I agree 100% with you on short-form media, it's a cancer of the mind. I don't have TikTok or Instagram, but I use TH-cam for the medium to long-form content and I dislike that it includes Shorts. After realizing they were an absolute SINK of my time, attention, and ultimately of my life, I removed them from my browser's TH-cam using an extension. I can't do the same on my phone, but since I'm a coder, I wrote a script to go through my TH-cam history page and remove every single instance where I watched a short. Now on the surface it looks like my account never watched a single short, so I don't get recommended them as aggressively. Whenever they pop up, I ignore them or click on the X "don't recommend shorts for 30 days" or whatever UI bullsh*t option they make available. Avoid short form media, people.
short form media is desiged to waste your time. I too avoid it. Once you get hooked, you just watch another one and another one and you don´t even notice how time passes. That can happen with other things too but short form content usually provides no value, nothing you will remember.
I reccomend using the app stayfree, it an app that monitors your time usage and you can set limits on how much time you use phone and will block out the app after ( you can use pin to turn this off or adapt usage based on what your goals are) but they have an option in their setting to block all shorts. It helps me so much :)
Unless you use an iPhone (there are options still out there), you can use other TH-cam frontends like NewPipe, LibreTube, etc. to not only block ads, but also avoid training their insane algorithm.
While I haven't gotten rid of TH-cam Shorts from my view, I've built the self-regulation and control to prevent it from wasting too much of my time, if any had my interest in the first place.

Short form content ruining memory rings pretty true. Back in my college days my psychology 101 professor tasked us to target studying for 30 minutes with no single mental distraction that fully removes your attention. Very difficult. He said if you started out at 3 or 4 minutes, that's really damn good. Most couldn't get past 2. Get it to 30 and you can achieve any goal you want. When a streamer, someone who actually makes a part of their living from media says he thinks that shorts are unhealthy, one probably should listen. Thanks for your honesty and perspective C-Milk!
Here's the thing about short term media. They (I don't know who they are, honestly) found that people have now got a shorter attention span, on one subject. So, they found that if people made video's that were only a few minutes, people would watch, but ironically were left wanting more. It's a new phenomenon that sites like TH-cam have created. Since each video is only a few minutes long, and it doesn't satisfy your need to watch stupid shit, then you start watching more and more to get that video "high". Hence, you spend more time on it. They then get even more money in add revenue. Think of it this way. When you watch a video that is 50 minutes long, you see what, round 3 or 4 adds. So, with the short form, you watch 2 adds in say, 5 minutes. That works out to the equivalent of 2 times 10 adds in the same amount of time compared to 4 adds in that time. That's 20 adds compared to 4 adds.
Doesn't apply to everyone. I gave a couple hours to Insta, never installed tiktok, got bored, rarely visiting it today. I prefer proper stuff, documentaries, dog groomings, some comedy and filter out hyperbolic titles and most AI thumbnails. Too much fakery out there. Not worth of my time. And I have no time for ads either. Skipping even sponsoring.
The Concrete Confessional blog guy has some insane stories about being an educational consultant for the children of China's elite politicians / businesspeople/ celebrities. The first part is called "I Was Simon Song," I think, and Vice did a feature on it. It's def worth checking out. He was in Shenzhen during the COVID lockdowns, the A4 protests, and the pro-democracy riots in Hong Kong, as well.
I’ve been watching content about China. In 2009 I almost moved there but my son was born and so I stayed state side. You and Winston have been the only TH-camrs I still watch. I always wonder how my life would be if I moved but ultimately I’m happy I didn’t go.
I quit Reddit when you uploaded that last video asking for screen time. I had about 1-2 hours a day and now it’s basically nothing. I’ve felt much better and can sleep much better.
was it called "Nosedive"? The one about that woman who couldn't get on a flight, threw a fit at the airport, got down rated, started driving to her destination, wasn't allowed in because she had a low score, had a meltdown, then got taken away to a prison forever because her score crossed 0?
Wow, you’re right. I’m done with short form videos. I knew it was a problem and that I needed to reduce screen time but this is the tipping point for me. No more.
He is not joking when he says he remembers things more when he stopped using short-form media. Months ago it was hard to remember brief thought, but now it's much more easy.
I keep considering TH-cam being an authoritarian government simulator. The same with getting invested in any online game, where the company running the game would suddenly have just about total control over your life. It's why I'm detaching myself from all that shit, but TH-cam is a really hard addiction to break.
🤣😂🤣😂 Great analogy. I don't mind YT, because most of what I watch is all informative, historic, or scientific...but....you still don't want to be watching hours of "TV" per day anyway.
I swear TikTok in America gives extra credit to people who are extra weird or extra good looking? It seems like those are the people who blow up on TikTok. At least that's what I see from watching content covering TikToks. I never gotten the app
Re memory: when you stop bombarding your brain with stuff, the brain will come out again... like with the toys: the creativity in kids develops when having minimum toys and no screen time. They willl find out how a stick can be a horse to ride and make a train from boxes and shoe laces (if you don't disadvantage their dexterity skills with velcro) .
Can’t wait for you to follow up the short video dilemma, it’s ironic that is contributing to TH-cam’s downfall trying to follow TikTok while sites like Spotify are embracing podcasts and are succeeding because of it. And instead of reflecting this, TH-cam is now starting to think they can branch out to become the new msm news site 🤦♀️
Nice to finally see a deeper dive into the Chinese Social Credit System. If you want to go a step further, maybe a video about how it is influencing changes in US government and business in the last decade, though you still need to dive deeper into the Chinese system, since they've been trying to build the system since the 1980's.
Life is quite tough in China. Can't protest or criticize the Government. If you do, you might end up in jail or some reeducation camp. You can also end up with negative social credit scores.
I have never had any social media and barely spend time on trends. I am always astonished that people can scroll shorts or tik tok or any of these type of videos. It is mind numbing. I hate it even more when someone tells me I have to watch something because they always want to show me some stupid video that piqued their interest but that I have zero interest in. I tend to love reading or understanding tech, science, math, etc. I think social media is destructive. I actually think the internet is too. There are constructive uses, but most people are just using it to feed dopamine and their attention issues. I think the internet has hurt society more than helped and it was planned by the companies of course. Oh well, I am just a tiny tiny spec in the world. Each second that Facebook has, they can influence millions with whatever they want. I can help show my Sister a piece of propaganda, find all the receipts and evidence, but in that time, Facebook has brainwashed another billion. lol
Fact's that's what happens when people let social media get too them .they get so obsessed with the media ofc we have the big tech companies that spread misinformation and other things that ruins social media. China is up there as a country that think they can control everything that's not how it works. Eventually people is going to get angry and start protesting
short term media, reels, tiktok, shorts, facebook posts... they are cancer Its ok to watch 2 hour long movie that won't ruin you like 5mins scrolling, I avoided using facebook for years but i am forced to use it for work and I can see how my time is being wasted, its like you can't control it best to avoid it from the start
1) 4 hours a day is an education certificate in a new career or hobby. You can learn a new language, job ready skill or learn to knit, sew, garden or cook. Wow. 2) Short form can be really fun- but it is literally designed to be like potato chips- pure snacks without any lasting value.
I think you and Winston are doing a fantastic job of educating people. But can you find a sponsor with less dodgy products that might be addictive or harmful? Thanks.
I do agree, but that product isn't actually addictive like you might think. These things came out years ago, by a different company. It only last a short time because they aren't that good. I'm a cigarette smoker, and I tried them many years ago. I got nothing out of them. All they give you is taste. They might have nicotine in them, but it doesn't go to your lungs. They suck, big time. (forgive the pun). The reason people smoke is to get the nicotine. This is the thing people are addicted to. No one is going to give up their cigarettes or vape for them. It's just a waste of money.
The fum ads kinda piss me off too. i quit after 22 years of smoking cigs, and the *only* way i was able to was by vaping. At first i smoked and vaped, but after a couple weeks i couldnt put up with the taste of cigs anymore so i pitched them for good. The difference in addiction between the two is huge to me, i know i can stop vaping with little to no withdrawal effects, at least compared to cigs. I had to smoke every 2 hours, no matter what, or even more than that. With vaping, its more of an afterthought. Im never stopping everything im doing to go and hit my vape, but when i smoked i was outside every 2 hours like clockwork. And if i couldnt get out to smoke i was not a pleasant person. I dont get that with vaping, at all. The fum ads are BS to me because vaping got subverted by tobacco companies and demonized. In many peoples minds vaping is even worse than smokimg, which is complete and utter bs. It can be bad or worse for some people, bit the frequency is incredibly low. Especially compared to cigs. Creators pretend fum is some perfectly healthy and very functional cessation device when its not. If they were more honest and just said i got paid to say this i would be cool. But they act like theyre trying to help, and that they actually care about you. Its gross

Many of the terms are simply weasel words - that is, they can use them in any context and interpret both the word and the context any way if it suits them at the time. if challenged, then you misunderstood the context. Words are given extremely broad meanings as a specific one has limits applied. The vaguer it is, the broader the potential usage of the term. For example, "social order" does not need to have anything to do with social order in any meaningful way. It means whatever they want it to mean the time. Again, as contexts change, they say the issue (whatever it is) is now covered by the term. Same as "weird" or any other term that is coined today.

Excellent reporting 👍
Love the idea of FUM, will definitely try it. First sponsor I really feel a connection with.
Hope you didn’t do some research no good don’t know why this guy who has said he was a smoker hasn’t…
Thank you for sharing this.
I’ve been watching content about China. In 2009 I almost moved there but my son was born and so I stayed state side. You and Winston have been the only TH-camrs I still watch. I always wonder how my life would be if I moved but ultimately I’m happy I didn’t go.
Matt is almost to 1, million guys we gotta make sure we’re subscribing and sharing the videos for friends and family to see
Damn I remember him saying he was almost at a mil a year ago and asking people from the stream to go sub LOL
Stuck at 971k going on 3 weeks now. Gotta get it back into gear to hit ‘Gold Play’ my 3Q24 projection.
Great video. Wondering if you finished my book? Last chapter correlates well to this video.
I quit Reddit when you uploaded that last video asking for screen time. I had about 1-2 hours a day and now it’s basically nothing. I’ve felt much better and can sleep much better.
Yeah bro, I wonder what people expected. I stopped using Facebook when I realized it was the future. What an ugly future. “Progress” my ass.
And everybody clapped...
I've never tried tik toc, or wanted to in the past but the urge to score zero in a system designed to program the population is a bit overwhelming.
Quality is better then quantity. I've always enjoyed your videos.
I've seen this movie before, it was an episode on Black Mirror. I highly recommend you all watch it. Apparently, in Chine life truly imitates art.
was it called "Nosedive"? The one about that woman who couldn't get on a flight, threw a fit at the airport, got down rated, started driving to her destination, wasn't allowed in because she had a low score, had a meltdown, then got taken away to a prison forever because her score crossed 0?
Wow, you’re right. I’m done with short form videos. I knew it was a problem and that I needed to reduce screen time but this is the tipping point for me. No more.
The China Show + Serpentza + Laowhy86... what more do I need?
Oh, yeah... the Monday show....
Add China uncensored, with Chris Chapel.
China Observer and Free China too.@@kurtwinslow2670
I donnu what more do u need, but I'm 100% sure what u don't need are going to china and watch tourist video
He is not joking when he says he remembers things more when he stopped using short-form media. Months ago it was hard to remember brief thought, but now it's much more easy.
Well i'm not hot, so i'm ok.
Unfortunately i'm weird though.
Yeah it's pretty much one or the other.
Love ya❤
Please do a video about the cat abuser groups in China. China need to make a law to protect animals and jail the abusers!!
I don't mind YT, because most of what I watch is all informative, historic, or scientific...but....you still don't want to be watching hours of "TV" per day anyway.
i think as long as you’re smart with the use of your time on youtube you should be alright
13:04 you are right about short form media. Then I start on the 1.5 hour documentaries.
Matt and Winston rule!!!
Good work! Keep it up!
I agree. Good warning!
Watching your videos 8 hours per day. 😇
Hey! I'm on the video too!
Thank you….it was a real eye opener.
I swear TikTok in America gives extra credit to people who are extra weird or extra good looking? It seems like those are the people who blow up on TikTok. At least that's what I see from watching content covering TikToks. I never gotten the app
Great job!!
I wish I could help you reach a million. Alas, I am already subscribed. Another good video.
damn Laowai, havent watched your vids in a few years - you have changed loads. Be careful man
Re memory: when you stop bombarding your brain with stuff, the brain will come out again... like with the toys: the creativity in kids develops when having minimum toys and no screen time. They willl find out how a stick can be a horse to ride and make a train from boxes and shoe laces (if you don't disadvantage their dexterity skills with velcro) .
Isnt the social credit system just a pilot program in some cities?
When you think it can’t get crazier…
Eventually people is going to get angry and start protesting
short term media, reels, tiktok, shorts, facebook posts... they are cancer
Its ok to watch 2 hour long movie that won't ruin you like 5mins scrolling, I avoided using facebook for years but i am forced to use it for work and I can see how my time is being wasted, its like you can't control it best to avoid it from the start
Glad to see they are as crazy as we are. Makes me feel kind of normal.
We are crazy
The CCP is diabolical
Thank you for setting the record straight
When are we going to see a serpentzA vs. laowhy86 split screen PK face off? C'mon boys.
1) 4 hours a day is an education certificate in a new career or hobby. You can learn a new language, job ready skill or learn to knit, sew, garden or cook. Wow. 2) Short form can be really fun- but it is literally designed to be like potato chips- pure snacks without any lasting value.
God dang those are some serious filters. They should promote that instead of their "AI, 5G expertise"
Thank you
I think you and Winston are doing a fantastic job of educating people.
Its gross
9:24 how can I find the original video here? Search terms don't seem to bring anything up.
Can u do another livestream about the UK piano incident?
Yes please do a video about this!
@@1979ikimus I heard some update on this incident ! I follow it all along!
Joe did one
There are so many videos already on it. Go watch the China show from yesterday.

A relative worked with a nurse who thought aubergine/eggplant was just a phallic like image.
She didn’t know it was a vegetable! How scary is that, a nurse in the UK can’t identify common vegetables. My relative thought she was joking, she wasn’t
Why would somebody from the UK know what all the tropical vegetables are? Y'know, the entire world isn't lardass land, where everything can be cheaply imported from Mexico or Californa.
The price of fum is a absolute joke.

You are absolutely right I deleted all my social media except for TH-cam. Deleting TH-cam is so hard for me because I love watching your videos and music. But I feel much better about my self after deleting them.
Don't touch her. Lol

Thanks 🙏 😊Good luck hitting ONE MILLION SUBSCRIBERS 😅🎉

Laowhy you gonna have to do something massive to get that last 30k to 1 mil subs 😮 promise to get a tat of your choice and you will get there! 👍🏻
Thanks for this vid, people really need to watch this very closely.
on the topic of short term media causing issues I whole heartedly agree. I have been lucky enough to not go down most of the short term media sites but I have gotten stuck in youtube shorts rabbit-holes, and when I do I can feel my attention span shrinking, and become more moody. does not feel good once you actually become aware of it
How to block the show function on my iPhone in the browser because I’ve already deleted the app because how inclusive the shows into the TH-cam browsing
I have never had any social media other than Twitter which I don't use much and I don't watch any shorts on youtube. My time online is some shopping, paying bills and mostly consuming news or long form youtube videos that I can typically learn from in some way. I have never understood the social media obsession and feel like from my outside perspective that I have watched it destroy society. I'm so grateful that I got to live my childhood and up through high school just before the internet era really took off.
6:50 how do i get that one
That's a good point. The days are not going faster.. we are just always on our phones so we lose track of time.

Hey Milk. Great !
