Aigyl Yelshibaeva. Set of five epic Kazakh songs

1) Terme - Nauryzbek zhiray. (Aktobe region zhiray schools)
2) Terme - Sugir zhiray. (Mangystau region zhiray schools)
3) Terme - Omir Kodhekbaiuly. (Jaik zhiray schools) (Jaik is the Kazakh name for the river Ural)
4) Jhir Kiz Jibek. (Western Kazakhstan region zhiray schools)
5) Syinbai zhiray. (Zhetisu region zhiray schools)
Aigyl Yelshibaeva, from Kazakhstan, sings a set of five epic songs and plays the dombra (a kind of long-necked plucked lute). These songs all belong to the so-called jïr (zhiray) genre, which is the major genre of Kazakh epic poetry. Filmed by me on 1 December 2012 at the 3rd symposium of the ICTMD Study Group on Music and Dance in the Turkic World, at the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Cambridge, England.
