Not more than 60 years ago, there were still fishermen in Switzerland on the Doubs (chalk stream, not a small creek) using the long rods with the horsehair line, no reel. In the evening they took big fish quite nearby. The french "fouetter" (casting) and pêche au fouet (flyfishing)remembers this old technique. In Soubey, where I often fish, one person still has such a rod.
I've been a huge fan of fly fishing but hate bringing all the gear. I'm putting that down and I'm switching to tenkara this year. I love the minimalist approach.
@ragusa60 In Serbia and surrounding countryes (Bosnia, Montenegro, Croatia...) there are still some old guys (70-80 years) that use hazel tree branch for rod, and horsehair as line. One of that guys was on EFFA meeting on river Ribnik in Bosnia 2-3 years ago. That was probably usual way of fly fishing all around Europe for centuryes.
Daniel your videos are great. Thank you for sharing them with us all. Some day I will be able to go on tenkara adventures, by the time I get a rod I will have a surplus of tenkara flies thankfully.
Damn...I just found a tenkara rod at Walmart and it was only $10.00. Length was 14 feet, very flexible and has the distinguishing grip. It does not telescope down to that short length.
Loved the idea of Tenkara, even got a rod for Christmas. I've been out three times and still can't get a fish on it. I like the concept just need to get some fish. I tied up some Tenkara style flies and going to give them a chance. Hopefully it will pick up in the spring. I love the feel of the rod. Any suggestions?
Why are the tenkara rods so espensive? I want to get into fly fishing but I don't have alot of places to fly fish but we do make trips to places I could fish often. I don't want to spend alot of money since I wont fly fish alot but I still want a Tenkara. Thanks
would maxima ultragreen be good for level line and as a tippet? I was thinking of using 15 lb ultragreen for level line, and something lighter maybe 6 to 8 lb ultragreen for tippet, possibly 4lb . Would ultra green be ok for tippet using the small flies? I figured it should be alright since most of the line will be held out of the water any.. appreciate the help.
how big are the biggest fish you can target on tenkara rods? and does tenkara work in lakes? most of the fish i catch are about 10-14" but i also fish in areas atleast once a month where the trout average about 15-20".
Daniel, I was wondering if you could, since you are probably the most knowledgeable person in the U.S.A about tenkara, could you tell me what kebari means? I see that word a lot when searching tenkara patterns but I do not know the actual definition.
You state in this video..."it's not the gear". I strongly agree. I haven't been to your website but I expect that your tenkara poles are quite expensive. If it's not the gear then why not sell something cheaper?
David McCarty Not having complete control is part of the fun lol. I use my Tenkara rod constantly now...so much fun. You should give it a try if you haven't already.
let me save you people some money. walk to a stream then find yourself a long strong tree branch. then proceed to tie 20 to 30 feet of line on it. then throw it in the damn stream repeatedly with a fly on it. been doing it since I was a kid and we always had fish at camp. apparently I have been japanese zen fishing since I was maybe 7 years old lol
born68 + I have done that with a buddy's line after he snapped the tip of his ITO and caught 3 brookies for the pan. That being said, it's a fraction of the cost to buy a tenkara rod over a western rod and its way more sensitive than a tree branch. 👍🏻 Tenkara is worth it!!

For float for your flies a good thing to use that is all natural is Skidmore’s water proofing. It’s a bees wax product and it works great.

As a fly angler with 25+ years experience, I love the idea of Tenkara. But it seems to me the drawback is not having line control to set the hook.
