  • Matt's double header........ha ha. Hope you like Sea Caves, because this is it!!! Last trip of the outing, and it was superb. Headed east from Porthgain, back towards Abercastle, almost to the extremity of the last trip - Ynys Deullyn. The wind was still there, not as cold, and not as bad though, and later it died off completely. Porthgain is a lovely, historic little harbour, that wouldn't be out of place on the North Cornish coast, and as I've previously stated, the similarities are remarkable. The main similarity being - They are both superb Sea Kayaking venues. This trip is absolutely wonderful, if like us you love the caves, and tunnels, and cut throughs, the level of interest never lets up, in fact, just like the last trip, we didn't actually travel very far, but had enough interesting features for a trip 4 times as long. I have done this trip before, from Abercastle, and the same trip as this. Last time, I missed quite a few of the caves, and tunnels, as there is just so much to see. If you go the other way from Porthgain (West) you reach Abereiddy, and that is also a great trip, in fact, you would be hard pressed to do a boring trip down here, given good weather.

Skomer, it was gusting that much this morning, it make that whistling sound, as it penetrates door, and window seals. At least it's warmed up though. You are blessed to have this on your doorstep, every visit I make here, it seems to get better. I always remember it being excellent, but when I do it again, it's even more excellent. 2 fellas, turned up at Abercastle, and were trying to intimidate us to pay for the launch there. All this charging is getting ridiculous. We ALL pay Council Tax.

Thanks mate, but I think it's the fact that the sun is still quite low in the sky, and gives that lovely quality, when it lights up a scene from an acute angle..............something like that.

Great video, yep same here Frank i love the rock hopping caves and seeing if you can get between the rocks without getting your arse wedged in.
i live in Haverfordwest so blessed to have this on my doorstep. looking forward to doing this but looking out of the window gale force winds and lashing down
Its always a pleasent suprise when theres no parking meter when i go on holiday i usually got 20 to 30 pounds of coins to feed the buggers.

Hi Ian, believe me mate, when you're at the mouth of one of those caves, you cannot help yourself but go in. Sometimes a seal surfaces behind you and snorts like a horse, or there's a seal hidden in the dark and it wails like a haunted soul, now THAT is spooky. Check out my Seal encounters video, there is a good example or two there. The tides are nowhere near as Avonmouth (48ft range) probably about 20ft range, but just south of here, they really rip through "The Bitches" check it out yourself.

How do Bob, glad you like 'em, can't beat a bit of adventure can you? And when you analyse it, that's what it is really. A break from the daily routine, and a leap into the unknown, albeit, in a controlled manner. I had paddled this area before, so knew mostly what to expect, other times, we're in places we've never been, and it's all a novelty. My boat is a Rockpool Alaw, fibreglass, Matt's is a PH Delphin, plastic.Plastic is better to start with, cheaper, and robust, but it's all very personal

Ah yes........... the double-ender was the consolation prize, ha ha. It was a minor epic, and in my mind, I had the second paddle as the best of the trip, but I'm now thinking this one was. That narrow cave has got to be the narrowest, sea kayak, navigable cave, in the WORLD? Should have used the double-ender on the customer today, I think. It would look quite good orange, and blood red.

A lot love Kayaking in the surf, and a lot love Tide races, and all that excitement, but for me, this type of trip is the ultimate, negotiating openings, and caves, and finding an isolated beach, to do some beach combing, and finding a discarded sex-toy, ha ha. Thanks Jorvik, compliment appreciated.

Anybody gives Matt any cheek now, and the double header comes out. He tucks it down his pants ha ha, some of the young ladies eyes pop out.

We let the side down though Alan, only 2 cups of tea, and Matt left half of his, ha ha. He had a right bag on, 'cos the Café owner wanted £2 for wi fi..........ha ha. It was an awesome little paddle, and we only covered about 7 miles in total, so much to see, and the rock hopping was excellent. I've been rock bottom financially, never been this bad for 20 yrs, I ALWAYS cop for it when the Tories get in, no wonder they're extinct in Scotland.

That wind wasn't warm either, the day before, I had to cover my teeth with my lips, paddling into it, as it was painful............This has been one of the longest drawn out winters hasn't it? Not the coldest, but maybe the coldest over a long time. Anyway, I think we've turned the corner now, and camping weather is approaching, just need the wind to feck off, for 6 months, and a take the clouds with it...........easy eh?

Absolutely stunning scenery. Thanks for the great video. I'm not sure i would have had the nerve to navigate some of those caves. I have one question about the tides, at Porthgain you are just around the corner from the Bristol Channel where they have the second highest tides in the world. Are they as high at Porthgain and what tide were you paddling in. I'm not from the UK so I'm not that familiar with the conditions there.
