- This short documentary tells the story of the new floating bridge across Lake Washington in Seattle, Washington. The bridge was a project of the SR 520 Bridge Replacement and HOV Program and opened to traffic in April 2016.
This bridge saves me so much time when I have projects in Seattle!
My father worked on the pontoons for the original 520 bridge from 1961 to 1963. It was sort of a family pride thing to have that memory. I only wish that I had thought to contact WSDOT to inquire about having been able to retrieve a fragment from the demolition of the old bridge. Perhaps not as historically significant as a piece of the Berlin Wall, but for Seattleites of a certain era, it would be a very interesting keepsake.
Dean, contact Steve Peer with our 520 project office at 425-301-2023 or PeerSte@wsdot.wa.gov. He may be able to hook you up with something.
When this was first planned there was no intention to have pushbikes or pedestrians. Thankfully that has been rectified. To get to the University district from my son's place this saves some 30 + km each way. I am looking forward to a much better access to the whole of the Seattle area.
Just amazing
It's amazing to me that bridges have lifespans shorter than most humans (although it appears, in practice, we keep them around a bit longer).
Will keep looking to find a story on the bridge that sank during the construction.
And then it became a toll bridge🙄
Too bad it costs $15 to cross it. The only people who use it are wealthy techies.
