Solo Tarp Winter Camping- solitude and peace in Algonquin Park

  • I needed to clear my head and get out in nature by doing a simple solo tarp winter camping trip. This was my first winter camping adventure of the season and my first solo camping trip in a long while. I explored a backcountry part of the old railroad bed near highway 60 in Algonquin Provincial Park. The railroad stopped operating in the 1950's and makes for good hiking and bushwhacking through parts of Algonquin.

    Great to follow you through a winter adventure. Always glad to hear of an addition to the family. I first started to follow you on your brook trout fishing experiences in Algonquin and have learned alot. Planning my first solo into the park this spring ..... so stoked !! Anyway keep doing what you're doing.

    Nothing more peaceful than winter camping in the snow. It always surprises me when water doesn’t freeze buried in the snow.

    Never saw that way of supporting a grill with two pieces of log .

      Same here , great idea ! And also the bottle under the snow to keep it from freezing

      Me too !!!! Love it as I have seen quite a few people burn their food. Same with the bottle under the snow.

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought I would give it a try and it worked really well. I was able to reuse one of the logs in the morning but the other burned too much and had to be replaced. Thanks for watching Alex!

    Nice relaxing video Alec. How do you fid those Canadian Tire dehydrated meals? I have been tempted to try some.

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're alright, I want to try some of their other flavors. I got them for a great deal. I still rather homemade dehydrated meals but the simplicity of bagged meals is great. Thanks for watching.

    Great video alex. Nice way to hold that grill looks like algonquin doesn’t have much snow. Where did you start the trip to meet the old rail line for parking

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Clifford, unfortunately, there hasn't been much snow in the Algonquin area. It's the least I've seen in years. I started my hike where the railroad bed crosses hwy 60 around km 22. I was dropped off there so I didn't have to worry about parking.

      @AleconAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Andrea. It was an idea that worked out. The diameter of the supporting logs was just big enough to provide good support.

    Exactly something I want to give it a try. In the situation like yours... how would I go about booking it at OntarioParks? As in ... just choose nearest allowed access point to book it?

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can book backcountry permits online or on the phone. There are a few access points to choose from including "Other Remote Winter Backcountry". Thanks for watching!

    Alex, You are doing really nice work with your videos. I also enjoy seeing a new way to do things and the slices in the logs for the grate support was a dandy. Keep the videos coming.

    Hi I want to ask is there is this need to book it at the Ontario Parks website in backcountry camping or just go it

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Backcountry camping permits are required in Algonquin Park. They can be purchased online at reservations.ontarioparks.com/ or by calling 1-888-ONT-PARK (1-888-668-7275). Thanks for watching!

    Is three slabs of meat your minimum when under a tarp in the winter?

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      😂 I eat more meat cold camping that's for sure! Got to keep my body warm overnight. You should try it out.

      If people aren't equipped for winter ,as with a winter sleeping bag, it can be a terrible experience.

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's too bad. I agree with Alex, not having the right clothing and gear can make it a miserable experience especially in extreme cold temperatures. Hopefully you can convince other friends to join you, Algonquin is just as beautiful in the winter. Thanks for checking out the video!
