I just got one of these, same issue hotwiring the starter wires externally so it may also be a broken wire at the starter motor. I didn't get a battery or charger with mine, i'm considering fitting some other battery system to it or just three 18650 batteries in a holder mounted to it might be the go(lighter than the old pack) I'm yet to use it though as it's carby will be also full of gunk no doubt. but it would be easier to start while on a ladder with the hedge trimmer fitted if' i'm strong enough to safely control it.

I like this video. It's the kind that covers little known aspects of equipment. Now you have something nice to sell. You can get a universal trimmer strap for $3.99 from eBay if you haven't already ordered some. Ryobis are generally heavy. Nice job, Home Garage. Now go warsh up fer yur supper!

I picked up a dead Ryobi Backpack Blower on the side of the road with the Touch Start. Mainly, the carb was gummed up and the shoulder straps were broken. I, too, didn't have a battery and pretty much tested it out about the same way that you did. I don't know about for a weed trimmer but for a backpack blower, the touch start is a great feature.

Two wires red, positive (+) and black, negative (--) to motor. Battery terminals marked red (+) positive and black (--) negative. Why did you need to constantly change wires over?

Thanks for the comment. Turns out the wires were switched from the factory that's why I had to switch them after re- soldering the terminal.

I have a Featherlite weedeater. I cleaned the carb. fuel filter looks ok. The problem is it takes 20 pushes on the primer bulb to get it to start. A new carb.kit cost 50.00. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. I am afraid to spend 50.00 and I have the same problem because it may be another issue. I like this unit because it is very lite.

I’ve this model sitting around since almost new. Battery grossly undersized and stopped taking a charge after a couple of weeks. Recoil cord too short to start a two stroke after lay up. So yesterday hooked up car starter jump leads to the two battery terminals. The curved part of battery casing is near the positive terminal. Electric start motor cranked beautifully, maybe twenty revolutions later the engine kicked in followed by a half hours work.
Now to gut the battery casing and set up convenient jump terminals.... New battery from spurious origin at £36 🇬🇧 out of the question.

I found my Tanaka battery start at an estate sale for I think 10 bucks? Needed a carb kit and cleaning. It had electric start but the battery was shot. Little expensive and heavy to replace so I just removed it and use the pull start. Eventually maybe I will make or buy a battery for it but it starts so easy and doesn't have the added weight of the battery. They have come a long way in terms of battery weight since they made that trimmer so for an elderly person or someone who hates pulling on pull cords I think they can come in handy. I just see it as another system that can cause an issue.

I came here just to see the starter system. That's an interesting design, looks like the 2 little plastic dinguses on the motor are centrifugally throw out when the trimmer is running on gas, which disengages the starter, and the interface between the gears and electric motor is the black part affixed to the larger gear.
I'd be interested in seeing this design applied to other smaller motors, like small outboards (ones smaller than 10hp, which generally only come with recoil start, which is annoying)

You can usually just replace the diaphragm to make a bad running trimmer run better. As trimmers get older, a mixture re-adjust too. If you have watched videos here, you have a chance of doing one or both successfully.
Diaphragm replacement involves finding the carburetor manufacturer and getting the right one for that model. IN GENERAL, it’s walbro, Zama or rui-x-ing

The original battery might not be available anymore, but you can get an aftermarket battery for it still for less than $50. The battery looks something like a power tool battery that was used in many devices, such as older Ni-Cad Dewalt drills.

Hi Having same trouble but the choke switch will not stay in choke or half run position it just springs back to full run. Any ideas please ? Battery lasted till it was just out of guarantee certainly wouldn't recommend this one as they stopped producing a battery to fit. I was told ' You don't need a battery its got a pull start '. Extremely poor after-sales service !!!

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you Patricia Maughan for the comment. There is a lever and catch on the opposite side of the carb where the throttle cable connects. There could be a problem there. More than likely the spring is broken. A new carb should fix that problem. Yes the electric start was just a gimmick on this trimmer. The support for it disappeared very quickly.

I'd love an electric-start one. But these days I wonder if they have fully electric, battery-powered trimmers that last just as long on a full charge as this lasts on a full tank of gasoline, and are just as strong, if not stronger, and come with an extra battery so you can do a quick swap during work just like refilling the tank.
But as for electric-start, gasoline-powered, yes, this is cool! But it's not just about the extra weight that the battery would add; the electric motor is adding to it too. So if it were just 2 pounds then I don't think that would be too much. But if it were like 6 or 8 more then yeah!
Homelite's solution in the early 2000s or so when I bought my dad one of their electric-start ones for Father's Day, was to lose the rope assembly as the trade-off. Then it still seemed decently reasonable in weight.

I think having an electric start like that on a weed trimmer would be great, but it doesn't have to be part of the unit itself. I've seen some trimmers that have a place to connect the starter at the back. BTW - on my Toro Tecumseh with electric start it's not powerful enough to start the engine so I guess it's most likely the battery even though it charges to 13 Volts? Pull start works fine.

I am here to see if I can remove the electric start. I had one of these without the start. A buddy borrowed it and it got stolen. To replace it, he got the e-start version (all someplace had at the time). I did not want it, but it was hard to complain as it cost more. Of course, the battery was under-scaled, gave up after 4-5 starts, and died young. Then the carb gummed and I bought an electric. Here we are 6-7 years later, and I am thinking of resurrecting it to run the edger attachment (the electric heat cycles quickly). I am thinking of ordering a carb/fuel line kit, but it was so freakin heavy that if I am going to work on it, I want to pull the electric start off. It appears that I can. If I cannot remove the sprague clutch, I may have to fab a guard over it. Or use the old cover.

I had a battery but the cells were destroyed. I bought another battery and after some soldering and messing about, managed to resurrect the machine to its full battery start. I use the pull cord when cold and at a flip of a switch its fires into life. It is very heavy though. Great as a cheap strimmer but pretty much useless as a hedge trimmer.

Just to let you guys know, someone one ran over my Ryobi strimmer. So i was only left with the motor section. Being an engineer and a keen modelmaker. I butchered the strimmer of everything except the engine, tank and electric start and fitted it in a 5ft long radio control model speed boat. The damm thing is so fast that other model boaters at the lake offered me £300 for the boat. In the end I sold it for £375. The model boat I made cost a total of £80 in materials plus the Ryobi engine. Since then I have bought 3 other broken Ryobi strimmers costing £20 each and sold 2 more boats for between £375 and £400. I am now busy making my 4th boat. So don't throw away that broken strimmer. You too could profit from it.

My theory with these strimmers is the nicad battery degrades over a couple of years and won't hold a decent charge over a day so needs charging on day of use. Who's going to remember to charge the battery hours before its needed?. After a few years, the battery will only start it a few times so most just give up on it and junk the battery. Also, this thing weighs 13lbs with the battery, my other 2 strimmers weigh 9 lbs, another reason to give up on it. The Touch Start is a pure novelty ( the reason I have 2!)

Cool in theory, not in practice. Weight is your enemy. Pumping iron is for after hours at the gym.
If you understand the choke function, and your weedy is not cooperating in a couple/three tugs on the rope when cold, or one half-hearted yank when warm, rebuild the carby.
Carb metering diaphragms get stiff with today's pump gas. TH-cam the procedure. It's easy. Lean how to change them.

I'd just stick with the pull start line trimmers due to them being lighter,it was the same deal when I repaired power tools & Ryobi lawn equipment as an apprentice.
Ryobi used to have an electric line trimmer which ran off a lead acid battery, it was bulky, heavy & not worth repairing once the battery died in it - just throw it in the garbage bin !

Nope! The first tool that wears out is you! Luging that extra weight around will take much more of a toll than pulling a rope to start. My Craftsman has the socket on the back for the adapter that attaches to your drill. You don’t have to lug the drill around! Much better.

This is a bad design, petrol string trimmers are heavy enough, without having too carry around a battery and an electric motor just to start it at the beginning of the job and never used again. My Honda powered trimmer never needs more than a gentle pull to start it.

The supplied nicd battery will only last 5 years or so, it consists of 10 sub C cells connected in series. If you still have the battery case then you can replace the nicd cells with 10 nimh cells connected in series. It requires a little bit of soldering but it extends the useful life of the tool. The extra weight is worth it, the Ryobi shoulder strap minimises the bodily strain imposed by the battery and the starter. I've converted my battery pack to one using li ion cells (3 in series giving an output of 12.6V).
