I think Hank was 14. Ralph the muppet was a regular on the show before there was a Muppets Show. Had many great stars from back in those days. This is the first song of Jimmy’s that you need to listen to. Country Hip Hop from 1961. Big Bad John th-cam.com/video/KnnHprUGKF0/w-d-xo.html

It was corn, but it was professionally done corn. And in real life Minnie Pearl was not the down home comedian she portrayed. She came from a well off family, and was well educated. But she knew how to relate to the common folk.

That song Roy Clark sang was really good - I see this is a new version of the show (compared to the early 70's versions) - it got quite a bit more sophisticated (sort of, in some areas)....It's amazing this show started in the late 60's and ran through the 90's! CBS cancelled this when "All in the Family" took off but the show continued in first-run syndication, pretty amazing. "Down the Hall" is the name of the song, I looked it up and it appears it was a song the Oak Ridge Boys sang.

A weekly event at our house till it went off the air. Yes it was "Trigger" with a very young hole in it.

Willie Nelson was always great, even in his clean shaven, short hair days.

Corny and campy, the early episodes are a treasure trove of classic country artists, this one you sampled appears to be from the 80s. It was still good, but they had lost some of their really good regulars like Junior Samples and Stringbean, and some of the long running skits had been replaced, like Where oh Where Are You Tonight, The Culhanes and Gloom Despair and Agony on Me, and the popping up out of the cornfield to do one liners.

Here's a good sample of an early show: Waylon Jennings is the guest and there's a good banjo number by Roy Clark th-cam.com/video/KGB4EevXqqU/w-d-xo.html

I still regret that I never got to see Roy Clark live. He was a virtuoso of stringed instruments like Jerry Reed and Ricky Scagg. The show was intentionally corny, but most of the music was wonderful.
